Return to MMO

Being in the MMO genre for well over 15 years can have its toll on you and the games that come with it.  I have almost played and tried every major and minor release game that has come across these boards and like everyone else, it seems like all I ever do is look forward to the next adventure.

I'm tired of that.  Tired of always 'waiting' for that perfect MMORPG to come around and honestly I have been 'waiting' for it since 2003.  Hell, most of you probably feel the same or at least do not realize it.  WoW was my first introduction into the 'EQ' style of MMORPG.  Before that I played UO and that was my introduction into MMO's and RPG's way back in the day.  So after getting bored with WoW and trying every other game to full fill my MMO need, I had quickly realized that the majority of games were about the initial box sales rather than trying to keep you hooked on a game.  I grew tired of questing and leveling.

10 years later and I find myself tired of questing and the same rinse and repeat of all these 'new' games.  I looked forward to Vanguard, the Age of Conan, WAR; all not meeting expectations or just became underwhelming.  Now you can see the same kind of behavior with games like WildStar and Star Citizen.

So I finally threw my towel in and said f*ck it.  I will enjoy the games that define what MMO means to me.  A persistence world that can and will bend to the players that play it.  Not some action adventure game that the players have no sake in.  UO and EVE seem to be the strongest and most powerful games that really define this genre, to me.

What about you guys, how do you feel about the genre?

After trying most MMOs at one time or another i allways find myself back in Asherons Call. The random loot, open non instanced map, non linear dungeons. physics engine that allows you to dodge magic and missle weapons is just what i like.

I tried alot of new MMOs to see what the hype is all about, and honestly other than the graphics these new games are just to easy and boring after the first month.  im sorry but when it takes a average player a month to max level thats way to fast. you better have some awsome stuff for max level players to do or you lose alot of subs after that free month.

I guess they just all seem the same, log in click the NPC with the flashy thing go fetch somthing for him or kill 10 of those. look on the mini map and see right where the mob is your looking for. i mean come on, people need to stop buying this garbage or it will never stop.

I personally feel that MMOs are supposed to be played for 6 months or less; I'm kind of baffled by the fact that a lot of people seem to be looking for a "permanent" MMO.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

If EVE had better gameplay and a focus on player characters instead of player spaceships I would probably never stop playing it. It's the deepest and richest MMO I've played (and one of the hardest to get into) but I just can't stick around too long because the gameplay really is that dull and while I enjoy flying around in a spaceship I prefer to play a character instead.

I came back to RuneScape for a few months and had loads of fun in such a "kiddy" game.

Only for people who play them constantly.  For people like me who only has maybe an hour or two at a time, a couple times a week, they last a long time, but I'm not trying to gobble up the content as fast as I can, I have a life.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

Asheron's Call was a fantastic game.  I actually played it at one of my buddies house and was baffled at how unique the game was.  I wish I could go back and actually give it a fair try, but I was knees deep in UO at the time I didn't want another game.  AC2 I gave a try, but it just didn't have the same charm or hardcore features as the original.  I find it funny how these classic games are outliving some of the new "MMO" games that come out and pull the plug after a couple of years.

I disagree 100%.  A true MMO is suppose to be able to cater to players so they stay for months or even years on end.  It is a place you are suppose to have a community of people that work together (or against) just for the fun of it or for even friendship.  Yes, I suppose most of the trash that comes out today can only hold someones attention for a couple of months.  But back when UO was release, my buddies and I played that game for over 4 years; straight.  15 years overall (off and on).  To me an MMO is suppose to be an alternate life that you live out in our character, which is why I cannot find a good MMO anymore because they are just action rpg games that really could be played solo.

EVE was a tricky one for me.  Honestly, I have probably played the EVE trial at least 10 times, and that is no exageration.  It took me a bit to get past the fact that I did not have a character but rather a ship.  In the end, though, they are both vessels for us to experience another world.  EVE offers too many 'UO' like features for me to pass up.

Now that I have explored the indie game movement more closely my view of the state of gaming is much more positive.

Additionally things like kick  starter, player created youtube videos, and in general a large gaming community who has had enough of the AAA junk.

Xyson, Wurm, Darkfall, Eve, Fallen Earth, Rust.....these are just the few I have played who are doing things light years ahead of the big boys.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

A lot of people here will agree with what you said. GW2 was a nice try to detach from the same old, but it didn't really pull it through fully and buckled back on offering gear grind because apparenly the devs couldn't think of anything else to keep people playing.

It seems, however, that there are several games now cooking that are trying to bring back the social/exploration/RPG part of MMOs that has been long neglected in favor of more straightforward "WoW" mechanisms.

Personally, I'm keeping my eye on The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Everquest Next (Landmark) and Albion Online, although the latter seems to be a bit too much PvP focused in my eyes and I fear it will end up in the same mindless deathmatch pile as Darkfall and Mortal Online did.

    There's hope.

For everything from the OP.......Here is the problem we face now :

With all mmo's being junk, and short 30 day games, this will cause everyone to buy everything...People are starving for something to play !!!!!

I found out I like playing games that provide the most for my money.

With that I mean I don't like paying $50 for a game that I finish in 2 days and leave it on the shelves collecting dust. I like to play games over and over again.

With that said it became obvious themepark MMOs are not the thing for me, you reach endgame and there is no challenge whatsoever.  So I stick by the sandbox games, be it multplayer or singleplayer.

tried all themeparks: they all died or collecting dust now, I play EVE since it was born and never stopped playing.

Big table where thousands to millions people role playing.

Current design are far from what it original mean so of course the genre lost it charm ,

if you play current MMORPGs for what early games bring you to this genre , you will become up set and don't want to play them anymore.

And no matter they try to make new MMORPGs to a single player RPG , it never become as good as SP RPG.

Maybe if they want to become second WOW that bad, they should make a RTS before make a MMORPGs and call it world of whatever.

With years of disappointed , i don't think i interested about new coming MMORPGs anymore .

All i see are empty promise.

Maybe age of MMORPG ready gone with the rise of high graphic

Enjoy our old games and dream about a MMORPG with bigger world fill with mystery and challenge .

At lest , big enough to not end in 2 or 6 months. And no quest hubs level up , i tired of them .

I don't mean to take away quests , just don't give exp as reward so i can treat them as side dish , not main course.
