This point actually came up in another thread recently where someone rightly pointed out that there is no point in long term rep gathering (lets say 3-6 months) as the reward was likely to be out of date and replaced with raid gear, and you have to ask - did Blizzard realise this was the road they were going down?
The solution is to drastically slow down the amount of gear rewards you get so upgrades are much slower and harder to get - and therefore bring long term goals back in to play (think aq40 quest lines, tbc main quest line) But I think this will never happen - blizzard have trapped themselves by teaching their players to expect rewards quickly and almost on demand.
Do you think they will ever bring long term goals back into the game again, or is WOW now simply the home for the quick reward?

Ye that's the problem, Profits > all and until a game comes out that can compete (Wildstar maybe) they wont change their behaviour. Wow is in danger of becoming a MMOAction not a MMORPG (or is it too late!)
