I always run into games that I try to force myself into liking because it has a single feature that I really enjoy. I end up falling out of love with the game when I realize it lacks the other things that make a MMORPG decent for me. I have yet to find a game that is able to put it all together for me.
I never sat down and asked myself what I actually wanted from an MMORPG. Drawing on some things I liked from other games here is what I'd like from a MMORPG.
Setting:
- Present/Modern to future, dealing with occult, conspiracy and supernatural things similar to The Secret World. I'd also dig a game based on a world similar to the Dune storyline.
Art Style:
- A hybrid between realism and stylized artwork like Black Desert but not seizure inducing.
World:
- Open World with minimal instancing like Archeage
- No instant travel
- Fast Travel should still be actual travel. I remember liking this in Aion, and TERA (not the teleporting).
- Instanced group dungeons
- Instanced Raiding
- Public dungeons
- Public Raiding
Combat:
- Full action, with weight to the characters & enemies, and boss encounters similar to Dark Souls 2.
- Timed attack presses in combos that grants a chance to crit similar to Phantasy Star Online (the original version)
- Ultimate attack meter like Elder Scrolls Online, or other games
- 2 Weapon Swap system containing 5-6 skill bar per weapon like ESO and GW2
- Blocking that drains stamina like ESO
- Skill Synergy, but better than what ESO or GW2 have done.
- Encounters will require some taunting, healing, and position control.
- Larger encounters will have problem solving elements like The Secret World and Fractals in GW2
Trinity:
- Soft trinity where no one is perma locked into a single role, and groups can create their own synergy like ESO
Character Progression:
- No numbered levels like The Secret World
- Attribute points, with HP, Dexterity, Stamina, and Magic
Skill Progression:
- Skills have to be found and earned like Guild Wars
- Skills should level through use like Phantasy Star Universe, ESO and others with better visuals as you progress
- Skills can be morphed down varying paths like ESO (with deeper options)
- Passives and passive synergy system like The Secret World
- There should be a wealth of skills to pick from like The Secret World
Gear Progression:
- Visual appearance and stats are separate like The Secret World
Questing:
- Main Story Line that can be followed at your own pace at any time like TSW.
- Dynamic events like Rift and Guild Wars 2 that change the setting depending on outcomes
- I love the various quest styles of The Secret World (investigations, puzzles, having to pay attention to surroundings).
- No direct quest markers on the map just general areas
Economy, Crafting, Housing, Jobs and other Extracurricular Activities:
Social System + PVP:
- I like how Aion & Archeage have separate factions with a middle territory they fight over (where it's no holds barred)
- The Archeage system is great as well for how they handle players + crime and death
- I like how GW2 has separated organized PVP for people to be competitive
- Mentor system like Aion
Little things I'd like that I haven't experienced yet:
- I'd like the danger factor to be ramped up so players need a buddy or small group to venture out of safe zones
This is my ideal MMORPG. What's yours?

I was pretty torn up about the news regarding WoD as well
The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)
