VR getting even more excited

  • The way I see it, current VR is best for games where you're in a stationary position with a first-person perspective. Like a starfighter pilot or a race driver. The illusion will be less immersive in a game where you walk around, and not really worth it in games like Civilization or Plants vs Zombies. I would probably find it annoying watching movies as we know them know with a VR headset compared to on a TV. It doesn't really add anything to that experience, other than making it harder to find your popcorn. Movies aren't interactive nor are they shot from the visual perspective of the protagonist.

Answers to some concerns in this thread

-yes, its literally a screen 1" away instead of 12" away. If this was 1950 we might not have much information on the affects of screens on the eyes but as it is we have tons of people (like me) have spent the majority of their waking life over the past 20+ years looking at a screen. Now granted that is not the same as 1" away but I dont plan to wear the device for 20 years * 8 hours a day either.

-For the most part VR game designers understand people are not going to use the device for 8 hour stretches which is why I would assume solutions where you do not wear the device duing ALL the game play but rather some of it. Having said that, I have DK1 and its light enough that it doesnt cause much on the neck. In fact. I in some cases the keyboard is more stressful then it is. Additioanlly, the final version is planned to be much lighter.

-Its not a fucking fashion device. The only people who are going to see you with that thing on your head are people who are not playing the game!

I may be in the minority but i care about VR about as much as i care about 3D.  Not very much.

I think here at MMORPG you are not the minoriy. I think however for those in the industry you are the minority. By that I mean anywhere Oculus team goes they have the longest lines of any other show floor.

Also as I have said before I think equating Oculus with 3D is to not understand VR. its very different experience

This is the type of thread that bothers me.  Not the subject but the OP.

Sean, it is great that you LOVE the VR as much as you do but your insistent need to convince everyone that it is the next biggest thing since breathing is downright infuriating.

Sean, please remember, not everyone likes everything.  Something you like does not mean that someone else is going to like it.  So stop trying to convince everyone who doesn't show your love for the Rift.

Now for my take...I will not be getting it.  Tried one, didn't like it.  Like by HD TV better (Sean DO NOT try to convince me).

Sure, people will buy it... just like they will spend $150 to get early alpha access to a game that is slated to be free to play.  Doesn't mean it's ever going to be mainstream.

The negative of this device far outweighs any potential positive.  For every person you find who would like this product, you can find 100 that don't.  It's a gimmick, and it will stay a gimmick.  Not everyone embraced the Wii or Kinect either.  Gimmicks.

I definitely agree with this especially regarding 3d,blu ray not so much. I'm glad they are working on the tech and trying to bring it mainstream but good luck with that. It's really not gonna have any effect on anything i play anytime soon, other people it will tho.The average person would care more if they came across it in amusement park vs actually purchasing it for there home.It just isnt practical at this time for everyone, but i'm sure that will change in time.

I am just trying to point out things that are false based on peoples assumptions.

Like 3D TV. VR is not at all like the experience of 3D. its very different and people keep comparing the two.

people keep saying the monitor is going to hurt their eyes yet they look at a monitor all day every day.

I dont mind people not caring about VR, I just want them to be a little bit more realistic about some facts

unless it controls the 5 senses then to me it wont ever be true vr. It just looks like a screen right next to your eyes and thats not really appealing to me.

i thought that as well.. but till you actually experience it you have no clue how immersive it can really make a game..

I understand VR and i understand that it's a different experience to 3D.  Both are still gimmicks to me in the realm of MMO's.

Perhaps it's because i absolutely hate first person view which VR basically is to another level.

I can see the fascination with VR as far as shooters and space sims go, but for the genre that i enjoy, i have little interest in it.

hopefully the Occulus ( and project Morpheus) become a huge success so devs start making First Person games for those devices and leave the rest as Third Person for those of us who prefer that. First Person kills every bit of my immersion in any game world if i have to play with a mouse or a gamepad. Leave the floating weapon gameplay to the VR guys to reinforce their immersion.

I have to point out some things here.

    1. Screen actually don't ruin a persons eyes. It can cause strain and give a person headaches, but your eyes readjust when you stop. In other words, it doesn't cause any permanent damage, like so many people think. That is actually one of those over blown myths because people noticed those who sit in front of monitors all day and stair at it closely end up wearing glasses. However, the reason they where sitting so close is because they needed glasses to begin with. After many studies they have not found any proof at all that starring at a screen harms yours eye sight in any way. Same goes with sitting in a lit room or dark room with a screen.

    2. I am all for a complete VR experience as well, that simulates all 5 senses, however I am not going to deny a VR experience that is only sight. I find it laughable that some of you would only play VR if it was "complete." Yet you play video games on a flat screen monitor as if it's any better. You are essentially taking 1 step backwards. Heck, you would be missing out on a great experience due to your stubbornness simply because to you it isn't "complete." Just because it doesn't have all 5 senses doesn't mean it isn't fun or immersive.

    3. This whole "true" VR is crap. There isn't any "true" VR. ANYTHING that simulates reality in a virtual environment is technically VR.

    4. VR is not even close to being the same as 3D televisions. Personally I hated the 3D glasses gimmick. Leave that stuff in theaters. At home, we don't need stupid crap popping out of our screen. Sure .. it's cool until you get bored of it and turn it off lol.

VR however is essentially the whole idea of feeling like your in the game. Immersion takes on a whole new meaning when we talk about VR. If you think that is some sort of a gimmick ... then you are delusional. Video games essentially was based on the whole foundation that one day we could be in-side the games and become part of a whole new world that we created. Video games have always been leading up to this. There honestly is no where else for them to go. Or do you honestly think screens and monitors is the tech of the future for video games .. forever? Please ... since when did technology ever just stop and stay 100% exactly the same? Never!

    5. What they have now for a headset isn't even close to what they are shooting for. The consumer release is suppose to be loads better. If you think it will not get better, then again you are delusional. Of course improvements will come. I would be fairly concerned if a company was working on this stuff for years and they didn't improve anything in that amount of time lol. Actually I don't think that has ever happened when it comes to technology. Everything improves over time.

The issue here is to many of you have 0 clue on how great a VR experience is. I can just imagine some of you being one of those grumpy old people harping on the kids how back in your day you played on screens and how it was such a better experience. It's the type of thing that happens when you begin to think everything is a gimmick.

Of course I have no doubt in my mind that a lot of you only say that now. Once it's complete .. I bet all those who thought it was a gimmick will be using it as well. I mean who wouldn't want to experience being in a different world lol?

I equate my demo experience with the Rift as perhaps the best gaming experience I have ever had in my 20 years of gaming.. It truly is one of those things you need to experience yourself to truly appreciate it.

Unlike some games like ESO where some players play it and do not like it. I am not aware of anyone who has tried the Oculus and said 'Meh' and its not like the people reporting experiences all work for the same agenda

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
