After almost 3 years away from mmorpg's i decided to give ESO a shot so i bought it. My main time in mmorpg gaming was in wow but ive tried and played all these years some otherr mmorpg's too (eq2,ddo,lotro,aoc) so ill try to be as much objective as i can.
First of all one of the things i value most in an mmo is the combat system. In my opinion it defines IF a game has present ,and a future. No matter what u do in an mmorpg quests dungeons exploring raids pvp u spend the vast majority of your tme by doing exactly this...fighting.. One of the reasons i bought the game was that i heard and read from guys that played and wrote their impressions afterwards that the combat is like skyrims. Shame on them ~!
Combat of Skyrim has almost nothing to do with ESO's combat. And u can notice that very easilly after killing a single npc. Those that may played Skyrim as an archer and trieed eso as an archer can understand what im saying. In Eso playing an archer reminds playing a hunter in wow only with worst arrows trajectories and animations .Its a continuance of pew pew add a speciall ability 2-3 times beetwen casual arrows firing. That sucks cause i was expecting archery to require aiming give height to arrows when aiming long distance targets. The aiming is false manual here. If u aim somewhere around the mob it hits.
Animations are a very improtant part of aa succesfulll combat sustem. If it is fluid andf feels realistic adds a lot to a game's combat system. In ESO this is not the case. Both Skyrim and wow are much better in their own ways in this department. ESO suffers from the same sickness Lotro Ddo eq2 had.Somehow it feels clunky and unrealistic. It cuts a lot from a good fewling while u doing combat.
Mellee combat seems a bit better but still alot worse than skyrim's. I got some special attacks during leveling but the overall fewling lets u down.
Graficks: The world's design seemed great to me and quite huge.Lots of exploration to do secrtes and quests to be discovered, reasures etc etc Graphicks quality seemed ok to me for an mmo but the one thing ppl should focus on a game is gameplay. I f a gamme has great gameplay and its addictive even if the graficks are just decent u ll play it. Vice versa though aint working ;]
Bugs:Havent noticed after 3 days of playing any bugs despice of what some ppl claim.Maybe i was lucky but still.
Story: Story was nice and captivating.I enjoed the story line so far and many of the quests i did.Good job on that .Ass mmorpgs i dare say they excelled on that department.
Socialisation/players interactivity : Despice the fact there is every type of interactivity tool trade chat zone chat something is wrong here. Everyone was doing quests alone 2-3 time i spoke in say mode to passing by guys they maybe didnt even read what i said or who knows. It leaves a fewling of a solo game or maybe it was just me cant say for sure.
Overall: If u dont mind playing an mmorpg with a semi wow-ized range combat system version of something like oblivion/morrorwind (i dont dare to involve skyrim's combat on comparison) u may find it pretty and maybe stuck if u join a guild also). If u value alot combat system and have high standards like me save your money who knows maybe some of the next upcoming mmorpgs could do better on that.Who knows. For me overally its a damn pity, all this designing the world quests, story, nice grafs, to be wasted by adding a not well made combat system. I dont know if trying to make a full manual aiming system like skyrim is not possible at this time, maybe the networking programming required, servers required,is very hard to do it i dont know but still another mmo passing by .

I had a bit of a different experience, not entirely, but different that came to the about the same conclusion.
I made it to level 24 altho I had canceled at about level 12 or so. I beta-ed this thing and it seemed to me to be a CC-fest from even getting level 8 in the beta. It only got worse as time went on. Even in solo PVE, got to killing VOX, and it's nothing more than having a long term CC hit you and wait to die. That's the basic "no-go" for me in a MMORPG, death and nothing I can do about it, no counters, no heals, just clone. Tried this instance 5 times, same result with the CC-fest, uninstalled with 15 days to go on the 30 that came with the box. Reminded me of the one boss in TOR around the same level and I left TOR after paying for 1 month.
The whole thing reeked of WoW , along with a basic re-make of TOR, also. Some of the stories were decent but the combat lag and the bugs took the fun right out of that as well. The combat lag, they tried to bandaid over it, like Cryptic did, with time to "cast" junk however it's really easy to see as it takes a second or 2 just to loot at times. Their engine can not keep up.
Crafting and resources are the same as WoW altho I couldn't see much need for them. Gear/food/Glyphs/etc dropped so often that I never needed ANY crafting done what-so-ever. Bank space is always at a premium and my back was full within days of starting. No Skyrim there, they could of fixed that with SWG/Skyrim housing but it's pretty easy to see they had their development heads on another WoW clone and didn't even care all that much for what was done in Elder Scrolls, much less any other pay to play MMORPG that worked.
And as far as I can see, story is about the only thing this MMORPG has going for it, just like TOR. Just after their version of a bug-fest patch, must of been a lot of them as the patch was 10 gigs, had to reset on 2 entire main quest lines due to not be able to interact with quest items/NPCs, and got a couple of combat crashes as well.
Couldn't file a bug report. Submit was greyed out. Imagine that, a bug filing a bug report.
Played Skyrim for about 460 hours +, this ain't Skyrim. It may be a Skyrim skin, somewhat, but it sure doesn't play like it. Before launch of this game, I was actually looking forward to it, a pay to play MMO with no cash shop, so-touted Skyrim (Elder Scrolls) developers, but another MMO that went for complete and utter WoWification, quest based themepark, is just another pass in my book.
Developers, if I want to play WoW, I'll play WoW. You can't EVER keep up with Bliz or the game. It's got 10 years of post launch content to it and a dev team that is unequaled in size. A WoW clone will not work with even the WoW players due to this. Their not going to stay around and pay for 10 years waiting for you to catch up. Ev1 else, who doesn't play WoW has a reason and if all your going to do is make a clone, your sure not going to get them either.
/uninstall without ever thinking of a return.
Why necro this post?
so many things have changed in ESO in those 5 months which makes the OPs post non relevant
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
its nothing like WOW, not even remotely like WOW in style or gameplay or end game goals. The crafting has a totally different vibe, again nothing like WOW, odd claims to make. Trust me if it was like WOW I would not go near it.
When the game was in beta and even at release it was buggy, but boy things have changed since then. Ive got a modest system that's a couple years old and I have everything running at max except for shadows, and the game is simply gorgeous, and i've yet to hit a bug (i actually got a refund in the first week as i complained about the buggy quests)
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
