Yeah, I didn't even know their was a demand for a sequel to the Van Helsing game... I thought everyone pretty much disliked it.

lol that would be the first MMO to use friend codes instead of names. Does Nintendo really know what the internet is? Oh and if you lost your console you'd have to make a new account.

Maybe it was horrible TO YOU, but everyone I know thought it was excellent...EXCEPT YOU of course.

I don't know even the kids thought it was bad and they play anything.  If teenagers dislike a video game, that pretty much says it all.  Even the guy at the resale shop would not take it, says no demand for it.

What, no Legend of Grimrock 2? Blasphemy! Burn the heretic!

Anyway, although it's not 'indie', honorable mention should go to Might and Magic X: Legacy. Yes, the graphics are simple, yes it has Uplay, but those two things & the difficulty are all I can find that's wrong with the game. Definitely a worthwhile title for anyone looking for an old-fashioned, grid based dungeon blobber, the existence of which was made possible by the success of Grimrock. So in a way, Almost Human is responsible for TWO games which have sucked away chunks of my life, soon to be three.

Van Helsing is mediocre. The atmosphere & aesthetic of the game is really good, everything else is pretty lackluster. It really plays more like Gauntlet or Nox than Diablo in that the only real challenge comes from the absolute hordes of enemies they throw at you. Not bad, but not very good either, and Neocore really isn't a company worthy of trust, IMO. Just ask most people who bought King Arthur 2...

Edit: Stupid me, forgot to mention the game I'm shilling in my signature, Paper Sorceror!  It's a really good old-school RPG with a cool aesthetic, which itself has a perfectly reasonable (in game logic anyway) explanation as to its existence. Also, the reference to Wizardry is made by myself and others quite deliberately.

Plus it's $5, less than your average fast food lunch these days.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

Hey, maybe these games will make MMORPG.com's "Best Almost But Not Quite Hybrid MMOs" list for 2014!

It got pretty good reviews. I never would of even looked at it but It's score caught my eye on steam. The user ratings where also positive.

    Transistor looks awsome.

I suspect WL2 is overpriced. I loved the original on my C128 but $59 is a bit steep IMHO.

Transistor will be awesome. Supergiant did an amazing job on Bastion.

    WT.....FUCK?!?!?!

Where the hell is Project Eternity aka Pillars of Eternity?!?!?!  Or Legend of Grimrock or Age of Decadence for that matter.  A true RPG is Age of Decadence is looks like in the making where one can actually role play their character and actually progress the game that way.

Pretty crappy list, since most I've never heard of and look downright bad compared to others that are coming out.

Agree with Furbans, where is Project Eternity on the list? This could be the next Baldurs Gate.

Again, the criteria was that these are truly independent studios and that the game releases in 2014. Obsidian is hardly considered an "indie studio" though I am -really- looking forward to Project Eternity. ;)

Not impressed with WL2 it has a lot of potential but how often have we heard that and it never realized it.

Banner Saga has my vote for game of the year. Damn game actually made me cry at the end.

While there are justifiable concerns about quality, who would have thought that we would be looking at a list of best indie games to watch?

My concern for the future is how long will such funding last. There was once a time when paying a sub was the norm, now that seems like a bad word to many. Will Kickstarter games be getting this sort of funding in five years time?

Out of that list, the two that I will try are Wasteland 2 and Elite Dangerous.  The only thing that bugs me about Wasteland 2, at least currently, is that they a charging a ridiculous price on Steam for "early access".  It kind of leaves a bad taste in the mouth towards that dev.

    Where is Divinty: original sins?

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

Where's Grimoire from Golden Era Games then? You cannot consider your list a real list unless the great Grimoire is on there.

SBFord you might want to add this little gem to your collection too http://kingdomcomerpg.com I feel this will overshadow many games this year if it makes it out that is. Its looking bright that it might slip in this is of the end of the year though and has my support.

    Side topic and recent news

    http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/27/5352004/nintendo-reportedly-making-smartphone-mini-games

the company is planning to leverage smartphones as a platform for marketing videos and, more interestingly, free mini-games designed to drive new users to Nintendo hardware.

The mini-games are reportedly designed to make players understand the appeal of Nintendo's software in a short period of time and convince them to purchase the full experience elsewhere.
