just started two days ago so here we go...
1) I found out how to make the missions non group...are the open areas always group or can you solo or small group them without respawns like Diablo?
2) Does gold serve a purpose besides crafting?

Certain areas in the story are Public, and you can't avoid seeing other players. You'll also see unlimited respawns in them. They do change shape and where dungeons/side dungeons and paths to other maps change. Most story areas where there's a waypoint are public, with some exceptions. usually the last boss area in each chapter is private, and most indoor missions are private.
Gold is just for buying items for characters, and paying for crafter and enchanter changes to your gear. Oh, and it gets used when you re-roll your Legendary Quest. Gold caps at 3 million, if you're anywhere above 500k you're in good shape.
