[Preview] Rift: There's Never Been A Better Time to Dive Back In

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

I got a chance to sit down with Trion Worlds at GDC 2014 to look at the upcoming changes to Rift, and I'm happy to report that their flagship MMORPG is looking better than ever.  With new souls coming out shortly and another expansion expected soon, the future for Rift is very promising.

With ESO early access in 8 days, not happening. Then there's Wildstar to try out, keeping up with Landmark, and by then dipping into SC, and by then Repopulation. Rift had its chance.

And, like I really want to go do another forced grind circle jerk Conquest map, not.

Hmmm, maybe if Trion sent me an application and a weekly check...hazy thought.

Great game, great f2p model, bad client performance...

client performance is the only reason why I don't play this everyday i'm sorry but getting 20 fps all the time or less is miserable. If only they could just do an engine revamp boom way better than an expansion

Too bad I didnt like the game at all.Dungeon, queue times are too long and the game itself is pretty boring.

ESO at the door, Wildstar, EQN coming up.. and suddenly the Trionhype features appear again on this page....someone count 1 and 1 together.

BTW: What does Trion have anyway? A game that people left in droves years ago... and thats it.

No, they also have a game people left in droves a year ago. And that upcoming pixel one.

Nobody thinks about Defiance, poor Defiance. ._.

Funny part is I like that game.

Great game, best cash shop ever and good community! I really love Rift and I will keep playing it for a very long time! It's great to be able to play whenever I want, without worrying about paying monthly sub. It is easy to take a 3 weeks break and come back. That's why I love it so much!

Been back a couple months myself... I don't like that they put t1 raid items on their cash shop but at least it's stupid expensive and not BiS. Pretty much can buy everything but the newest tier of raid gear which is pretty lame. Still one of the best f2p games imho and will keep me busy with the new souls and xpac until AA launches.  Wish they would give patrons beta access

Its not a bad game and its f2p model is pretty good but everytime I think about it the word that comes to best describe Rift is..Meh.  It's world, story and lore are, at best, bland and its combat is boring and not nearly as fluid as say, WoW.  I wish them well but it's just not a game I care for.

    This.

Rift problem is and I think will always be the extremely poor performance graphics engine. That crap is not optimised at all!

PS: And no, I dont have a crappy computer!

I wish them luck. Now you will all have to excuse me. I need to get back to staring at this countdown timer for ESO's early access. Open, open, open, open.

I see a lot of people talking about graphic issues in the comment, but I have to say it's the first time I've ever heard about it. I'm running on a intel dual-core 3GHz  with an ATI Radeon 4800 Se (1 GB memory) and I'm running on Windows XP. The only issue I have with this setup are the CGI  cutscenes that are apparently not compatible with my card, so the videos gets really ugly, but otherwise the game runs very smoothly even with a massive amount of players due to rift invasions.

Rift was fun at launch and I sometimes revisit but every time I do I don't last long as I've done it all before. You can continue to add souls, dungeons and raids but it's all the same with a different skin.

Clocked over 800 hours in Rift. Great Raiding. Fix the client performance and i'm back. But as said so often...not gonna play this at 20 FPS anymore.

    Yawn.

This is a problem in all MMORPGs... Most people who complain anyways (With all due respect to you) are players who refuse to play other roles and are just DPS players. With Rift a big problem are people that are a class that can do multiple roles (For example, Cleric can heal and tank) but are too stubborn to change spec when the situation asks for it.

I have no tolerance for people who complain about long queue's or not having enough healers/tanks in their parties. As of now in Rift, if you are a mage, or a cleric and are complaining about no heals but YOU don't want to change a spec for just ONE dungeon or ONE PvP game that needs it, then blame yourself.

For me, if i'm landing in PvP games with no heals, I change my soul to a healer until I can more healers start playing so I can change back to DPS. It's that simple. It may not be AS fun as just DPS, but sometimes you gotta do it. I'd rather tolerate healing than be too stubborn to go heals and not get in a dungeon or continuously lose in PvP warfronts.

That's what's great about Rift. With 2.7, people will have NO excuse for dungeon queue's or even PvP match ups. If there are no healers/tanks, and you are tired of not having them, then change your spec and handle it. If you don't, then blame yourself for your bickering and your constant wanting to just be DPS crazy.

IMO, Rift is still the best f2p on the market in terms of an all around MMORPG experience without any strings attatched. Sure WoW, ESO, and Wildstar will probably take over, however these are pay2play games, so if people still want to continue with F2P, Rift is still updating their content. I'm happy with that.

I seriously have a AVERAGE PC in terms of gaming PCs (4 gigs of ram, a radeon 6850 HD graphics) and at medium i'm running a solid 30-40 fps) I don't understand people having problems. If your computer is worse than mine, you need to upgrade. That simple. Hell I have to upgrade and I can still play.

I que dungeons with heals and dps selected and get instant que pops...as dps. And if it pops heals I hit leave and que again. Keep doing that you will get instant que and dps trust me

I love Rift but the guys are right. They need to fix the client, make it to run smooth.

Another huge problem is the grind gear in pvp. It really sucks.

But i love Rift anyways, its in my history.

I hate seeing people list off all the new games they're going to play as a reason to not play rift. " I'm too busy being a sheeple to play that old game, but maybe once I figure out they're just the same old crap I'll give it a try." doesn't sound like the most flattering reason to me.

It's great that they are bringing PvP features to dimensions, but it would be much better if they worked on actually providing core features to dimensions to make them actually worth going to.  Currently it's mostly build once and put it up for people to like it.   Things like crafting stations, shared storage, more interactive items like chairs you can actually sit in, doors you can open etc...  A lot of that is pretty fundamental stuff that I would think they would want to get in there before adding more big features to it.  The only reason it bothers me so much is because there is so much potential there and it is one of my favorite "housing" features in any game, but it is tough to actually call it housing when there is next to no reason to ever go back once you have it set up how you like it.

Yeah, it really pisses me off too when people play their classes the way they want.  They should change how they want to play to compensate for poor game design.

I bet you yell at clerics in PvP for playing DPS.

If there is one thing I can say for RIFT it's that they do have some epic boss battles.  I haven't played since shortly after The Dendrome was released but man was there some incredible zone invasions and awesome raid bosses in that zone.  In all the game actually.

I have a similarly old setup and I've never had a problem either. Maybe the 'pros' have to turn everything up to the max all the time, then like to complain? :P
