EDIT: Personally I think the persons committing this act should have their knee caps broken. Or maybe their wrists, so they cant use a computer. It is just plain sickening.

Reason i stopped playing EvE is because it attracts a very special type of bottom feeders and scum.

The worst part of it is that CCP is not doing anything with the excuse that it's within the games rules. These people know very well that they can get away with anything and CCP does nothing about it. It's sad and CCP enables these people.

Sad, because the game is pretty fun.

Not defending this type of behavior but OP breaking kneecaps classifies as torture as well and speaking as someone who's played EVE for longer than you seem to have known about it: Everyone in EVE that falls for a scam has it coming because everyone around you, even some in Jita chat, warn you: What is too good to be true IS too good to be true in EVE.

Fully agree with you. This is exactly why I quit eve. I repeatedly reported people who threw racial slurs left and right and absolutely nothing was done about them. CCP is quite horrible at this.

yeah seriously anyone who falls for stuff like this deserves to get ripped off for being that stupid. While in the article the scammer is obviously some moronic idiot , if players were not so greedy this wouldnt happen now would it? You got these type of players in every game and you cannot blame a community of a video game for having some idiots who love to scam. If you think this is bad maybe you should go look up some of the bullying and issues in wow for example. Games with large playerbases are always going to attract good and bad players alike and the larger the game , the larger your chances are to run into the filth in this world. There is much more vile and evil things going on in this world , this is just immature pricks having fun at the expense of some idiot.
  • ButeoRegalisButeoRegalis Member UncommonPosts: 594

I'm not entirely sure this is limited to EVE. I don't see anything in here that couldn't happen in any other game, mostly because the worst of the stuff happens OUTSIDE the game.

That aside, I thought EVE's pride and joy comes from its sandbox nature, and IRL despicable acts like theft and treachery are wildly applauded in game? If you create a system without bounds and limits how could you possibly be surprised and abhorred by this behavior?

Have you never been to high school??

I am an Eve player myself and I'm ashamed of people like that. It's smply disgusting. On the bright side, there aren't many people like him, not that I've found at least. I really hope CCP does something against this, it really goes beyond the bullshit people love to call "emergent gameplay" as an excuse to grief others.

1st off. Nobody, no matter how dumb they act, "deserves" to be victimized. People need to beware, that is common sense. When soeone fails to apply this, they are opening the door to trouble, but it does not excuse the actions of another who perptrates the actions. Because then where does it stop? It's as the OP said and was corrected, the person does not "deserve" to have their kneecaps broken. The victim was a fool. But the only ones who "deserve" anything (in the line of legal recourse, not kneecapping) are the douche bags who commit these acts and CCP for allowing them to. CCP is probably the biggest "Douche bag" out there.

The guy seems like a dick, but do people really fall for that?  I mean, he put ALL his net worth on the line for what? some guy saying he could get you "free money"?

I don't mean to sound insensitive but, who falls for that, in EVE or the real world?  Better the player lost all his isk than gave his bank account number to a Nigerian prince.

I obviously only have this one article as a reference point but I really don't feel too bad for the victim.  This seems to be a good example of greed making someone do what 99% of the population could only consider "insane".

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Listening to it.  Read the article. If indeed this is as bad as the article states... This would be the sort of thing CCP should take action against. I'm all for lawless in game ect. But completely destroying someone mentally no matter the reason isn't acceptable. I'll reserve judgement until after I have heard the recording in full. He just started reading and nothings happened yet but being corrected a few times.

1st edit:  43 mins in. He definitely knows he's been scammed but no doubt in denial that he's lost his stuff.  Which allows them to talk him back in. Nothing all that bad but they know at this point he has work and they got a good reaction out of him. Set him off for your recording and let him go.

2nd edit 1:19 still not that bad. It's a douche bag thing to do to take advantage of someone in denial for so long. But nothing all that bad even yet. They were fucking with him through the whole reading process to mess up his reading. In turn he had to look more crap up.  I have a feeling though the tension is just building in him. He knows he's fucked. He knew it at 43 minutes. They should have popped him then, imo no doubt would have gotten a worthy reaction.  Still listening.

3rd. 1:46 Smart enough to know to have him keep real life stuff about him out of it. When they asked him to tell them about himself he started to get personal. He eventually pops.   They could have got this reaction in far less amount of time and there's some mental shit going on here. I don't know if it's at the level the article states but it's pretty twisted.

Final: Should he have walked away early on. However that's a hard thing to do at this point I'd imagine. There's always that "What if I go through all this and they pity me." Or whatever. That's the reason they've been able to keep him the whole time.  He knows it's a scam he knew inside the first hour. He's not gullible at this point. He was in denial / hopeful.  He was for taking part to begin with but definitely not during this recording.  They didn't have to drag it out this long. There's some twisted shit going on here at some level but I don't know that it's as bad as that article states.

Dude was crying. That was hard.  His wife got involved and she's clearly upset almost crying herself. These guys kept the act up.  Worst part is the way he's talking they could talk him back him and they would too. They keep trying. It's just to far at 1:52.  I'm done.  Don't know what CCP should do anything. I also don't know that I agree with the article. I think when him and the wife both started crying and raging that was just to much. What she was saying was stupid but man the emotions.. Whatever.

