I swear, I have never seen a group of fans take so much time out of their lives to bash something they have and most likely never had any intention of playing.
Most of the "doomsayers" as you call them have also referenced the point that ZOS will have a huge stack of content that has been cut from launch, specifically so they can roll it out as "additional" content moving forward.
You may be happy at having so much content removed from launch so it can be spoon fed to you a little bit at a time but most players can see straight through this trick and do not see it as a positive.
We have seen this shady practise time and time again with recent mmorpg releases. Therefore drawing on recent experience and comparing to how every other modern themepark drip feeds pre-fab content does not make one a "doomsayer" it simply makes one a realist.
Realists would also take into consideration other possibilities because that is reality at this point, it hasn't happened yet. It also depends on what they mean by this statement. If you read the finer details, they do not specify what this content is, only that it's not small one off additions like "funny hats".
You're essentially the textbook example of a doomsayer actually, reread your post. In your scenario the devs are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Example being..."holding back content" convenient argument if I ever saw one, no matter what they do they're in the wrong. This whole post is ironic, so much so I have to assume it's intentional.
You call me a doomsayer....
I base my outlook on what I see going on around me. And I see ZOS doing a 180 on just about every promise they have made so far...
They are not damned if they do, damned if they dont at all.....for example they could choose to honour all of the promises made to date and give us a game that lives up to the true potential of the IP. They would mosr certainly not be damned if they did that
What they appear to be doing is spending years telling us what we want to hear then doing a 180 on almost all of it whilst reverting to a by the numbers themepark with obvious cash shop potential at the 11th hour.
According to closed beta testers ZOS have even stated that they are no longer making the game for ES fans or mmorpg players but going their own way....combined with all the other 180s and nerfs to accessibility, making a spoon fed story based PvE levelling experience the only viable way to level etc etc
Fantastic. That is NOT the game they have been selling us for the last few years.
Any chance to have a link for ALL this stuff they have done a 180 on? I would really like to see the link about the Closed Beta testers and ZOS comment to them. You seem so certain about all this so you must have proof to back it up right?
As for the content that will be released that they are working on. Every field does this, do you really think when Apple releases a new iPhone that they don't have a new one or two in the works? When for releases their '14 models you don't think they are working on the '15 and '16 models? Yep just like ESO IS WORKING ON FUTURE CONTENT.
I havent got the time or inclination to do your research for you but just for starters how about their commitment that they would never go down the nickel n dime / pay gated content route?
How about the commitments to making a game that we would play and enjoy however we wanted without being forced to follow mainline PvE story quests?
How about the commitment that farming and group content would be a viable way to level?
How about the commitment that crafting was going to be the route to BiS gear?
How about the commitment that addons would receive full and comprehensive support?
How about the commitment that you would not be forced to PvE if you just want to PvP?
All of the above has either been nerfed heavily or simply no longer part of the plan. As for their comments about not making the game for ES fans or mmorpg players, that comment was cited in a very large and popular thread on this board in the last few days and came straight from the mouth of a closed beta tester along with several other negative comments about the state of the game and the fact that ZOS haveall but stopped communicating to testers.
If you want to claim that closed beta tester is a liar then more power to you but I am sure you can find the thread yourself if you are interested enough.
I wish I was more positive about this game. I just don't trust the decision makers . Crafting is the latest to get watered down.Listening to the devs parse their words on crafting is like listening to Washington politicians.
Heck they don't even wait for updates they just make changes.I still believe they want to wedge things into the cash shop that subscribers should not have to pay for.
"UPDATES" from this company are concerning. All I want is for them to say what they are going to do.....then do it...No twists...no spins...no second thoughts.....no responding to customer input.JUST DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO DO.....do it....and no more.

