So MMORPG is your choice in news. You see the articles all the time. I find it interesting that no where on this site has anyone noted the complete and utter clusterfunk the pre-order name grab is.
First, servers came up a couple hours late.
Second, servers swamped by 20K+ people at the same time.
Third, said page was HEAVILY scripted and large images. The SCRIPT they used for name reservation polled the SAME SERVER 3 TIMES (the overloaded one). So if you got through step 1 (logging in) you might not get to step 2 (reservation) and if you so happened to get through THOSE then when you clicked submit to your name in step 3, it would POLL it again. Over and over.
Next, after hours of doing this RELOAD over and over and over... the name you reserved may or may not have been reserved as the option to reserve previously reserved names/guilds was allowed and MANY people "lost" in some form their names reserved hours before.
Finally, they took the registration down entirely. Apologizing profusely.
Why is this not a news article? Certainly has ALL the needed aspects for it... and it's fairly big news. ESPECIALLY since the pre-order specifically says name reservation if pre-ordered before May-whatever. Low-n-behold people who's names were "reserved" may or may not be "reserved". Who's to know?
It should be HIGHLY discussed, if nothing else.

Really don't see a need to be "angry". It's the first time I've seen any company do this outside of a game itself so of course there will be issues. Secondly, there are still 2 to 3 weeks left before launch, plenty of time to iron out the bugs on this and get people in to reserve their names.
Honestly, I didn't mind it being down yesterday as I had to work and really, through all the years, I've only lost a few of my main stay names and I just went and made a new one or 2 or just varied the spelling a bit. Nothing to get upset over, at all. Far too many other important things in life to get upset about than this.
I was one of the people trying to register their name. I did so successfully.
Carbine came out on the first crash and admitted they weren't prepared.
They also posted a follow-up on their forum:
"JG: Major tech issues appear to be resolved at the moment, but this has been changing in real times - multiple times previously as we were mid-post saying "things look better" they'd take a turn, or if we were finally bringing things down, they'd get better. Quite frustrating for all, and part of what's made communication difficult.
ETAs: Overnight tech guys are continuing to examine and monitor the issues. Tomorrow after sleep we'll do a postmortem and figure out what went wrong (there is a LOT of conflicting information).
We'll broadcast what the plans are as soon as possible. We don't expect there to be a need to reset, but we don't have full information; you'll know as soon as we do.
We'll compensate to the best of our ability in a fair fashion for folks who missed out on a name (or really folks affected in general) in as rational a fashion as tech and fairness allows. The details will need to be fleshed out before we communicate so we don't make a misstep on that; there are lots of moving parts.
No, this is not part of a planned website stress test.
And, to be clear, I certainly apologize for the issues - a complete pain for all concerned."
..Cake..
This drama is more of a community thing and the devs/community team has been trying to keep folks posted. I got my names, and so did most people I know but it was a pain in the arse, to be sure and I'm sure the Carbs all learned something.
The MMO folks at large are more interested in riveting topics like "Why can't my Warrior equip other weapons beside 2h sword".
As far as the topic at hand, I assume folks will get a free character and guild name change to help address the snafu w/ the website.
Oh, by the way - it wasn't the graphics or page design that was the issue - it was the Austin log-in servers that puked.
So, OP, name reservation thing is a "Major issue" now? Seriously?
So, OP, name reservation thing is a "Major issue" now? Seriously?
The original name reserve servers came up on time at 11 PDT. If you think they were late you probably didn't account for the change in time between you and Carbine.
Also the servers were pretty much DDOS'd by fans using scripts to try and reserve names. With 75% of the load coming from these users.
It sucked and not much can be done about it. A reset would likely be even worse because even more users upset about losing a name would run these scripts. It also wouldn't be fair to users who where able to claim their name early on to lose that name and have to come back another day, possibly on a day they already have plans. It also punishes the users that spent 5-6 hours waiting to claim a name by making them potentially do it again.
A complete scraping of the name reserve would be upsetting for pretty much everyone involved.
A free name change for users that pre-ordered at the 14 day mark when the name will become usable again and give them a good chance at the name they wanted. It would be even better if pre-order's got a first chance at those names by opening them to users with the pre-order first and to the rest of the public at day 15.