Sending away one's entire list of assets to someone is probably the dumbest thing I've seen in gaming. If someone falls for that I'm not going to have pity for them being scammed. Eve is famous for 'scams', but in reality there has been like 3 scams that actually had an effect in this game over the past 10 years, the rest being nothing but preying on people's massive ignorance that are as elaborate "give me money, I give you twice back" or "give me your weapon, I enchant it for you".

However, the whole mental harassment that came after it is simply disgusting and unethical, and is only going to give a bad name to the community.

Saying it's not a big deal is also a slippery slope.  There have been people killed in real life over game disputes, but if you look at it, it's actually not a big deal compared to the holocaust and 9/11. For something that happened over a game, it was a big deal, and really gives a bad impression of the community to the outside world.

I shocked, incensed, appalled, mortified and shamed by the behavior of this scammer and his followers as representatives of the human race. We should all be ashamed.

But I'm not.  The scammer no more represents the EVE community than I do, we're all just members of a fairly open virtual world and just like in real life, I've observed great good as well as great evil.

Make no mistake, EVE is not "just a game", it really is a virtual world where CCP does it's best to keep their hands off of what the player base does.  There are benefits and costs from this policy, and they are not always easy to bear.

As for this incident, reprehensible for sure, but if CCP steps in to stop it, where does their jurisdiction end?  Do they stop at this one isk doubling scam?  Or do they go after all isk doubling scams?  What are the limits and boundries?  How much pain, loss etc does the victim have to suffer to make it worthy of an intervention?

What sort of scams qualify?  I accidently bought a mispriced Badger II that should have cost 675K ISk and I ended up paying 675M Isk?  Should I be compensated?  Should the scammer be punished?  When does the punishment end?

You take the good with the bad.  What happened to this person is not right, but then much of what happens in life isn't right, you learn to deal with it, protect you and your loved ones from it, and at the end of day, life goes on. (even in RL< as well as EVE)

Sure, go ahead and appeal to CCP to take action, that's everyone's right, but don't be surprised if they decide to stay hands off, and while that might be a reflection on their character, it has nothing to really do with the overall EVE "community" as a whole either.

It's simple. Every TOS has a clasuse somewhere saying that the game company has the right to ban someone for whatever they feel like, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people would agree that the community would be better off witouth people like this guy

If news like this leaks out to the press that CCP loves so much, I'm pretty sure they'd drop their neutral view on it quite quickly.

Erotica 1 is always posting scams in Jita local. I haven't played Eve in 6 months but I know that name off my blocklist. I do have to say they did educate the player on many vocabulary terms. After a while, they trained the guy to automatically look up words he did not know. He submitted to the abuse over space cash. No way in hell would I give all my earnings to some scrub in local known for scamming. Sheep sometimes get ate by wolves. He could have disconnected at any time but chose to chase his greed. He learned a very valuable life lesson though the scammers are bottomfeeders.

    Its Eve.........let it go
Its the only mmo where you can set your own rules and scam the shit out of people.
Plenty of carebear mmo's out there that offer some sort of safe harbor where bad stuff dont happen.

The best story's always come from Eve Online be it negative or breaking records, CCP makes it happen and their playerbase makes it happen.
Does it suck to lose everything ? yes it does....but so is the nature of the beast.
Never ever trust anyone....not even the guy you spend playing 5 years with as you lose evrything you have in a blink of an eye.

Wish there were more mmo's like this as it seems CCP still monopoly after a decade !

Pvp in general is just a really bad negative on a game community.

IMO the entire populace if not so attached to their meaningless virtual assets should have quit CCP when they caught an employee cheating.

That right there is grounds that CCP can NEVER be trusted. You can't have an employee cheat then say,oh ya we got rid of him, nobody even knows if that is true.Fact is your game should not allow employees to cheat,it ruins the integrity of the entire game.I would bet 99% their employees still cheat.

Eve is a brilliant game, but it's pve Is really a side note and has no long term beyond generating an income for pvp. Bottom line, eve is for predators.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

He did face consequences (kicked out of csm) for what he did at the time, and they were only lifted because he publicly came foward and apologized for it. Such is not the case here.

It's not up to you or us to decide when it stops. That's CCP's job and if they value their PR so much they should start doing something about it.

-learned to do defensive PVP and kicked some arse-

Bottom line is actually play the game properly before commenting on something because 0.0 ain't the only "endgame" in EVE.

Yup. If ever CCP had a reason to ban someone it was The Mittani. His offences were clear and many of them ingame.

CCP's jurisdiction ends when they leave game and talk over TS. What happens in the game during this is strange, yes, but nothing out of the ordinary nor banable.

If I get overly racist in an ingame channel while I play I am eligible for a ban. If I do the same in an IRC channel while playing the game I am not. This is faily simple logic.

These idiots are despicable, but not CCP's problem, or rather CCP can only jusdge them on their ingame actions, and in this case it is within the games limits.

You go to a bank (or any business) to do what you need or want to do there, and if some one is there begging or trying to scam, or just harassing you and the business does not address the issue, you find somewhere else to do your business, I no longer play EVE.

Love the game, the graphics, the theme, the freedom, but not the players that only play the game to disrupt others, if it was only one I could try to avoid that worthless individual, but when they swarm in growing numbers invisible to the devs that want to sell me on this game?, I consider the Devs just a guilty, therefor the game is worthless to me as I am to the game.