Nothing will make these doomsayers happy. They will spends the next few years wasting their time complaining, crying about a VIDEO GAME they don't play. Just like other games they have these things called roadmap. These people think content takes a min to make they have no knowledge of process to create a video game .
They didn't say we have all this content sitting on the shelf collecting dust. They said we are working on content for future updates. Yeah keep posting your doom and gloom sounds like a very productive way to live. While the rest spend their time on something they enjoy.
Maybe you should cool your fanboy jets and at least get your storie's straight...some of your co-fans in this very thread claim they have indeed been working on this content for the last 12 months?
So either they have this content ready to roll and it has been that way for some time (therefore cut from launch) which will allow them to hit the content cycle they have committed to.
OR the content has not been worked on for the last 12 months in which case there is no way they will hit the content cycle they have committed to. So which is it?
You can't have it both ways.
Yes. Only 2 choices because as we all know, life is black and white and grey doesn't exists.
How about - they laid out a content road-map and made a decision what they were targeting for launch and what they were targeting for post launch. And then they went to work on all of it while prioritizing the launch content.
Somewhere along the line they even changed their minds about a couple of those that were not even meant for launch and moved them forward: vampires & werewolves and adventure zones.
We already know what some of the upcoming content is: a PVE/PVP "dungeon" in the middle of Cyrodiil like Darkness Falls in DAoC. The Thieve's Guild and justice system, the Dark Brotherhood, other adventure zones since they've always talked about them in the plural and only one is coming at launch....
I'm not aware of anything that was supposed to make it for launch that was "held back" as you like to insinuate. But I am aware of the opposite.
So why is it so hard to grasp that they have been working on some stuff for quite a while without the launch deadline and they will kick those projects up a notch or two when the launch targets are met? It's like some of you guys have never worked in any kind of job that had more than one department or had 6 months targets, 1 year plans, 2 year plans, etc.

You just lost all credibility for actually thinking rational when you uttered the words "making it a serious threat to WoW"
Get over yourself. Stop trying to transfer your hate over to the developers of a game.
You have some reading comprehension problems.
I agree 100% with you Gmdzro, most people who don't think this game could be as bigger then WoW are the same people who don't realize that Skyrim alone sold 20 million copies.
What you don't seem to realise, or choose to ignore is that Skyrim sold less than half of that number at full price. The rest of the sales came once it had been reduced down in price and/or was available as a bundled deal.
Difference being this game is full price with a sub...that will naturally limit the console sales by a large degree this time around because in my experience console gamers do not like paying sub fees. All of my rl friends that are console gamers have already said that will not buy the game due to the high price plus sub fee.
Most people can recognise that WoW as a PC based mmorpg was a freak occurence, it's success will not be repeated. Ever.
I can't really speculate on consoles too much as I am a purely PC based gamer, all I can do is go on the feedback of my rl friends and colleagues who do game on consoles.
As far as PC release goes, yeah it will sell around 1.75 - 2 million boxes imo and I would envisage a sub base of maybe 300 - 500k, decreasing year 2 onwards as new shiny stuff gets released...
Actually I think it will pretty much track the success of SWTOR in terms of numbers....which will never be "bad" but will also never be recognised as living up to its true potential.
Doesn't matter if it didn't sell at full price, it still sold 20 million copies, plus you need to put the ol crystal ball away, it makes people sound rather silly;)

Which is why it should have been a sub if it wanted high quality updates like ESO is going to have.
You must be new to MMOS i guess if you think ESO is first P2P MMO to make such a promise and is actually going to fulfill it.

Sadly when it come to MMOS and promises made by devs it is mostly black and white.
For how long you have been playing MMOS Iselin? you have been around here longer and yet i am really disappointed that you out of all people would buy into promises made by devs. i thought you were smarter than that.
Even if they can do it, i don't see it being more than just a couple of new quests and the standart balance patches, bug fixes, etc. Then a few months down the line there'll be, maybe, new dungeons and rvr map locations. Maybe they're preparing a Darkness Fall in the Imperial City.
I don't think these updates will matter much if the base game can't keep players engaged anyway. GW2 releases more updates than anyone else and still the general reaction i see across the net is "meh" (they really should do an expansion).
EDIT: But i have to agree with those that say this has to happen, otherwise i don't even know why i'd pay a sub. If a B2P game can release content regularly (content that ranges from average to good and is temporary, but still content), i P2P games has no excuse in my book. We'll see.

