I log into the game on a 10 day trial. I haven't logged into the game in around 2 years. My character is level 85, I join a group with LFG as a tank. We complete it with ZERO problems or deaths, and at the end 2 people in the party start cursing away at one of the dps for being "bad". I reply "why so much hate?" and I get cursed at and told to "go die".
It seriously boggles my mind, how people/kids these days can be so nasty and ruthless to one another. This was the main reason I quit the game back then, the community. I came back to give the game a try and the one thing that drove me away, I experience it within 30 minutes of being logged in.
It's really amazing how nasty some of the community in this game is. Truly some of the worst human interactions I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing have come from this games community.
The thing is I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't kids.

When I first get into a new MMO, there's a few things I look for in the options. First... can I make my mini-map spin? Second, where do I turn off every chat channel that shows players talking that aren't near me in the virtual space?
I don't think the interactions you're seeing is exclusive to WoW. It's just that there's more people there. Tera is pretty bad from what I've seen. Maybe others. Nothing a strong company-paid community admin couldn't clean up. But I guess paying people to discipline paying customers doesn't turn too much profit these days.
I feel your pain OP. Best to find a way to not have to deal with it, in whatever way suits you best.
I had a sad but now funny thing happen on WoW I had a healer that refused to dispel and we kept wiping from static cling on Asaad in Vortex Pentacle. I told him that he's a bad healer for refusing to do that. He started to insult me with all kinds of insults. I said something like everything you say may be true about me but that doesn't make you a good healer. It was a cross realm group. He then made level 1 chars on my server stated to say he knew were I lived was going to come kill me and stuff like that. So I screen shot everything I could sent it to blizzard. Told them that I felt unsafe because people shouldn't be talking like that in a game. About an hour later I was talking to am GM that told me they take stuff like this very serious even to the point turning it over to police and FBI. About a week later they told me that they banned the player and turned everything over to the authorities. I never heard from that player again. I have no idea what happened. I never really though he find me but that is way over the top and I though Blizzard acted appropriately. I seen my fair share of e-peen in the game other then that but I just ignore and move on. And as a side note I think its funny when you threaten people like that you don't even know who they are. I worked as private security for a few years and am not a small guy its not often people threaten me when they know me. You never know who's at the other end I'm sure law enforcement people play these games too and you could get yourself into real trouble.
Originally posted by Sho0terMcgavin I find that most online interactions are just indications of how people really are. They might put on a mask in real life, but you will never see their true self in till they have no consequences. The truth is, this is not unique to WoW. I have yet to play a single online game where you don't have these type of people. Best bet is to just /ignore and move on. Don't let them ruin your game time.
I agree, a person who can be an ass online but not in real life is not just an ass, he is also a coward... there are a lot off ass/cowards in the world apparently.
theyr feelin safe bhind th keyboards "anonymous" so they can b abusive as heck to players tht doesnt play theyr character type (be it dps/tank whatever) theyr style.
best answer i think is 2 ignore em theyre trolls n might go away if ignored they usually cant stand tht
my reply is "if yu say so" n play my style anyway usually drives em nuts:)
I run into this stuff every now and again OP and I agree with the majority here. Just /ignore and move on. I have dropped from so many groups in WoW due to this. I used to try and reason with them, but realized that if people take a game that seriously that they need umpteen mods to prove they have some how accomplished something in a video game, then it is most likely pointless pointing out how immature their behavior and expectations are. It boggles me that these people still use LFG, you would think if they were so leet they would run with their guild of leet players...
Cheers!

Small niche game that will never get droves of little kids in it. mostly because its way way to hard for them and the first night the spiders, hell hounds, and wolfs will take care of all the little B*tch @ss noobs/kids that decide to try it out lol
I'm looking forward to ESO as well, but I guarantee the community will not be any better in that game.

In general, people in their teens are fine. People in their 30s and above are usually fine. Its the people in their 20s that are largely responsible for the dickishness.

I wouldn't be able to give any hard numbers to be honest. I've also never had anyone be extremely bad towards me, I observe it happen to others every now and then. Of all the times I've seen it happen, talking about the extremely bad ones, it's always been an adult. I don't see how people can act like that and not be embarrassed, that's what gets me.