It is Carbine's first game and mistakes are going to happen. A lot of players in my guild were upset by it me included. Life moves on.
While normally I love to hate... but since I'm not trying to register a name... and it's like weeks till launch... having a hard time caring... maybe I need to get some sleep to refresh my normal vitriolic hatred.
It is if you're guild wants THEIR name. (and I know a few people who griefed some larger guild names because they thought it'd be funny)
Or you want something specific. Rather than Ikeda203947
More importantly, this is basic coding 101 on their website. Because it was all scripted, it was hidden from the average person. (people who don't F12 to find hidden scripts) Subsequently they reload the page over and over. Each page had a HUGE amount of images/scripts on it adding to it because for each one to run they had to ping out to another server. This is compounded with paging the same server 3 times through the course of registration. That's a bit overkill on one poor server.
Hell Carbine, mostly, did the right thing in this instance. My only real gripe with their communication is that the FORUM should have been updated first, THEN Twitter, THEN Reddit. Most people I know avoid Reddit and Twitter and, frankly, the community forums are THE PLACE for that discussion to happen.
I'm not saying it's unusual. I'm not saying that it's not normal. But it IS news and should be discussed.
P.S. You can name call and call me a hater, but I'm still buying the box. Same reason I bought ESO (and didn't sub). I love MMO's. I love what they (used) to be and hold hope that they'll be awesome again in the future. I get pissy because Dev's do half-assed coding that anyone from a mile away could see the issues with.
I don't care name-reservation. I will buy the game after release.
They made only one mistake. If the feature were available from beginn of pre-order-avaialbility this would not be of any concen. They opend the floodgates and the flood overwhelmed them. No suprise
i agree w you - that was a complaint prelaunch with Arenanet too

I don't see any Hate (fans' automatic dismissal of any criticism about "their game" as being "haters hating" notwithstanding). What I see is the OP pointing out that something Carbine attempted to do with the game kinda blew up and created a number of issues. They're wondering why it wasn't covered by mmorpg.com.
DeniZg's oversimplification of the OP's remarks is a classic, text-book example of someone being willfully dishonest in order to protect "their game". OP discusses several issues around the name reservation system. DeniZg ingores all that and immediately creates a strawman to attack instead.
Textbook hyper-protective fanboy behavior. It always goes the same way.
When a fanboy sees someone pointing out problems with "their game", some variation of the following inevitably follows:
Step 1: Call the person criticizing the game a "Hater". That'll show 'em. Because after all, any criticism, what-so-ever, of a game "you" like is automatically "hate". There's no other option. You either like the game and have nothing bad to say about it, or you're a hater. That's it. No room for gray area.
Step 2: Construct a strawman to tear down by misrepresenting or ignoring what was actually said.
Step 3: Repeat as necessary until convinced that nothing that filthy stinking "hater" said could possibly be true about "your game". "Your game" is beautiful and perfect and special... It must be, because "you" wouldn't play a bad game.
Sometimes there's an additional step, we'll call it '2b', and it goes something like this:
2b. Attempt to dismiss issues with "your game" by proudly stating how "it's a lot better than "-insert other game here-". This serves either of two purposes. A) It makes your game seem better simply by not being "as bad as that other game". It diverts attention away from the issues with "your game" and, ideally, makes the discussion about "that other game". Also, if you can't think of any legitimate issues with "that other game", or don't know any specific details... no problem.. just make something up. Who cares about accuracy anyway? As long as you're making it sound worse than "your game", it's all good.
I swear, you could print a hand-book on it at this point and it would apply to any and every MMO released. It's the same thing. Every time.

Out of proportion to what exactly?
Was originally planned to start at 11 AM PST, was pushed to 1PM PST. Servers were then swamped. At first people didn't even know WHY the buttons weren't working. I started at 4PM EST and I did not manage to be "lucky" enough to get my name until 8pm. THEN, I find out from a guild buddy there are rumors that your name wasn't locked in after all (they did an update around 6-7pm EST on the fly). When you opened the window, rather than your name being confirmed (or on a countdown), it was a blank box for both name and guild to reserve/save your name all over again.
So yet ANOTHER hour spent trying to get in and "re-lock" in my chosen name. AGAIN.
