I don't want to create a debate of good or bad. I just want to know what current game this ESO can be compared to. I'm considering it and would like to understand which past game it resembles the most.

There's dozens of sites offering ESO beta keys for this weekend. Google it and play the game. Your own opinion is always the best opinion.

    No, only reason is information.

Although there isn't really anything that is completely innovative, it does stand out by itself in many ways.  It is somewhat like Skyrim and some of the other TES games, but not really "Skyrim online" or anything like that.  Some of the playstyle reminds me of D&D Online with mixed elements of Neverwinter and Guild Wars 2, but it does the game a disservice to really compare it to those as there are only hints of elements of those games within TESO.  It does have some flavors of EQ2 in terms of the artwork and such, but again, comparing it to any game does not really cover it.

As mentioned above, the best way is to see for yourself.  This weekend's beta has been opened pretty much to everybody...although ZOS does not call it an "open" beta, you would have to be a complete internet noob to not have found at least a few sites giving out keys...so try it yourself!

I dont know if there really IS a past game that you can reasonably compare it to.  It feels more like, mechanically, Skyrim with MMO elements inserted into it.  Obviously the open world is tiered rather than scaling, since they wanted to have character progression as a main element.

If I had to name a game I'd say Dark Age of Camalot (in theme only), because of the 3 faction pvp and 3 faction questing zones, with traditional elder scrolls type combat.

I think the closest "spiritual" comparison is Age of Conan.

Although very different, they two games both use a combination of "semi-manual" combat and the traditional MMO-style abilities.

Both games are based in an existing IP that is more "realist" in setting and aesthetic.

Both games have a high focus on PvP endgame, but get there through a conventional quest-based  "you're the hero, save the world" PvE levelling system that includes great lore.

There are numerous differences of course, but in spirit i think it's the closest.  The other game that's very close to ESO but that very few have played is Fallen Earth, while the setting is vastly different, the combat is almost identical as well the open skill system, the "Crafter everything" mindset and the mostly PvP endgame.

Even though i don't PvP, i highly enjoyed both AoC and FE and now find myself enjoying ESO.

I never played DAoC, but that's the game it gets compared to most. Apparently, a lot of the people who worked on DAoC now work on ESO, and the PvP is set up similar to how it was in that game.

Apart from that, I don't really know. It has similarities to a lot of other games in various ways, but overall I would say it's its own game. It focuses on story and the quests are generally better than what you'll find in most other MMOs. The limited action bar is similar to what some other games have done, but they allow weapon swapping at level 15, so you actually have 12 abilities you can use, plus a slot for potions, plus you also have light attack, heavy attack, block, interrupt and dodge which can all be activated via the mouse buttons or directional controls (WASD). So the combat is more involved than some people think.

Enemies have telegraphs like in TSW and Wildstar. Targeting is similar to Tera. Crafting is not an involved process like in Vanguard. It's not a minigame. It's gather the necessary resources and click like in many other games. But where it separates itself is in its depth and what you can do with it. In ESO, you can upgrade existing items via crafting. You looted a rare chest piece? Well, collect the necessary components to upgrade it to epic. There is also research, where you can break down items to learn specific traits, and then apply those traits to the items you craft. So you can completely tailor the items you create to fit your build.

But like the other poster said, try it. That's really the best way to see what the game is like.

Thank you all for the information and yes I hope I have time to play it this weekend. The only reason I had a tinge of reservation to play the beta would be the amount of space it would take on my hard drive. I have never played any of the ESO games so I'm trying to get a feel before I download such a large amount of data.

It's nothing like guild wars 2. It feels like a TES game.

It has Star Trek Online shooter mode combat & animations, Skyrim quest system, Age of Conan visual style, SWTOR-ish static world design and GW2 WvWvW PvP.
