Thoughts of a long time MMO player.

I must admit, first impressions upon logging into ESO were not very good. As was to be expected (in some weird, long-standing sort of tradition) the combat in ESO is not very good at all, and - in my opinion - pales in comparison to some other more recent action MMO's such as Neverwinter and TERA. Having said that, and as strange as it may sound, the combat doesn't bother me that much as I was more or less expecting it to be in and around the same level of immersion as previous TES games.

One thing I have not seen people talk about much though is the musical score. Sweet divine, as cringe worth the pun, it is music to my ears. The last MMO's I played with a score anywhere near as enchanting were Lineage 2 and FFXI. It is an astounding companion as you traverse the lands of Tamriel and an item of the game that pleases me greatly, so it does. I would imagine it's a component of modern gaming pretty far down on the list for most people but good music makes a game for me. Always has, always will.

And the exploration... So far I am loving not casting my beady eyes towards an xp bar or 'check listing' quests as I travel throughout zones. I am simply just doing what I do in most TES games, and that is wander about to my hearts content. I'm usually a fairly staunch advocate of story being nonsensical in MMOs but somehow - due to the strength of the lore - I find myself engulfed in the quests fo ESO, and as per the usual, there are some very interesting quests in the world of Tamriel which make for great canvases in portraying the worlds issues and inhabitants.

If I were to cast some advice in the direction of an 'on the bench' candidate I would simply say two things. First of all, ESO is largely considered for existing fans, if you've never played an TES game before and are used to a more high fantasy setting then ESO might not tick all the boxes for you. You won't be waltzing about with 8ft broadswords that glow green and have lightening and spectral bears oozing from it's hilt.

Secondly, if you do decide to give ESO a go, don't play it in a mindset of being in a traditional MMO - play it like an TES game and you'll reap much more from it's design.  I really do pity those guys who have bansihed the content day one in a race to cap, or at least, I hope they give the game a go proper and re-roll a character to experience all the hard work that went into creating the world of Tamriel.

So far, so good! ;)

It seems you're describing a single player game :)

Also.. I disagree about the music score. LOTRO, GW2, Wildstar and more.. all have very good Soundtracks.

This is ESO's main strength and weakness.

It feels like Morrowind or Skyrim here and there but after people have devoured the content its game over pretty much.

Can Zenimax pull out new Morrowinds and Skyrims out of their pockets when people are getting bored ? since even Bethesda cant do that for Skyrim.

So, did ESO have a successful launch? Yes, yes it did.By Ryan Getchell on April 02, 2014.

Well I guess it's up to individual to 'consume' the content as they see fit. Personally it would take me months and months at the rate I'm going. :)

Good thing for Zenimax you're paying each month.
