And the different U$, Euro and Pound amounts are bizarre... are exchange rates going to stop fluctuating from now on?

Breaks like that would not interest me in the slightest.
I recall getting like 6 months for $9.99 a month or something like that, so I ante'd up only to stop playing about 2.5 months in, but what the heck.
Yeah, that's what I did with Rift, never had played a mmo for less than a year before that, so figured it was pretty safe. I probably won't do any discount stuff till after the free month on any p2p mmos, if even then. I think Rift had a short time they were offering the 9.99 discount, so couldn't wait. Not sure if I am going to get this or not.
The game is still finding it's balance, so one month for me. I think nerfs and buffs are going to be all over the place and best to wait for the dust to settle before making any long term commitments.
