Best fishing mini game/profession

thunderclesthundercles Member UncommonPosts: 510

Hey folks!

I know there's been posts like this in the past but there's always new stuff coming out and I'd love to hear what games have the best fishing element?

LOTRO, WOW, FFIV, ... who's got the best?

I used to fish a lot in Rift. I like it better than LOTRO's system. It has both shallow and deep water fishing. I got a nice epic 2H sword once, not sure if that's possible in other games(?). You can also use fish in cooking recipes, make your own lures and trade rare fish for reputation.

World of Warcraft, favorite "touch the bobber to win" fishing ever.

In all Serious, I never really did fish much in games because most don't have a good system besides the regular sit and wait leveling system of fishing like Runescape, WoW, Generic mmorpg's, and such. There are certain games out there that try to mix it up a bit but i'm not in generally in favor with it.

EQOA ... don't laugh. It was actually a fun and challenging mini game that rewarded you for accurate casting and such.

In UO, fishing is a skill just as much as using a sword or a bow, and you could find stuff like treasure maps which were awesome, I wish a game someday will replicate the treasure map system. In UO, you could also have your own boat to fish with, and not just a raft, a real boat.

My favorite would be UO, because it was a whole part of the game, not just a mini-game.

UO's was my favorite. Shore fishing, deep sea fishing, sunken treasure hunting all had multiple uses and multiple rewards. I really enjoyed going out with a couple guildies and spending a couple hours chasing SOS bottles or casting special nets.

Yep, Rift's fishing has better mechanics indeed, but LotRO's one has nice tie-ins to the game as well (outside the mechanics itself I mean). Titles, outfits, festival events, these kinda stuff.

The fish cooking and the trophies are in lotRO as well, so that's not a Rift-only :) But I agree, LotRO's fishing is pretty bland, and sadly that's the only hobby you can use...

Though it's still better than Neverwinter :)

Yeah, I'm just going to necro-rez this thread rather than start a new one and hope it has better luck this time.

I'm in the mood for a bit of fishing. I liked WoW's because it was relaxing and that's what I like about fishing sometimes. Rift has some nice spots, too.

Vanguard was pretty fun and I did like how it worked, but didn't get to do too much of it.

I think ESO has potential, but I haven't any reason to fish because in addition to relaxing, I want to be able to sell it, or cook what I catch or use it for alchemy. I hope ESO comes out with some uses for fish soon.

I've gotta go with the new guy and say Archeage.

It gets really detailed and yet at it's heart it's easy to just go off and throw in some bait and enjoy the peace.

It's very rewarding in AA, but I don't really fish for the reward.

FFXIV's fishing system is very in depth and is definitely designed for the enthusiast.  Like the other classes in the game, fishing is its own class and levels up just like a battle class in that you gain various abilities as you level up.  You have to appropriately gear your fisher, (which involves some materia melding) especially at max level to catch the higher level fish.

The actual mechanics behind catching fish is as simple as casting the line and waiting for something to bite and a pass/fail check will be based on your stats whether you catch it or not, but its complexity is built around some of the following criteria:

    - "Mooching" is an ability that allows you to catch larger fish by recasting the fish you just caught as live bait.  There are some fish that require double or even a triple mooch.

    - There are different environments to catch fish from.  There is fresh and salt water, but there is also dunefishing (fishing in sand in deep crevasses in the desert) and sky fishing. (uses special bait that floats in the "Sea of Clouds")

    - Weather also has an effect on fishing.  Some fish can only be caught during certain weather patterns, and they also just recently added fish that can only be caught after sequential weather patterns appear.  (Sunny > Rain for example)

    - There are different bait types for each type of fishing environment.  There are also live baits and lures.  Each fish respond differently to each kind of bait and higher level fish will not respond to lower level bait, however low level fish will practically bite on anything that suits their water type, but they still bite more frequently certain baits over others, which allow you to narrow down what you catch in each area based on the baits you have available.

    - There are around 40 different baits you can use between all the different fishing holes.  There is probably over 100 different areas you can fish from since each major area has anywhere between 4-10 fishing areas.  (many fish are shared over some of these areas though)

    - There's a fishing log that keeps track of all of your catches and the areas in which you can catch those fish.  It also has records for the largest of each fish you've caught and also has little flavor text for each fish to tell a little about their history.

Fishing actually has somewhat of an impact on the economy.  Certain fish are required as cooking ingredients for food.  Fish can also be desynthesized into shards which are used among all the crafting classes.  There are even some fish that can be desynthesized into items that can be used for casual gear commonly used for glamours.  (transmogrification for those familiar with WoW)

http://www.disciplesoftheland.com/ is a good site if you want to read up a bit more on fishing.  My first MMO was FFXI and its fishing system was similar in nature to FFXIV, but not quite as in depth.  It really got me into fishing in video games (well, there was Breath of Fire, but I digress) and it's something I've continued to enjoy when I'm not out bashing monsters.

You ever see dance, dance, revolution where arrows are on the screen and you move in the direction of the arrows? That's how fishing was there. The fish would fight you and if you didn't counter it's moves it got away. If you found out the combo move for a particular type of fish you would be able to perform it quick enough to reel them in. Don't know if they ever made much out of the fish you caught but back when I played they weren't used to cook or anything, just as trophies in a way. Then each zone kept track of the largest fish caught in the area and that would show to anyone in the zone looking. So few people fished that it was easy enough to get on the chart. Couple times I caught random things like a water-logged boot, those were fun.

Looks like this person made a video

yes, i agree the vanguard systems i liked the most, even tho it was quite a lot affected by your connection (lag).

The most fun I've had fishing in a video game, I must say would be Zelda Ocarina of Time.
