Looking for suggestions for a Battle Mage

BelgaraathBelgaraath Member UncommonPosts: 3,204

So I continue to struggle with what I want to do with my character. I'm currently level 11 1/2 :-), am a Breton Dragon Night, with most of my points going into the Draconic Power Line for AOE and CC and the the Destruction Staff. So far, I've been putting 2/3rd of my points into Magica and 1/3 into health. None in Stamina. I'm not sure I'm enjoying the build so far because I'm struggling with what order to even cast my abilities lol.

Anyway, I'm trying to think ahead to what I want to do when I get the weapon swap. I was really torn between a bow for longer range abilities since most of my spells are shorter range, a healing staff to be a healer (which I've never done, but I thought maybe something new as there are one or two Dragon Knight abilities for healing), or maybe go more for the Battle Mage with a focus on either dual wielding or a one hand and shield with a continued focus on AOE and CC with some DPS but a heavier survivability. The problem is that if I go the One handed sword route, I have lower stamina for those abilities. I wanted to focus on a 1/2 split between heavy armor and light armor for protection and magica but that still doesn't resolve the stamina issue if I go that route.

1) If I do go the Battle Mage route, what role am I primarily? Tank? DPS?

2) Any suggestions for my confusion above? Advice as far as my direction?

3) How would you split the skill points between Health, Magica, and Stamina going forward knowing what I've already done and knowing at some point I can respec?

4) What suggestions do you have for the assignment of skills points?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :-). I was trying to enjoy solo play (PVE), but also want to be wanted for group dungeons and the like, and maybe eventually do some PVP on the side too, but that is not my primary goal.

Thanks :-)

I'm doing sword and board/bow combo. It leans heavily to the DPS side. Though, I will be able to tank in a pinch.

My guild mate is doing the sword and board/resto staff combo. He is going full tank and healer.

It all depends on the actives and passives you choose. You might want to look at http://tamrielfoundry.com/forum/classes/sorcerer-class/ for some inspiration.

I haven't gotten to high level but what I have done so far is get the first skill in Dark Magic, Daedra Summoning, Storm Calling, 1h/Shield, and Bow and put them all on my skill bar. Yes, I'm gimping myself slightly by only having 4 abilities to use at one time, but I'm leveling them all simultaneously. That way, when I hit 15 and have two skill bars, I can buy the actives I actually want for my builds.

Thank you. I'm confused. Why do you not have a 5th skill when you can level that simultaneously as well? Just to save skill points for level 15?

I haven't bought any new skills because I haven't fully decided what skills I'm going to use yet for the two builds. I'm still researching that myself. So, until I decide, I figure it's best to not spend a point on something I'm not going to use. So, I dumped some into passives and a couple into crafting.

Draconic. Ahhhh. I think Im worry too much about being useful as a tank or healer since most look for those instead of playing what I prefer which is DPS. I think Im going to stop worrying about it and just be a Dragon Night with Draconic Power Line and Fire Staff for AOE DPS CC stuff and my 2nd weapon being a BOW for more long range combination of spells and just mix and match medium and light armor lol.

That does sound like fun. After consulting with my guild, Ive decided on DPS support for tank class. Dragon Knight Fire Staff and at level 15 dual wield with focus on Heavy Armor with skill points in Magica 66% Health 33% :-). Ill see how that goes.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy the build! By the way, I totally misread your post earlier. Don't know why I thought you were going Sorc.  So, sorry about that.