Anonymity is the answer to all of your questions. Some person is very angry with something in their lives (their looks, fitness, wife cheating, kid dying, being fired etc...) and takes that aggression out on people in video games, a thing they wouldn't normally do, but with anonymity no one knows who they are.
There's other things to it too, but hands down this is one of the major players. No fear, no consequences. Why NOT treat people like garbage?
Sadly, it's not just limited to WoW. It's just a result of people being able to hide behind the anonymity of a keyboard with no real consequence for their poor behavior.
"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth."
The assholes of the internet are by in large assholes in real life, they just don't act like that in real life because they know if they did someone would beat the shit out of them.
I love this thread and it shows the reason why people suck and elitism is very much really, this is why PK is needed in MMO's, it brings balance whether the carebears want to admit it or not, the only other solution is making MMO's more solo oriented, which just look at the market "is happening" which overall isn't good.
Deal with PKers or deal with this mental abuse your choice, but PVP and PK is needed to bring balance. You better believe though the best of the best proper PKers would target this type of mental abusing people "specifically".
The interesting thing is, people that treat people this way usually suck as players so they can't really PK and therefore get owned, which brings balance.
DDO seems to avoid the majority of the loud, rude player base somehow. There was a brief episode of their being in game when it first went to the f2p/sub hybrid system. But, the /squelch feature covering voice chat as well as typed led to them losing their audience rather quickly.

it's "safe" because they are sitting behind a computer in their bedroom at a 1000 miles away.
We had a rare case in EVE where 2 of those ppl actually met at Fanfest, and it was a awesome sight seeing the scrawny emo corp leader outmatched by a cool 200 pounds.

Except these people would be the ones doing the corpse camping and making life hell for people trying to enjoy the game. You dont need to be good to ruin people's days, so why give people even more tools?
And its quite hypocritical to call out elitists and assholes yet use carebear. That term has its roots in elitism and assholishness.
It really is amazing that people are so hateful egotistical and puffed up with pride playing a game that is so dumbed down a chimpanzee could be taught to play it. There is no diversity, intuition or skilled required. Playing a character is very simplistic for the most part. Follow the cookie cutter road...... Most the people that make a big deal about peoples rank on the dps meter are generally douche bags in and out of game. Games that don't have these sort of add-ons fare better because people that have to put down on others to feel good about themselves will avoid them for simple fact it's not easy for them to point out how elite they are. They only enjoy a game where they can destroy someone else in order to make them feel superior.
It really is a shame aside from being ridiculously dumbed down WoW is a very rich game world to play in lots of in depth history and lore and exploration. Blizzard makes a pretty good game it's the asinine elitist mentality of the players that ruin it. Which is so ironic considering the simplicity of the game.
In Vanilla even the most antisocial dudes had to behave, more or less also in BC, or they were done on their servers in no time. With the anonymity of the LFG and LFR tools, server/faction/race transfers and stuff they have got all the opportunities they need to just be what they are - annoying little brats. Complain to Big Blizz about it, they have really gone to extremes to cater for these dudes and destroy a once haflway (only halfway!) decent community. Imho the biggest fail of far too many since they sold their soul to Activsion.
any game you play with a dungeon finder you will see this. it's the same as MOBA's; queue up, get put in party with random strangers, never see them again.

It's because of IFT. The theory breaks down "Generation Me" all too well. A normal person provided with anonymity and an audience may undergo a negative personality change. The younger the person the drastic and faster the personality change towards the negative.
Usually people complain about community that are f2p games with this type of thing with language and disrespect. It seems that this attitude happens in both f2p and subscription. Its kinda funny really to think about when people try to defend subscription models. It also seems the quality of game is depended on community of the game as well. If you are constantly getting harassment by "children", which is probably just adult children who just wont grow up, really nothing you can do about it but report or ignore them with the first sign of childish behavior.

At least on Faeblight the community was a mess long before f2p. Once they merged the faction chats things got ugly fast.

WoW has a terrible terrible terrible community.
I got reminded to it recently.
When I got back tot he game after a year or so I actually enjoyed the game until I started doing things with other people.
Can't believe they have made that much bad changes to please that kind of audience.
