Just saw this on their twitter feed:

Very interesting that they thought there would be getting a Teen and ending up with a Mature.
Makes sense though, haven't all the Elder Scrolls games been M?
Lol I struggle to find anything that warrant a mature rating...........
Anyway, if it gets a mature rating, more teenagers will buy it, that's how it works.
So it is not such a bad news for Bethesda after all.
Probably better like this in the long term, teens who want to play will as usual get dad or mom to buy it and pay the monthly (if they ever continue past the first month)
Good on them for not trying to meet the T rating by changing content
Lol...ain't it the truth.

Honestly I don't think it really matters. I don't know about the previous games but having a mature rating I think is the better way to make an mmo these days.
I have recently been playing AoC just to give it a shot cause I never played it and some online friends are playing it and I must admit, it's the first "Mature" mmo that I have played and I am really enjoying the foul language and added blood/gore. I think it really adds something to the immersion into the game as well as helps make the world feel living and real. Makes it much easier to get out of my daily mind set and very easy to get into the game.
I think it was a good call on the devs as well to say in that statement that they aren't going to change content for a different rating, shows they know what type of game they want to make and not going to make any excuses for it or change it based on other peoples beliefs.
2 thumbs way up to the ESO Devs, keep up the good work and we'll see ya in april, or sooner if we get the magic e-mail!
Their is nothing in the content that would need changing lol, the game doesn't need a mature rating.
IMO any game with a sub should have that age restriction, how many minors can afford a regular sub without parental approval?
This is not a comment on the age classification of the content however, just my thoughts on payment methods and how children should be protected from things they cant afford. I cant say I found anything in the beta beyond something I would let my teenage kids play however.
ESO doesn't come close to AOC when it comes to being a mature mmo. ESO is no more mature than WOW, Rift or any of the other T rated mmo's.

And how would I know that ?
From past experience, language in TES game could be classified as Mature (by a prude).
This is GREAT NEWS!
It tells me its atleast as good as SKYRIM, which ALSO was rated M for Mature.
It also tells me that the storylines are probably more geared for Adults and Adult situations.
All teenages will still be able to get their hands on it. What parent really cares about letting their kids watch rated R movies and play M shooting games these days.
Bottom Line, if skyrim can do as well as it did with a Mature raiting, so can ESO.
And who said you would know that? ;}
Morrowind had skooma but T rating.
Oblivion had T then changed to M

ESRB categorizes this as Mature, a lot of people do not realize this is in everyday TV. How many times have you seen this on TV in just one day.

MATURE
Content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. May contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.
Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language.
The ESRB site doesn't have the details of why they rated it "M" yet - probably won't until after the game is released.
But this is what they had to say about Skyrim:
Rating Summary: This is a fantasy role-playing game in which players assume the role of Dovakin, a prophesied figure with the power to combat dragons in the fictional world of Skyrim. As players traverse through mountainous 'open-world' environments, they complete missions and quests that impact the eventual fate of their character. Players use swords, bows and arrows, axes, and magic attacks (e.g., fireballs, ice shards) to kill various enemies (e.g., wolves, dragons, human bandits and soldiers). As players engage in melee-style combat, some sequences are highlighted by slow-motion effects, particularly for decapitations. Large blood-splatter effects also occur during combat, and some environments are stained with blood or body parts (e.g., heads impaled on spikes). Some sequences allow players to injure/kill nonadversary characters, including prisoners chained to a wall; they scream in pain amid splashes of blood or fire. As the game progresses, the dialogue and on-screen text contains references to sexual material (e.g., “. . . all the whores your heart, or any other organ, desires,” “She . . . raped the men as cruelly as Bal had ravished her,” and “Remember when you thought [he] was . . . intent on making you . . . into his personal sex slave?”). Alcohol such as wine, mead, and ale can be purchased and consumed by players' character throughout the game; in one sequence, players can engage in a drinking contest with another character, which eventually results in slurred speech (e.g., “One more. No problemsh . . . Thash grape!”).

I would have guessed as others have said. More realistic graphics (?!?!) gives more weight to the violent acts in game.
Equally though I am shocked it got an M. It's less violent than many kids cartoons nowadays.
Then again we have to protect the little nippers from the big bad evil video games. After all don't them getting any violent ideas or leanings as they grow up...the news media coverage on the world after all is all sunshine and lollipops and on 24hrs a day...
If I could take a guess, I'd say it's because of alcohol etc.
Fairly silly if you ask me.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Yeah, if you think the violence in pretty much any game is bad, go on Netflix and look up "Happy Tree Friends," lol.

Well...that makes me conflicted......
One of the reasons I didnt have any interest in ESO is because of the T rating...so now they have a M rating...but I dont quite think they rise to the M rating and if they knew they would get a M ratiing...how much better would they have made the game/setting?
And I remember when AoC deserved their M rating....is there still even one topless woman in the game anymore?
Or it could be putting the Goblin King's head on a spike (18:30 of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWXjzLEGV9U) Maybe the goblins complained.
