Years of development, and nothing to show? No beta, no alpha, no f&f, no trade show demos? I would guess this was a poorly managed project that could not stay focused and could not keep a stable design in place.
Would be interesting to know why they decided not to proceed, the details I mean, what wasn't really working, technical issues, or did they just not have the money to carry it forward?

Bummer. I wouldn't have purchased WoD since I don't like horror games, but having a non-fantasy MMORPG get canceled is sad since there are so few of them when compared to the number of medieval fantasy setting games. I wish the employees who lost their jobs well and hope they find new employment soon.
Well this means that they are going to rely on Eve as their only breadwinner. Nothing else they have done has achieved any success.
The problem with that line of thinking is that the game's ruleset is flawed by allowing many situations that allow bullies to thrive. This in turn causes the majority of new players to quit. I would be willing to bet this game has one of the highest turnovers for new players of any other MMO.
Big mistake, while Eve do have many fans the game is already 11 years old. A new game like this had the potential to both bring in the CCP fans and the WOD fans and could have become something huge.
Too bad, it was one of a very few games in development that had a big potential without just doing what everyone does. I guess my hope is on Undead labs now.
Another sandbox bites the dust even before release.
EQN is all i got now for a AAA sandbox experince.
EQN is not a sandbox, it has restrictive classes and class specific equipment. That alone makes it a themepark, no matter what Smedley wants to call it.
Originally posted by brihtwulf Haven't they been working on this title for over 5 years now? How were they not closer to some kind of beta testing? I'm curious what the decision behind this is. Is CCP losing money overall? Do they feel the game isn't marketable in the highly over-saturated MMO market? Regardless, it's sad news. The industry needs more variety.
Dust 514 flopped pretty bad and I guess they didn't want to risk their company by making a huge investment on a risky sandbox and decided to cut their losses instead.
^This. I think Dust 514 flopping really had an impact on their decision to close down World of Darkness. Im really sad, like most others on here, this was the only MMO coming out that i had hopes for.
Actually i take that back. Im holding out hope for Camelot Unchained.
I'm guessing CCP found that EVE works as a sandbox because of the sci-fi space setting. Trying to translate that into a setting that requires much more graphical design without admitting that fact was pretty bold (or stupid). With the constant setbacks and sheer lack of publicity this game suffered, I'm just surprised that it took this long to become official.
Unfortunately, I see EQN, not as a sandbox but a "Build-Your-Own" Theme Park.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but I think SWG is probably the best foundation (conceptually) for what a sandbox should be.
Wasn't Ultima Online the Ultimate Sandbox? Housing, Open World, Crafting, Not quest driven, skills obtained through usage, FFA PVP
Both those games were great games of their times with some drawbacks but neither was really Ultimate.
For one thing were both games pretty niched (but then so were most other MMOs at that time).
Sandbox have way more potential and could be many things, just look on single player sandboxes like GTA, Minecraft, Skyrim and CIV: Cavemen2Cosmos.
Sandboxes really only needs to have one thing in common: player created content. And you really could use that for many different kinds of MMOs with their own unique flair. Far too many people just look on UO & SWG and assume that sandboxes must be like that.
Of course, they did have many great ideas and I wouldn't mind a game with for example SWGs crafting but my point is that there is limitless possibilities and we need to see a lot more sandboxes before we can call anything "ultimate".

What I don't get about the whole Dust thing is how they ever expected it to work out in the first place. Who decided that it was a good idea to create a game that ties in directly to an MMO, but release it only on a single console during the same year that the next gen consoles are coming out?
Either they took way too long to develop the game, and were unfortunate victims of the new console release cycle, or they simply weren't thinking straight. Either way, someone screwed up pretty big.

I don't think anyone knows the answer to that. It was a real wtf moment for people waiting to play the game.
I can't help but feel this goes all the way back to monoclegate a few years ago. It was obvious then that they needed more funds to expand in the manner they wanted to (WOD, WIS, etc..), with EVE being their only real income source they wanted to monetize it more, they let their audience control their business plans in the end, and here we are today. I don't think it's all coincidental.

I don't really get invested in games possibly coming out and this is why. People get all bummed out by things like this and it's just not worth my time to worry about a game that may or may not come out.
This is why we should STOP relying on Kickstarter to fund games.
"Huh?" you say...
Lets just imagine for a second that a team that had made millions of dupes pay up front for a dream project that sounded great on paper (I mean, this DID sound awsome on paper) and jsut realised that they where not able to do the dream justice.
Could they back out gracefully like CCP jsut did and great devs like Blizzard and others have done multiple times?
Of course they cant. They would have to deliver a stinking turd clearly carrying the smell of a development team who gave up on it way before the finish line.

I'd have preferred them to release the game in a buggy state and work on fixing it after release rather than just quit. If the game is just irrideemably bad I guess they had no choice but just giving up on something still sucks. Especially with the fact they wasted a lot of money on that turd Dust and Valkyrie they could have used on WoD and EVE.
As far as Kickstarter there's always a risk that a project won't be made or will suck. Anyone who backs things on KS without taking that into account is an idiot.
It makes me wonder "what the heck were they doing all this time".
Exactly! and all the talk that "no it wasn't about money, they just couldn't make what they wanted to", nah sorry not buying that. $oE famously went back to the drawing board with what they're working on now, if these people didn't like how it was turning out at some point they could have -stopped- and said ok this isn't good, let's change this, re-do, re-work, whatever. I'm not impressed with the giving them a pat on the back like they did some great thing here. No they failed is what they did, and massively. They were "working" on this for years, and had so many people so hopeful... Inexcusable failure.

Not good when a non fantasy MMO dies.
Bah, it's too bad they wasted their time with Dust 512.
This was about one billion times more interesting than that.

Perhaps CCP should stop pretending that they are capable of anything other than Eve.
Just cancel Valkyrie now and save the fans the heart ache.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
