Sorry but there is no magic level in ESO or any other MMO.

If a MMO doesn't grab some one from get go chances are it never will. Forcing yourself to play through something will only frustrate that person more.

This is veritable bull. In fact MOST mmo's actually do have a magic number where it actually becomes fun and interesting. Simply due to the fact that most games start with very few features and as you level up you get more and more, and sometimes, the game starts off way to slow to but once you unlock a certain feature or gameplay then it's the beesnees.

That aside, if the player has 0 patience then yea if the MMO doesn't grab them from the get go chances are it never will because they will be actively searching for reasons to hate the game.

I agree with the other guy.

Only veritable bull is when people tell bored people 'hey get to level X you will see game gets lot better'... duh!! no it doesn't.

This is why starting levels are very important but still not a guarantee that later on you will enjoy the game..because there is no 'magical' level where a game becomes more fun.

Yes you get more skills and you get higher level quests and better loot...but that would hardly matter to the person who got bored in first 10 levels of the game.

This game is very story driven (imho).  If you like story and lore then I would say this game is for you.  If you want action and lots of hacking and slashing, not so much, except maybe in Cyrodiil.  There's lots of action in Cyrodiil, and it never stops :)  I would say by level 15 if you haven't found something you like to do, then you're probably not going to.  At level 15 you get weapon swapping, which can make things a lot more interesting.  Instead of just chaining 3-4 moves together, with weapon swapping, can switch back and forth and make yourself very unique.

Agree with this about 80%. I prefer the Daggerfall Covenant slightly over Aldmeri Dominion, and actually despise Ebonheart Pact as very poorly set up for enjoyable gameplay.

I've tried all four classes -- tried three different DK builds and hate all of them -- find sorceror okay, but nothing special, really enjoy Templar and like NightBlade (with Siphoning).  Find PvP highly lacking; on populated campaigns you've got zerg-instant death-respawn- run for twnty minutes to get back to the fight-rinse and repeat; on low populated campaigns you've got "Where is everybody?" followed by crickets in chat.  I suspect there are about eight too many campaigns given the number of real players in PvP...

Anyway, there's more hype than substance to this game.

This is just wrong. MMOs are exactly the type of games that pick up slowly. They won't give everything they've got at level 1-5 lol. At level 10 PvP opens up so that might appeal to the OP, at level 15 you get two weapons which allows you to have more skills. The main story starts to pick at around level 8-10 and it's becoming interesting. The OP already paid for the game, I don't see why he shouldn't give the game a real chance.

I gotta ask, for all of you that think the combat in ESO is terrible -- which game has "good" combat, in your opinions? Personally, I have mixed feelings about the combat in ESO because I've never been all that into the "deck building" thing and also because I feel they could have put more reactionary stuff in it to make each fight more interesting. At the same time, I don't really see what so many of you find monumentally wrong with it either. I'm playing a 2h melee NB, and I've never felt like there wasn't enough impact from my attacks (maybe in beta, but it seems to have been improved considerably.) That goes for skills as well. I also like that there's at least a few cues to watch out for and react to, which is more than you can say for many mmorpgs out there.

So again, what is it about the combat that you all seem to dislike so much, and which game would you consider to be at the pinnacle of "good" combat?

Exactly. Even big daddy WoW takes a considerable amount of time before you get enough skills that your character's play style (depending on class/spec) starts to solidify. Back in the vanilla days, it wasn't until around level 30 before most of the classes I played started to become interesting. From the little I played recently -- even after all the updates -- it doesn't seem to have changed much in that respect. Compared to that, ESO is actually relatively quick at making you feel that your character is rounding out and becoming something.

Most of these games have always been driven by perpetual progression, and that's pretty much how it's always been. You start with nothing, you slowly gain something, and eventually you come to a more "completed" state with your character. To anyone that has a problem with this, I'd advise giving some serious thought to switching genres.

OP.  If the game didn't grab you and the combat turns you off and you have no hope for it, I'd suggest getting out now.  Just get a return on your payment if possible or close your account and stop the bleeding.  There's no point in being miserable and then trying to make as many people possible miserable with you.

ESO has a lot of things wrong with it, but I actually like the game so far.  I'll pass judgement at the end of the included month.

