He was responding to the question: "If you could relaunch a shutdown title which one would you pick and what would you do differently this time?"

Now this might not mean an SWG relaunch, but at this point in time, ANY SWG type sandbox game would be a godsent.

I prefer sending poop myself, they must have quite the collection by now! (And a local zookeeper rich, too.)

This could be something to get excited about but this is Smedley we are talking about here. Wait and see.

After reading further into his AMA, it appears that it's NOT an SWG relaunch.  But still an SWG type game is just as appealing for me.

Q: "In terms of the brand spanky new unannounced MMO, will it be based on an existing IP or something new I should work myself into a frothy craze over?"

A: "completely new IP. The data is on the interwebs.. someone just has to find it."

    ".....you can come home now"

Who can....the 250k peak players, or the 10k it had in 2006?

It would appear that he also confirmed that it was a LucasArts decision to shut down SWG: http://www.reddit.com/r/EQNext/comments/1w2lu2/im_john_smedley_president_of_soe_amaa/cey5xki

Lucas Arts not continuing the license was never in any doubt....and do you blame them? The game had dropped to 10k subs in 2006, god knows what it was before its shutdown.

That's an interesting stat you made up with no source other than a random guess, yet you state it like it's a fact :)  They never announced subscription numbers - we'll never know its population stats throughout its life.

EA signed a 10 year license for all star wars games with Disney. So I doubt it will be Star wars.

It's a number that floats around the internet that supposedly is accurate; for one particular Friday night sometime in 2006.

If he is waiting for SWG players to ever "come home" to SOE, it is going to be a long wait.
  • NaralNaral Member UncommonPosts: 748

Not that I have any love for SOE and certainly not Smedley, but shutting down SWG had way less to do with either of those two entities than it did EA and Lucas Arts.  The only hope for a good SW MMO (which I doubt highly we will ever see transpire) is in 8 years when the abortion that is SWTOR is milked out and can be put down.

I doubt we will see anything like SWG in the SW world again.

Shh, don't burst his bubble in that I completely made up the number out of thin air.

Just had to throw this one out there. What IF, SOE bought up the repopulation game? From what I've seen from that, they're already doing the SWG crafting, or pretty close to it. Don't know much other than that about it.

Could that be the case here?

I find it very confusing why now--only now--Smed is so committed to the SWG crowd with this new found dedication to us.

Didn't he throw us under the bus eight years ago to chase the kiddies with his fast-action combat and "kill, treasure, repeat?"  And where are those kiddies now?  Thrown under the bus--just like we were--with the closure of the kid titles (Clone Wars Adventures, FreeRealms and Wizardry Online).

And the whole ironic thing about this is that WE TOLD HIM SO.  We told him that one in the hand is better than two in the bush.  We told him that he shouldn't mess with a good thing; that his model eight years ago worked and they needed to double down on it, not throw it under the bus.

See, WE KNEW.  We knew that what SOE and Smed were doing eight years ago wasn't going to last.  It was good to be proven right, but questions remain.  If Smed has this big bromance with the Pre-CU crowd, why haven't we seen him in the Veteran's Refuge?  Eight years I've been waiting for Smed to come to the Veteran's Refuge, and eight years Smed was nowhere to be found there.  If he was interested in us, he always knew where to find us and make his case.

I'll tell you what.  If Smed comes down to the Veterans Refuge, I'll know he's serious.  But I don't know if he has the guts to come down there and talk with the likes of Wildcat84, Jest0rRodo and Shayde.

Maybe that's an indication that it was LucasArts that caused the problems rather than SOE?  Maybe that's why SOE has now publicly in a number of instances announced that they won't be doing IP license work again?  One only needs to look at TOR to see a repeat of the mistakes made with SWG...and there's only one common denominator across both games ;)

I played SWG when it launched and loved it. If they create something similar to that including the 'little' things like dancing classes, farming materials by having to locate them first and allowing me to drop a class and pick another up then sure, this will be a great game with the new graphics publishers can produce now.

Will I try it? Yes, of course I will. Why would I not? Due to something Sony did in the past? Psssht!

I've stayed away from any game involving smed or soe since SWG, and doubt a SWG like game is going to get me back.