And yes, I was a bit peeved at 9 pm when I wrote the original question (because I immediately came here after the lack of information on their forums... sue me... I'd think that SOMEONE on MMORPG might be in on the knowledge).
ESTABLISHED guilds want their names. People want their names. Having a unique name that is unique throughout the servers world-wide is a BIG DEAL. It's not like fighting someone for a name in the U.S. or just in the EU. It's fighting EVERYONE WORLD WIDE for that name (be it personal or guild). And I watched enough last night to know people are going to troll guild names just to do so.. and it's ridiculous. In this day and age we have the technology in place to avoid "name" gold-rushes. It's kind of silly.
No. You just skipped straight to step 2 - misrepresenting what was actually said and constructing a strawman.
Example 1: Misconstruing what was actually said: The OP isn't blowing the issue way out of proportion. He's describing the situation in detail, explaining exactly what happened.
Example 2: Constructing a strawman: The OP says nothing about the issues being "downfalls of the game and Carbine". They're acknowledging something that's a significant problem with the game's launch/pre-launch and are curious why it's not getting more coverage here, given the reaction to it, via a couple links he provided. And in fairness, MMORPG.com has covered issues other launching MMOs have had, so his question is a valid one.
You are, in fact, the one blowing the OP's post out of proportion and assigning your own, rather paranoid, significance to it.
Not sure whether to thank you for providing a perfect example of precisely what you just replied to, or say "I told you so" because you proved what I posted correct.
Either way... Thanks for playing!
Obviously nobody at carbine had the foresight or the intellectual capacity to stop this before it happened.
they should have.
Just like Zenimax stopped people from logging into other people's accounts right?
..Cake..
OP's title is "MMORPG.com Missing Major Issues" and is discussing "major" issues of name reservations.
So, who is blowing things out of proportions again?
And, how am I oversimplyfing OP's remarks by asking OP how come that name reservations are a "major issue"? Please do tell.
The name reservation as a "major issue" may be a bit inflated, but in general the OP has a very valid point.
For a very long time I notice that mmorpg.com is constantly "missing" issues with popular titles. There have been many similar things happening in other titles which this site never picked up. It is pretty much part of their one-sided, pro-industry agenda people lately started to rage about.
It was the same when Funcom temporarily took over this page and mmorpg went all into AoC hype, but NEVER had a single word over the big mess ups and outright lies from Funcom. Same with Rift when mmorpg.com went into full Trion-mode (in which they still are to an extend) -you did not see an article that i.e. Trion sold 12 month subs 2 weeks prior going F2P, the "trial server" lie or about Trion's other sudden 180° turns contrary to what they said before. Especially back then in Funcom's case people got banned LEFT AND RIGHT from the forums for pointing out the facts.
Atm it is the same with Zenimax. You never saw "news" on this site about the random rollbacks, masses of wrongfully banned players, charged credit cards on account setup, EU servers still missing -and you never will.
This website doesn't work like that and everyone knows it. They always take it easy on their "friends in the industry", unless it is an indy-studio.
What we get though is frequent "look people, it's not so bad"-features from freelance-authors whenever people rightfully rage over a hot topic on the forums. You can easily find 6 or 7 occasions on which this happened lately.
This is a major issue?
It is an issue for sure...one that Carbine is ironing out....but is this gamebreaking? Me thinks not.
Lets not forget we are still playing video games here.
I agree. Too much hype here and not enough impartial views (call it criticism) from the authors.
For example, there are things that bother me with Wildstar, which I know of, but won't be mentioned in the articles (no alternative leveling zones from lvl 20 till cap, crappy deafult UI, boring starting zones, unimaginative AMP system etc.)
But forums have plenty of info if you're looking for it. If you manage to dig it up under pile of "major issues" such as name reservations, that is.
I wouldn't really call it news that the name reserve is having issues... now if the headstart is as rocky as ESO's, we'll be posting updates on that.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.
My Review Manifesto
Follow me on Twitter if you dare.
This website is already teeming with cherry picked criticism...do you really want more of it?
Time and time again, people ignore the complete package of a game but rather just rate it on one or two issues that they have deemed the most important.
I believe the staff here usually (USUALLY) provides moderate and objective reports, much more then their divided audience. I appreciate the coverage the staff provides and I wouldn't have it any other way.
