Villagers and Heroes is a game with a twist: It is largely based on crafting and free-form game play. We took a look at Villagers & Heroes and have a great preview to offer. Read on before heading to the comments.
While the browser-based beginnings and brightly colored art style might lend a certain likeness to that other game, the similarities mostly stop there. You can play Villagers and Heroes with full-on WASD controls, with your right mouse button spinning the character and camera, your hotbar displaying skills with cooldowns. Additionally, you can pick up lots of different quests to play out and most importantly – you can craft to your heart’s content. The strongest facet of Villagers and Heroes isn’t the fact that all of these features exist, but rather how simplistically they are implemented into a seamless world.

Nice to see games still being made with the Torque Game Engine (though it might be TGEA... which is basically TGE with shaders and some improvements). They've definitely done some work to it. Despite the limited/aged tech, they've found a very creative way to work within those limits, and actually use them to their advantage, making them part of the game's look. I find that far more satisfying than just throwing normal maps, bloom and godrays at everything. Hats off to the designers for that!
I've played a bit. Haven't gotten very far, yet, but it seems pretty solid so far.
Well, after reading this article, I decided to download the game and have a go for myself. Pleasantly surprised so far. Hard to say what it is about the game, but it just feels fun (so far, and bear in mind I'm only lv 3). Also tried Eldevin after recommendations in another thread, but didn't take to that one quite so easily.
My advice, give it a try. It'll either grab you or not, and what is there to lose?
A big positive for me was that when I spoke to another player, they actually answered! And politely! And then after a short conversation friended me! Goodness, it seems like years since that's happened for me in an mmo.
