"I saw none of Final Fantasy XIV's joy in the form, none of Guild Wars 2's energy and personality, none of The Secret World's willingness to experiment with both story and mechanics"
When i saw that toward the end of the review, I realized that me and this persons opinions are clearly different when it comes to gaming. I'm not saying that ESO will the most awesome game ever but i think it will be a solid game but to say there's joy in FFXIV and energy and personality in GW2 just shows me that the reviewer and I are just on different pages lol
Don`t agree with everything but yes this beta used their newest build(says so in the beta mail + closed beta testers have confirmed it) and it was a disaster so he is right to raise a red flag.
This is shaping up to be another AOC and that game was pretty much Dead on Arrival and it never recovered after the disaster launch. Normally they would delay, but the game was delayed already so no chance of that.
If their newest build(their words) was this bad in the starter area where there have been a few betas and bugs have been reported imagine how things are later on in the game where they only had the 200 closed beta testers... so yes ARS is right to warn everyone and raise red flags considering what we all experienced this weekend.
I love gaming journalism. That guy who is some type of freelancer is the game guy that loved Defiance out of all games. If you like Defiance you opinion means nothing to me.
Why do we have a 2nd thread linking this same article and why of the ridiculous amounts of ESO beta reviews does this one matter any more than those others to get it's own thread?
As I said in the other thread - it sounds like yet another person claiming they wanted an Elder Scrolls MMO when what they really wanted was Skyrim Online without the MMO elements. I agree about the bugs though.

The thing is if you played in beta this last weekend... you know it was a disaster.
You can skip whatever else he says but the beta that was using their "newest build"(ZENIMAX says so in the beta mail) was a disaster, i relogged dozens of times trying to do the quests, no luck... and there were always 20-30 people there in every instance i was put in all with the same problems.
If this was a 3 month build i`d say "ok maybe they fixed it by now" but their Closed Beta testers confirmed the build we got this weekend was the same as theirs and with only like 10 working days between the beta and launch you can see why it raises concerns... nobody wants a MMO where you can`t do quests if there are people around especially considering that with the Mega Server technology you will ALWAYS have people around.
EDIT: I expect more reviews like this because it was a buggy mess and no reviewer can say anything else... and the more pressure ZENIMAX gets the bigger the chances they do another 24h beta or something right before early access to show people they fixed the issue and that the game is playable, otherwise i fear many will cancel(a lot in my guild have and are waiting to see if they fix it if not they will still buy it, but after 3-6 months) and the game might be Dead on Arrival. No recent MMO has recovered from a disaster launch...
I'm going with Force Strategy Gaming.. his "review" so far is exactly my opinion. From start to finish. I'm optimistic to find my new home in Tamriel. Can't wait for launch.
It is HIS opinion. I played the beta and felt the EXACT same way as the reviewer - there is no connection to the game. It is an FPS combat system in an MMO (which is odd).
I feel ESO could have been SO MUCH more than a game a on rails - they failed compared to other ES games I played. They didn't draw me in and they didn't capture me, they turned me off.
The writers comments about the lack of sandbox nature in ESO is obviously his own opinion but his comments relating to performance and stability of the actual game would seem to hold true.
This close to release, my fear is that this type of article will scare of many potential new players.
Any MMORPG vet that played this build over the weekend should be skeptical of this game at this point.
I know, I know, "It's just a beta". We've heard that response so many times before in the past and it really doesn't matter when it's so close to a release date.
I read through alot of the comments and the main complaints was that it felt generic due to them comparing it to the elder scrolls franchise, that it didnt live up to these expactations.
Personally I look at TESO without comparing it to an Elder Scrolls single player game, and what you have left is a product that in many ways are superior to todays traditional mmorpgs.
Dint had much hope for ESO to begin with. Played beta and found alot of bugs - no problem these can be fixed But what shocked me the most was the start to level 10 questing line. The horrible walking and fighting animations. Cant even nuke a healer in the back who just blend in the zerg. The Imperial locked behind that paywall, uhu, in a box + sub game no less !
I had hoped it would be that cool mmo with awesome animations that pushes the genre forward, not the 1950 interface and UI...
its all mediocre and nothing realy stands out, and the nerve to slap their players in the face with that Imperial Edition......oh god i am rubbing my hands to see with will happen within 4 to 6 months from now.
Very accurate review. Perhaps the fault of Zenimax is calling their game "Elder Scrolls". They thought that they could take advantage of one of the best IPs out there, and shot themselves on the foot delivering something that is not even a far reflection of a game that many fans love and praise.
The result? An otherwise "fine" mmo is looked at as a faulty attempt at exploiting the franchise and cash-grabbing. Can't say I have any sympathy for Zenimax, either way. It was their choice, and it is their mistake.
My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

Superior? How? There is nothing superior about the combat system - is it so unattached to the player, I feel like I am in a sound proof room playing the game. The game is pretty but that is it. Once you look beneath the superficial external draping's, what you see is a game that is EXACTLY the same as every other game out there. There is NOTHING SUPERIOR about it.
The fact that you can't play one race unless you cough up more cash at the beginning is sad and says a lot bout the games publisher.
This review is just as relevant as all the other reviews posted (or quoted) on these forums. It's just as relevant as my own review, because it reflects one person's opinion about a game.
It "proves or disproves" nothing, unless you want it to.
