Of course there are several things that this applies to on the realm of mmorpgs, but I don't think there is as strong of a case to be made against anything more then this: http://kotaku.com/maybe-we-cant-handle-smart-enemies-in-our-games-1542300804
We've seen it even in the games we have now. A raid boss is "too hard", the forums of that game flood with QQ, it gets nerfed. Now, I'm not saying that EVERY thing that was nerfed want necessary, sometimes devs overestimate the paramters of characters in a raid, it happens. My thing is that there's been a recent outcry for "emergent" AI....and I think this addresses the issue pretty well.

    It has already happened.

Back in WOTLK, there is a raid encounter in tier 9 that pit the player group with a group of NPCs that use no aggro table, will use healing and CCs, will target weak players (like mage first). Essentially in this encounter, the NPCs fought like a group of players.

What happened? Lots of QQing that it is too difficult and it was nerfed and never tried again.

Players don't want smart enemies .. they want ones with patterns that they can learn to beat.

    That Coliseum fight was awesome.

FFXIV uses a heavily scripted battle system as well and people still say it's too hard.  I think the relative skill of gamers these days is just lower.  People should be able to see an entire fight a few times and connect the dots to know what's going to happen.  There are people that get hung up on a fight for weeks at a time, even when they finally get it but they have to rely on 7 other people to do their jobs right and that's where it falls apart.