You are entitled to your opinion of course.
Difference being yours is based purely on sucking up everything the people who are selling you sometihng say and reciting it as gosepl. Whereas my opinions are based on the "roadmap" for all recent themepark mmorpgs.
I base my opinions on previous experience whereas you base yours on blind hope.
And I seriously have no idea what you are talking about, I made this account a couple of days ago following the cancellation of my SWTOR sub as I was hoping that this game would be everything the devs promised before they started taking money for it. Turns out if has been just another marketing campaign for what looks to be just another generic themepark with all of its cool stuff gradually removed at the 11th hour leaving a by the numbers mmorpg just like the rest of the current crop.
I love how you label me a troll for having serious concerns about the direction of this game, along with many other posters....I am not unique in my view or my concerns but you just go ahead and label me a troll anyway....
I should expect no less from someone that thinks its cool to poke fun at mental health issues like it seems you do from a scan of your post history.

I found GW2 had great content updates, if not the best. Many people still play it, I however prefer some kind of vertical progression instead of pure horizontal progression. But you can't deny no other games rolled out content like GW2 does.
Acheron's Call not only did it, but was far superior at keeping those updates coming for years.

Haa!!
People who you are labeling as haters and doomsayers are actually much more smarter and experinced i am afraid. They have learnt from past experinces to not buy into devs promises blindly because every company so far (with exception of GW2) has failed to keep up with big promises of 'huge updates every month'.
The nostalgia. The exact same therad got opened in TSW forums hating on Gw2 as it is was failure as an mmo, dead, without updates and that TSW would show the world how proper MMOs are meant to be.
Just in response to the hate towards Gw2 in this thread, ESO is so far not impressing as far as beta goes, yes it is a nice game and I like it for elder scrolls universe + great pvp however, it is not offering even a close experience to what GW2 did during the beta. It is behind both in hype and first impressions and if we are awaiting ESO to surpass Gw2, it has to offer something great with its updates. Don't forget to open threads about how Anet paid the media to rate their game btw. The exact same ones got opened when TSW fell behind in rating and suddenly a whole company got accused for paying money to get attention.
PS. Sorry if I sound too offensive but I would love to see gamers enjoying games instead of hating on others. It is all yours, why not enjoy all instead of being a fanboi and insult other games. If you are doing something by insulting Gw2 in this thread, it is proving that GW2 actually set the bar high and it would be an honor to beat it.
Sadly when it come to MMOS and promises made by devs it is mostly black and white.
For how long you have been playing MMOS Iselin? you have been around here longer and yet i am really disappointed that you out of all people would buy into promises made by devs. i thought you were smarter than that.
I guess some people just never learn.
There are so many factors that go into this point I don't feel like going into them all. Plans have been met and plans have failed to come to light in this industry due to countless reasons, be it failure to keep players, massive issues causing a change of focus, etc..etc..etc..
A business plan is a business plan, this type of commitment is what it is, part marketing, part wishful thinking and an equal measure of public statement. IF they fail they have to face that failure in the face of such promises.
DID Iselin say all this is going to happen? Did anyone here? No, that's the part that becomes hard to follow in these topics, one side saying the other is making definitive statements, while they sit there themselves making definitive statements, 9/10 the other side did no such thing at all.

Huge mistake on their part... just keep quite and do your thing... Push out nice clean meaningful updates within reasonable time periods and everyone will be happy. ( well most will be)
Now you have just stuck your foot in your mouth / put yourself behind the 8 ball... if you fail to deliver on this the lynch mobs with be out in full force...
The game that really did this kind of thing well was Asheron's Call... One month you get these statues that do nifty buffs in towns and then the next month they are doing horrible debuffs and spawning mobs such that towns are now very difficult to enter. Then one month after that a way is discovered to enter the statue plinths and fight the bosses.
I remember the monsters and natural drops changing in areas season to season with snow in the winter and flowers in the summer.
Who say I'm "buying into" anything? I could care less how skeptical anyone is about them being able to meet lofty content release schedules. My post wasn't about that. It was about people posturing with BS stories about how the only possible way they could do it is by holding back content that *should* have made it to launch.
That is just an ignorant argument that disregard how large projects with many different parts are managed in the real world when it's not some egotistical asshat running the show. Different things...on different schedules... all part of one whole.... welcome to the real corporate world.
Whether they manage to keep to their schedule or not is a whole different story that I won't waste any breath speculating about any more than wasting it on predicting the date when it goes F2P... another favorite idiotic topic around here.

