I seek to have fun in a game.  I'm not sure if I can qualify what makes the game fun for me though.  I think it's fun if I feel the developers are passionate about the game they are making.  I don't get that feeling from most MMOs today.  I'm sure the developers put a lot of effort into making the game, but I feel it's made to much on feedback, control groups, and marketing.  It's not made enough on what the developers enjoy.  A good example might be Everquest.  I enjoyed the game a lot.  I played Vanguard for a while and didn't like it much even tough it was made by the same people.  It's hard to say if you will like a game just because X feature is included.  That is too mechanical a thought process and has no account for heartt/feeling.

I strive to play my character the best way possible, including getting the best gear possible.

The goal is of course to have fun and archieve new things. That includes being able to solo stuff I couldnt solo before, and to help newbies, or whatever.

I seek gear/stats/abilities that fit my character conception. Rarely is it the "best" gear/stats/abilities.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

If I PvP I want the best gear so I don't become a liability to my side.  But there is another reason.  To cut through grind by being overgeared for content, thus killing mobs quickly.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

One of my major goals while playing is to advance my character. While this is not limited to level and gear they are a part of that goal. I want to become stronger, accumulate more knowledge and experience great adventures. In general the knowledge and adventures are the important parts but i see the gear as one of the more important tools that allow me to progress further. To answer your question more directly: i seek the best gear to become stronger and to help myself and my friends to work on other goals we have.

After WotLK, and I saw how Blizzard designed the game around gear (and the stupidity of starting with green gear each expansion), I don't play WoW for gear anymore. The only reason I would get any gear is for transmorg or to do the dailies within a lifetime as a healer.

As much as I talked about the EQ2 HQs and getting the Cloak of Flames (and all the steps to get it), I don't have any interest in getting the legendary cloak in WoW. It lacks meaning...can't be transmorged nor an item that would matter in another expansion. But in EQ2 that Cloak of Flames will be my permanent cloak, because of the work needed to get it, and how it's viewed as a meta-achievement (especially before the nerfs).

Items have to have value to a player to make it worthwhile to obtain. If it's just a expansion flavor, it can be ignored as the meaning it'll leave is just as worthless (which is how and why WoW can get sooo boring to play, achievements/goals/nice gear are worthless in but 2 years).

My reason is two-fold: Gear IS MMORPG's and to be the best that my character can be. It's one of my main goals and main joys, without some sort of metric to monitor power increase through stats I get bored of a game very quickly. Gear usually does this the best.

There are exceptions of course. I played DAoC for years with the same templates on some characters, but then again RvR is an end game no one has been able to challenge yet up until now.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV

For pvp mostly which is annoying because big gear differences are one of the main reasons for bad pvp in mmorpgs. I don't play mmos to get gear, I don't consider grinding for epic gear content and I don't get more satisfaction from grinding 2 weeks for an item or getting it from ah or as a pvp reward after 1-2 days of play. Hopefully more mmorpgs will get away from the usual "lv to max level then grind for months until you have epics, next expansion start grinding again" and move to a type of content which can be enjoyed without a special armor and with no need to hide lack of content behind item grind.

As long as i am having fun i keep pursuing character improvement at my own pace. When i start feeling that i must get the best gear to move forward the fun factor starts fading away and the game becomes a chore.

On a side note, the exact same thing happens to me with generic questing (which is why i cant tolerate them anymore). I do them at my own pace but most of them are so obviously placed without any meaningful purpose other than getting levels that they affect the fun factor negatively... very negatively.

I personally lost interest in gear grinding in World Of Warcraft, Being a guild leader of a 150+ person raiding guild for 3 years, it became a job trying to keep people happy, dealing with raid/loot drama, ect.. it all ruined the game for me, SO i quit wow and moved on to a more casual game, Lord Of The Rings Online.. The problem with LOTRO is the leveling, we are at 95 levels.. and since i tend to stay away from raiding, alts are an important aspect of the game for me, I currently have 4 character in Lotro above level 60, 1 at cap.. and various under 40.. to even THINK about doing a level grind again turns me off.. and i will not pay money for a level 50 character, its just not enough, I would consider buying a max level character, but anything less is a waste of money.. But now i cant even think about advancing my main in Lotro anymore.. even 10 levels discourages me, and i have pretty much quit playing Lotro as well... levels are old news, I like the path guild wars 2 is taking, once you reach cap, thats it.. no more level increases, but even 80 levels is very discouraging when it comes to alt-ing, especially in GW2.

Some of the things that interest me the most about an MMO is, Features, Exploration, Achivements, Crafting, Small Groups (3-6 mans) The ability to be able to reach max level solo if i want, having to depend on someone else to advance my character to max is not fun, but some small group content is always welcome, as long as its not a road block.

There are ALOT of games out there i would love to play, explore, just plain experience, but i just do not care to level again, if it was a low level cap of like 20, then i may be able to handle that, but anything more, and i just wont bother.. and i sure as hell wont pay a subscription to grind out boring ass content (kill 10 rats) just so game devs can milk you for sub fees, make  the game interesting enough so that i want to play and give you sub fees, do not force me to play for months on end, with boring content, just to fill your pockets with money...

You missed the only option that matters IMO.  I get gear and other character improvements to play the game.  To fight more powerful mobs, to be able to go places I wasn't able to go, to become stronger and more effective and able to advance through the game.  All the dick-waving, self-absorbed nonsense is stupid.  That's why end-game is so mindless, there's nowhere to advance to, why keep fighting for gear that doesn't mean anything?

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

I seek natural progression. Regardless what type of game if it has crafting then my character is going to wear or handle what I am capable of crafting. When there is depth in crafting I will seek out the best way to craft the best items.

I'm  patient player, in SWG it took me about 6 months to gather all to high end resources to craft the highest stat buffs.

So I seek for the best gear/weapons/items if it gives me a challenge not found in other type of games. I don't like going for the best gear by visiting several dungeons/cave's/raids over and over as that just doesn't feel natural.
