I see a lot of people out here in cyberspace talkin a lot about this here game 'Wildstar'
I feel a lot of you failed to notice a simple detail about this game, it is made as a satire of MMOs.
As soon as the announcer said 'Holy shit cupcake, you leveled up!' to me for hitting level 2, it hit me like a ton of bricks and I started enjoying myself. Every quest every bit of this game feels more interesting and fun when you realize... It's a satire of the thing we all love most.
MMOs.
What do you think now?
Have any opinions on why you think it is or isn't?
Comments
I don't know if it is a satire or not but i do know that game doesn't take itself seriously at all. Which is a good thing because we already have too many serious / dark / grim themed MMOS on market.
If this game doesn't put a smile on your face while playing then something is seriously wrong with you man!!!
Because i can.
I'm Hopeful For Every Game, Until the Fan Boys Attack My Games. Then the Knives Come Out.
Logic every gamers worst enemy.
While I don't like every one of their armor designs, some of them are cool, some of them are clearly inspired by WoW armor sets, intentionally so.
I can appreciate their designs without actually finding them personally aesthetically pleasing, which is the case for a few of these.
Yes, kill 10 rats, just because, is real satire of MMOs.
So your theory is that they made their game intentionally bland and put very little effort in it just as a satire of MMOs just so you can say to yourself "aww man, yeah MMO quests are soooooo bad, but its OK in WS, because, you know, its satire of MMOs"?
Really?
A kill quest is part of having an RPG, that is part of being an RPG.
No, they didn't use RPG staples because it's a satire game, they wrote the quest text and the dialogue and the setting to be a satire on MMOs.
If that confuses you I'd be more than happy to give more examples than the one I already gave.
I believe the gear designs will get better as time goes, we will see I guess. These are devs from WoW so why are people acting surprised they look similar?

i dont really think you comprehend what youre saying.
Making bad things worse doesnt make it a satire.
Its like introducing even larger scale corruption over already large scale corruption and calling it satire, as that makes it "OK". While some perverse souls might find that funny most people will NOT find it funny or entertaining in any way.
Happens to me every time I double-jump with my Aurin.
When I play another game i seem to try a double jump... never freakin works

I'm afraid you didn't read a word I typed out, so I won't bother replying any further, just know that we agree to disagree fundamentally, and in every way. Thank you.
I love being an Aurin, I can't wait :-p
I am a bit sad they can only be 3 classes, I hope there is an ex pack like cata for this game (in that they allow more races more class choices) at some point so that I can roll more Aurin :-D
Yes, lets ignore the facts. Thats always the best solution it seems.
I had fun once, it was terrible.
You are saying 'it's not a satire because it's hamfistedly making jokes and it's making a crappier mmo experience and then trying to pass it of as a satire'
You are unwilling to say anything except 'it's bad it's crap'. You are refusing to see it from anyone elses point of view.
If Wildstar was the game you were claiming it wouldn't have a kill 10 rat's quest, it would have a kill 100 rat's quest and it would take longer and be harder to complete 'merely because it's satire'.
That however, is not the reality, you are refusing to meet on even terms and discuss things from an objective view point.
The discussion is moot.
You missed the point completely. Its not THEM who call it a satire, its YOU calling it a satire in attempt to justify awful designs.
After I finished with the WildStar beta this weekend. I logged into Guild Wars 2 and tried to double jump. Realized I could not. Then immediately logged out.

Yes, because pushing a button twice is so much more awesome than just once. It brings so much to the game...."OMG i have to push a button TWICE it makes this game best game evah and much better than that other game where you need to push it only once"
Double jump is nice gimmick....that wears off at first quest you are required to use it. I prefer substance over gimmick.
Opinions pretended to be facts can indeed be ignored.
Well, thats one point I dont really like about WS. It tries so hard to be funny, that it hurts.
And the problem is also, it is not my humor. I prefer it more subtle Coen-Style, not goofy Adam Sandler-Style.
But lets wait and see what it brings in the end.
Hodor!
It is certainly refreshing Just the minor things make all the difference. I was certainly having fun through most of the game play. Not to mention exercising my creative out let with the sand box housing. Some thing to do other than questing and grinding the same thing over and over.
Tried logging back into Guild Wars 2. Remembered the "housing" there was little more than a collection of gimmicky, gathering nodes. Logged immediately back out.

One could easily argue that WS have far more style and substance than, oh I don't know, say another big IP mmorpg that is due to release next week.
Now that game is an example of tired design imo, whilst WS seems fairly fresh with a bit of a mix up on a few tried and tested mmorpg staples. It seems fun, it has a lot going on around you and plenty to explore which is all I want from a themepark grinder.
When I look at WS compared that other game due to release next week, it's the other game that comes accross as drab, souless and cynical....