I swear, I have never seen a group of fans take so much time out of their lives to bash something they have and most likely never had any intention of playing.
They will never accept it, they hate the thought of people being happy and excited over a game they want to crash an burn because they don't like it
Not really. It's just that we've heard this before.
The real issue is that it's the fans that come crying and complaining and turn on the game themselves. I've seen countless times on this site, and a few others. Fans believed those promises from the devs and later on would be the ones whining the most out of anyone.
Being excited for a game is fine. But i've seen the history of mmo fanbases.
I just hope they stick to it.... I have faith and confidence in the devs.
For the players I hope they stick to it as well. Asheron's Call was great for their monthly updates, storyline advancement, new dungeons, new quests added, new mobs, etc. It was a pretty neat system they had. For all of the people's complaining, the Living Story updates for GW2 were pretty good as well. Not every updated was the end all be all for fun, but they at least added something new to do instead of allowing the world to stagnate.
Even if ZO only adds small quests, new little dungeon areas to explore, etc. It's still better than absolutely nothing added for months on end. In many ways it's also better than the mega update patches that Blizzard does with WoW every few months before the current xpack goes into maintenance mode. After which it's 8-10 months of nothing.
What I think the general gaming public needs to remember (and it always tends to forget) is that developers will never be able to keep up with how quickly people can blow through content. Adding more developers to the mix doesn't really help either, it's just more hands in the pot (which tends to be worse). Thus, even though these ongoing patches will most likely be smallish in size and only add a little bit of content (relatively speaking) each time, it's better than having absolutely NOTHING added for months on end.
Sadly when it come to MMOS and promises made by devs it is mostly black and white.

For people who have been active on thee forums for years and have an ample experince with devs and MMOS i really expect them to be lot more prudent and take 'believe it when i see it' approach.
Yes there are many factors that go into failure of keeping up promises but that isn't the point here. The main point is people buying into these promises with 100% confidence and using it as an excuse to slag off those who are being cautious or refuse to believe in these promsies as 'haters'.
I just expected posters like Iselin to not even entertain the whole notion of 'they have been working on this content for years'. I mean come on every freakin dev company has made such claims before a MMO release.

Haa!!
People who you are labeling as haters and doomsayers are actually much more smarter and experinced i am afraid. They have learnt from past experinces to not buy into devs promises blindly because every company so far (with exception of GW2) has failed to keep up with big promises of 'huge updates every month'.
I am sorry if everyone is not so naive.
So because not everyone holds your same "everyone out to get me mentality " they are naive? And the only ones who are smart and experienced are the ones who share your beliefs ? Hmm that's sounds very naive and other things that we can't mention here.
I love meta arguments.
A guy come in tells everyone who doesn't buy into promises made by ESO devs is just haters and doomsayers.
I say people you are labeling as such are just skeptical due to past experinces and are not naive.
And then this gentleman comes in and accuses me off generalising even though i did no such thing.
Amazing really....how much arguments go round and round.
Comments
MAGA
I wish I was more positive about this game. I just don't trust the decision makers . The picture painted by Matt Firror early on of his vision for the game has changed ....constantly.Constantly in directions that dilute the features and nature of the game vision he enumerated, making it more and more like every other game.

Doesn't matter if it didn't sell at full price, it still sold 20 million copies, plus you need to put the ol crystal ball away, it makes people sound rather silly;)
You must be new to MMOS i guess if you think ESO is first P2P MMO to make such a promise and is actually going to fulfill it.

Exactly my point.

We'll see.
You sure as hell have the time to keep replying to other people challenging your words
I just hope they stick to it.... I have faith and confidence in the devs.
Acheron's Call not only did it, but was far superior at keeping those updates coming for years.
Haa!!
