whats with the patching and reconnecting when servers come back up?

so the servers were down today for i guess a patch or something...so when servers came back up i logged on my sons account it patched in like 2min. now hes playing ..and i have a better PC than him...on my PC ..its like im redownloading the whole game again and im still waiting for the patcher to finish..no im not behind any firewalls or virus programs messing with it..anyone have any clue wth is going on? is there something in settings i need to do? i know yesterday they had a patch or something and i pressed repaire and it worked fine..whats the deal?
