If they had both F2P and sub I would keep sudding as long as they designed it so that the megaserver separated the F2P people from the people subscribing.
How do you account for WoW? considered the worst community around. I hear EVE has a horrible community as well but I never dealt with it so wouldnt know, again subscription.
Look at LOTRO. One of the best communities I have seen. It just depends what type of people flock to games.

Lotro has a community? There has to be a whole 1000 people left in that game.
Any graphical, audio, or gameplay restrictions not seen in other mmos but found in FFXIV can be blamed on one thing. PS3
Based on the extraordinary amount of hate this game has going for it, even if ESO were to go F2P, why would you play it? If the forums and reviews are to be believed, you are looking at a boring, half-single player, half-mmo, bad combat, poor graphics, no content, quest grinder.
Not counting bugs, because we'll assume bugs are fixed by F2P time.
It sounds horrible, and if I believed a game to be everything that people claim ESO to be, I would never touch it. My time is too valuable to spend playing a game this bad.
So would you play F2P ESO and why?
It may be hard to believe, but a lot of people are actually enjoying ESO, despite what you may think from reading forums.
well they said the same for swtor and it become F2P, it don't matter if people are or not playing, if they think they can buck more money going f2p they will do so.
to answers the OP, arche age will be here when eso decide to go f2p, so I don't see a reason to play eso again, the betas was enough, the lvling pace was ok, that much I give then, it was not like swtor then one weekend I hit lvl 38.
maybe after 2 years if I had anything else to play I could test it for a month or 2 like I did with swtor then move on
In most cases yes this is true but I think in this case ESO will only go F2P as a very last resort, most mmo's out there do not have a reputation to uphold like Elder Scrolls does. I think the success or failure of this game will have a big impact on their future games.
ESO is not another Elder Scrolls game, its a totally different genre, but most people do not see this so it will affect their future plans to buy another Elder Scrolls game.
I'm kind of thinking this game is sink or swim, no F2P option. Better to go out all together than to create another mediocre F2P MMO.
Although I have no idea what they are planning so who really knows I just hope they are thinking about the future of the series.
Because SWTOR wasnt too big to fail? KOTOR is rated as one of the best RPG games ever made. They have the Star Wars name, only the biggest name to ever be. They closed another MMO just so it wouldnt compete with each other.
You think TES is bigger than that?
Good point, you're right. I didn't think of SWTOR.

This is a misconception from bad games, I have played F2P games with great communities. Everquest 1 and 2, GW2 has some great communities on the 2 servers I played on. Most communities dont start till the game has been out for more then a year. Most MMO hoppers go from new MMO to new MMO never getting to so the community form.
The whole megaserver thing ensures this game will never feature anything resembling a community, non-factor.

I actually feel the opposite. I think the Megaserver and campaigns foster huge communities, I have had more social interaction and community building experiences in one month of ESO than I had in 3 months of playing Rift recently.
Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV Have played: You name it If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.

LOTRO has more players than ESO does right now. Thats all the matters.

I think Viper is wrong for another reason. In most MMOs you make a bad name for yourself you just jump servers and start over. Here your name is your rep. Mess that up and you need to open a new account.
I myself have played most MMOs & think ESO is a very good game, the combat although needs work on animations & responsive actions is still better than the old tab taget attack system. Graphics would have to be some of the best in a MMO & the game plays very well with large numbers of people on screen.
Questing is also a strength of the game, they are varied & engaging.
Bugs are always going be a major part of a game when starting out, most people that complain probably spent little game time or just hate they made ES series into a mmo.

That's actually a very good point as well. You can't just be a turd to other people and get away with it in ESO, your name is all you have, and it sticks with you without other servers to transfer to.

Yes, I would. Why? For the same reason I take the free samples at the grocery store; they're free and I want to see if I like them. It's just that simple.

Yes. Even if a game is horrible..if it is free you don't lose anything but time trying it....

Time is the most valuable resource you'll ever have during your life. You should never waste it on things you don't like (except when you're being compensated for your time, aka job).
So even if something is free from financial obligation that doesn't make it worth trying.

Originally posted by fruitgame Id play it if it went Buy to Play, but the current state of the game, imo doesn't warrant a monthly sub
And I'm pretty sure that if it did go B2P the stuff they would release would be so shallow and meaningless that I wouldn't continue to sub to it. I want a ongoing evolving story with new things to look at monthly not quarterly DLC packs that take 5-6 hours to burn though with some new mechanic thrown in designed to extend the grind and get people to keep visiting the included cash shop to buy all the new dress up props added that week.
Have to see how it plays out, im subbing now, if it ever goes FTP I would prolly quit, we will know better once the fly bys are gone after the first 30 days.
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
I would have even less reason to play if it went FTP, i hate FTP. As it stands right now, id not play ESO as a PtP as well tho,.. and id even go as far as not to play it if they would pay me.
MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.
Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?

Do people who say they will try it if it goes F2P mean:
What you are asking is
F2P
or
B2P
those terms are already made.
Real F2P makes money only from a cash shop. B2P is buy the game and no sub and again often a cash shop.
