The impression I'm getting after watching the videos and reading the articles is that it's not a bad MMO, but not a very good Elder Scrolls game.
It doesn't seem as if the media only NDA lift is working out the way Zenimax Online would have liked.

I'm not really sure how that changes what seems to be a rather general consensus of the game so far.
The game's going to be put up against previous entries in the series, and it doesn't appear to be holding up very well. The previewers don't need an extra 200 hours to draw comparisons between this Elder Scrolls game and the previous, or even this MMO as compared to others.
The experience in the first 20 hours isn't going to change drastically at some point, except maybe when it comes to doing the AvA stuff.
In the end it's an elder scrolls game and the expectations people are going to have going into it is that it's an elder scrolls game. What's going to be more likely, people expecting another elder scrolls game, or them expecting a DAoC game?
More people have played an elder scrolls game at some point than have ever played DAoC. If the experience isn't on par with what they got from previous elder scrolls titles, there's going to be a lot of let down. Because people are expecting an elder scrolls game.
I haven't been left with a "best" MMO impression, just good. In fact I've seen some complaints in the previews about some of the MMO aspects of the game, most notably things like social aspects; it sounds as if there are some barriers to just playing with your friends. I read something about a questionnaire to change phases and such.
I have yet to actually see anyone point out anything truly great about the game.
I'm having fun. That is all that matters to me.

Most of the previews are based on a very limited scope of the game.
It is clearly a game that has a progression built in.. they don't want to throw you the best zones, gear sets and spells at level 5 like some games do.
Are the starting zones super amazing and blow your socks off? No, not really. They're designed to ease you into it, get you used to the play style while giving you a taste of the cool stuff to come.
After 15 years of MMOs, ESO is a game I'm looking forward to. It delivers that fun factor for me and frankly that's all I care about. I'm not after some wild innovation, some amazing ground breaking feature that no one else has done before; I'm looking to just have fun and enjoy.
Honestly these games that attempt some wild revolutionary feature usually end up flopping hard anyway which is why personally I feel like delivering a solid product of enjoyment is what should count; not some gimmicky new feature.
Yeah, doesn't sound anything like any of the previous elder scrolls games, does it.
I have to wonder if having a DAoC guy, who was responsible for injecting the WoW type aspects into that game, make an elder scrolls game was a wise choice.
I would think putting someone in charge wanted to make an elder scrolls game, as opposed to a DAoC sequel, would have been the way to go.
In every MMO I've played they have all played the same from beginning to end. The only thing that actually changes is the amount of content you may have access to.
Questing isn't going to change, combat isn't going to change, character models aren't going to change, character progression isn't going to change.
If people end up finding the beginning of the game lack luster, not only are they likely to find the later half the same it's more likely than not that they won't be sticking around to even find out.
That's true for just about everything. Your reply makes no sense to me. I will not pass something up just because I may get bored with it later on. So hate on, while I have fun.

Just like for everything else. Everybody is looking for something else.
There is no game for evebody.
pre-order purchased, about all I can say
They are trying to use Elder Scrolls IP so of course they are going to compare it to that. You wouldn't want them to advertise it as DaoC to people would you?
God forbid someone has a little bit of fun with a game .
There is a big difference in comparing two gaming experiences for the sake of comparison.. and comparing the two with the sole purpose is to see if it is just like a console /pc sprpg... They are not going to be the same. To say otherwise is to be ignorant.
And that's the root of most negativity. Skyrim comparisons are inevitable. Forget that and it stands on its own just fine.

Exactly, this was SWTOR's problem, it wasn't knights of the old republic 3. It was an mmo.
This is what's happening here it's another mmo in another skin and you can bet i'll be playing it when it goes free to play, and all the hype is over.
I recently subbed back up to swtor and am loving it, but what initially bothered me about SWTOR going free to play is i bought into it at launch, invested all that money, bought into all the hype and a mere few months later i get preferred status, anyone dropping a couple bucks on the market got too. huge price difference.
So playing this one safe, i'll sub up when it goes free and go from there.
Let's not forget the media's love affair with GW2, it was a special time, when GW2 was the most amazing game ever to grace our lives.
. . . and then it released.
So whether or not TESO is a game for you, the media is what it is - I can't say they have the best track record.
SWTOR 85 press rating average on Metacritic.
GW2 90
WAR 86
WoW Cata 90!!!
Vanguard 68
I'm not saying you or anyone else should even try TESO let alone like it. That's totally up to you.