The combat isn't meant to be fast hack and slash, you have to time your strikes with animation but I do feel it is a bit slow as well (it's especially bad for people with 2 handed weapons).  Also the skill lag/lag will completely ruin combat (and the fun) too.  Hopefully this will get corrected.  If not I could see myself not subscribing. If you don't like it now or can't see the potential.  You never will.

There are A LOT of copy and paste jobs in this game unfortunately.  From characters and voices to dungeons.  They all look the same after a couple hours.  It's a little disenfranchising but I'm hoping that later on things switch up as you progress (thought I don't have much hope for NPCs not all looking the same).  Maybe they do this to keep the game running decent.  I don't know.

Public events and world bosses are cake walks.  They need to scale them up by population.  The "rifts" are usually a race to tag mobs before they get burned down.  I don't know what they were expecting but clearly they didn't think it through.  They maybe thought groups of 5 would be there at a time.

There is no AH, and the Guild AH is a meager alternative. It promotes being sociable but the Guild AH sucks.  It's not just comprehensive to use. There's no search option.  The item sorting and filtering is terrible and it's buggy.  Hopefully they will fix this.

There are so many annoying and progress blocking bugs that require constant relogging, restarting, or just praying Zenimax has a sense or urgency to fix things.  It's sad that people have to go back to a Level 12 dungeon when they're 25+ and STILL can't complete it.  Again this is something that can be rectified.

The UI is absurd.  When developers make console-ish GUI and ram them in to PC games, it makes me want to physically discipline the people who make the decisions.  THE UI is dumb.  It's not menu driven as most PC gamers are used to.  You'll be fumbling around to do the simplest tasks. When are these guys going to learn that console and PC ARE NOT THE SAME.  They need 2 different solutions.

Gold Spam... oh Gold Spam.  THIS, I will quit over.  There's nothing worse than having to deal with chat spam and mail spam in an mmorpg.  I refuse to tolerate this in a game asking for subscription money.  No way.

With all the negatives I give props where props are do.  The game is somehow fun to play.  I actually LIKE running dungeons and doing content with people.  I liked doing PVP, and I'm looking forward to Adventure Zones/end game.  That is if they fix the things I mentioned.

    TL;DR

If you're an ornery MMORPG veteran used to industry standards (the proven stuff that works) you're going to get pissed at ESO. There are A LOT of rookie missteps.  It doesn't break any new ground. It doesn't really improve the genre either. Stay away from the game and don't ruin it for people who are jaded like you.

If you're a little more understanding and casual, ESO is a fun game.  Zenimax will either fix what needs to be fixed, or folks will move on to the next. Play it and quit with you can't bother anymore.

Man that sucks to be you, but at least you can feel good about making the ESO haters happy. You gave them the PERFECT discussion to bash it like crazy. No it won't magically get better for you if you don't like it so far, personally I love the combat and can't get enough especially in PvP. I'm constantly just killing things for no reason other than for fun, not for a quest or anything. And the quests have been great too, even the low level ones. I had a level 7 quest that involved helping a woman hiding in a necropolis find her love who had tragically died recently because she couldn't take not having him. After a few tasks, I ended up finding his tomb and talking to his spirit...and his wife's spirit too. It turns out he was a sadist who was just screwing with her, pretending to be in love just for fun. I was then given the choice to tell her what exactly the asswipe was doing, or lie and say he was still madly in love with her, or that I didn't find him at all. I figured the best choice was to be honest so she could stop obsessing over him. Not surprisingly she was really upset but I figured she would be better off in the long run, so I claimed my reward and moved on. A ways up the road I saw a ghost next to the road that I thought was a player who had died and was afk or something. I was able to talk to it though, it turned out to be the quest-giver, she ended up killing herself because she couldn't take the pain of losing him again. That started out like an insignificant low level quest, but ended up being very clever and entertaining. The game is awesome, but it just isn't for you, it's a shame too, the game has a bright future and they just announced the first adventure zone, Craglorn, and it looks insane.

well if you didnt liked the game play with its dull animations and the lack of immersion, if you go on higher level (10-12 which i have reached in the beta/demo weekend) yes you have done a mistake.
