Just saw this thread on the Black Gold forums. I don't know what to make of it but it's a bit eye-opening.
The thread (presumably while it lasts):

I played for only about an hour and I didn;t stop because of a hairstyle.
Frankly how many different hairstyles do you think there are? I see similarities in them from numerous games, it is no big deal.
Did you follow the links to see the side-by-side comparisons? It's as if they took the texture files and simply had a design school student touch them up. They're not similar. They're the same.
Yes I did and yes they are some similarities but again, how are you really going to make hair styles different that wont look like some game?
Now if there was a lot more then just hairstyles then maybe I would be concerned but hairstyles? That doesn;t bother me in the least.
they didnt just made it similar, they took the whole pie for themselves. If there were so little hairstyles out there then every mmo would have the exact same hairstyles, which is not the case.
I remember a few F2P games that took WoW´s lvl 1 boars and added them to their starting zones even with the same death sounds..... This is the same thing. Straight copy of assets.
Some are very similar, practically identical, and some aren't that close.
With that said I don't think you can sue someone from recreating hairstyles you have in your game. If they actually ripped the models and stuff to use it in their game (as in they literally took the meshes and just put them in their game), definitely, but as it is now I doubt anything will happen.
People create mods for games (skyrim and oblivion comes to mind) that also blatantly "rip off" and sometimes just straight up steal art assets from MMOs with third part programs and virtually nothing happens to them. Not to mention other assets like weapons and clothing. If nothing is done about the countless people who steal and recreate assets from popular games/animes/whatever and make mods out of them then this shouldn't be any different.
These cookie cutter Korean games don't make all their own assets most of these guys BUY their assets from artists or asset stores, so yes you will see EXACTLY the same assets from game to game. Think about the restaurant business allot of them buy supplies from the same vendors they just mix them up into different recipes or in some case exact same recipe.
You will also see this allot with a publish that is funding different projects they will share assets between development teams.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.
When I started looking at the side by side comparisons I felt the same way as a prior poster " How many different things can you really do with hair?" They look similar but.....As I saw more side by side comparisons they looked like the same models to me with maybe a more sallow complexion or slight touch up. As a player, of course, I could care less.
As a legal matter, I don't know how this actually works. What is necessary to prove someone used your art assets? Does the judge do a side by side comparison? Did Black Gold hire workers from the other company and they took the art assets with them? How do you sue and recover damages for this type of thing?
Interesting to see what will happen.
DMKano, it is obvious that you do not like Black Gold and that is your choice.
Again some of the hairstyles are similar some not, not much can be done since there is only a limited amount of different hairstyle you can make.
I don;t believe they will get sued over it and for the other person that seems to indicate there is other "ripped off" graphics in the game I have yet to see anything.
Again, I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill, just have to find something they don't like about a game so they can throw a fit on a forum.
Anyway do as you see fit. The hairstyles are not why I am not playing (did try again the past few days couldn't get into it).
Seriously dude, you don't wanna start with Kano. Also, there's no such thing as a 'limited amount of things you can make' when it comes to ANY art of any medium. Sure, there's going to be similarities from time to time, but a ripoff is a ripoff. Not a game I'm gonna be playing either way, so I couldn't care less about lawsuits, so I'll just close with...
I've also seen a lot of the same Mohawks in several MMOs who was the original Mohawk inventor?!?
There seems to be some some confusion regarding this issues. Allow me to help everyone figure out once and for all whether or not this counts as copyright infringment.
ahem
In alpha/closed beta, the Sharingan and/or one if its variants was available as an eye color/pattern.
There, that should solve the problem...
Since when is Tuesday a direction?
