Hi all, I'm looking for a new game that my wife and I can play. She is not a gamer and only wants to play in a group of two with me. We have played 2 other mmorpg's so far and the main thing that she finds fun are the dungeons/instances. We want to be able to do these while still getting xp and good drops.
We've played 2 games in the past:
Wow: I played a Paladin Tank and also took care of the healing while she played a Mage. We were able to complete instances at the higher end of the level range and still get good xp and loot. If a dungeon was level 30-39 in the dungeon finder we'd be able to complete it around level 36-37.
Swtor: The group sizes were 4 which went nicely since each player gets a companion. I played a Jedi Knight (Tank) and she was a Jedi Mage (DPS). Both of our companions were healers and she would take over healing if they both died. We could complete the instances at 1-2 levels higher than the dungeon level.
The look of the game is also important to her (she doesn't like anime style characters or the look of some older games like LOTRO). Another minor preference is that the combat is relatively static like wow/swtor where the most you have to do is not stand in the wrong spot at the wrong time instead of having to manually block/dodge attacks.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
I should have mentioned was that my wife really likes to create and customize her own character which is why we haven't tried many of the coop rpgs and diablo-style games as most of the time there aren't many options if there are any at all

the only mmos i can think of that you can work ina group of only two people are instanced based mmos. Vindictus, C9, Rusty hearts, Dragon Nest. But they are all anime and you said your wife doesnt like anime style games. But even if those games were an option, keep in mind they are horribly limited to a city lobby and the rest of the game is the same handful of dungeons over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.
Honestly if you want a two player coop game then look for that, a coop game. Saints Row3-4, Dead Space 3, things like that.
EDIT: Guild Wars 1 is a great online coop option if both of you dont mind the little dated graphics. Still the best coop option out there when it comes to coop-ish focused mmos.
EDIT2: WoW has scenarios too, they are 3 player dungeons but i think you can enter with ony 2.
EDIT 3: Warframe is a nice coop game too. Now you can craft companion warframes to join your party so you dont need extra people if you dont want to.
EDIT 4: Sacred 2 gold (on sale now for 4 bucks on steam), Torchlight 2, both are also pretty good coop games. Sacred is more rpg than Torchlight and TL is more action/diablo ish. I prefer Sacred myself.
Sounds like you two should broaden your horizon and look into some COOP RPG games rather than MMOs.
I cannot come up with any suggestions for any MMOs that you should play if you want to play only with one other person.
My best suggestion would be Guild Wars. You can both have 3 heroes each, or add preset NPCs.
If you want do be able to do all content with 2 people that would probably be the best choice.
Atlantica Online is a great game to play in co-op but it's a lot of grind.
Outside mmo, you should go for Divinity Original Sin. It was made to play co-op.
I should have mentioned was that my wife really likes to create and customize her own character which is why we haven't tried many of the coop rpgs and diablo-style games as most of the time there aren't many options if there are any at all. Divinity Original Sin looks like it has good character creation though.
EQ2 with mercs sounds promising and I'll also check out Guild Wars 1 and Atlantica online. Thanks for these!
I know I'm looking for a pretty specific type of game which is why only WOW and Swtor have fit the bill so far. But if we can play video games for a portion of our quality time it's a win for me

If I can throw in my two cents have a look at Dungeons and Dragons Online. Each "quest" is kind of it's own mini dungeon, and they can easily be duo'ed (in a lot of instances even solo'ed), just depends on the difficulty you select when you enter it, and you get rewards for your current level. The game is heavily instanced while you are playing but it sounds like you two are going to be playing exclusively together so that shouldn't impact you too much. Also the character classes are very customizable as you can multiclass into a bunch of different things. It's F2P so you can get a feel for the game before you decide if you want to spend money (it used to be subscription based way back in the day so it's slightly higher quality than recent F2P). Some drawbacks though are the combat is a little more involved than WoW; you can roll/dodge and positioning is important. Also if she didn't like LOTRO graphics then she may not like DDO as it's similar.
I am not speaking from experience but I had heard Rift had the cool 2 person dungeons also, however when I googled the term I actually stumbled across your post here:
http://forums.riftgame.com/general-discussions/newcomers/430790-possible-complete-dungeons-only-2-players.html
So I guess that kind of shoots down the Rift suggestion
Anyway hope that helps, good luck on your search!

Get borderlands 2 with the DLC and thank me in the morning.
No but really BL2 is a fun easy game that starts out solo and two people can beat it all. My ex loved it they have enough woman touches to give most willing g/f's something to play with their bf's.
Also Diablo 3 is also fun and if you don't play on hard mode can be beat with two players also.
Tera might be worth a look considering it's free. There are solo and group versions of the dungeons. I was able to solo the group version of the first several dungeons so i think you may be able to duo them. As long as she doesn't play a tank class it shouldn't get too dodgy for her.
She might have a hard time getting over the character models though, they can be pretty racy...
My wife and I are in the same boat, it's always her and I grouped together so we play Rift....
Chronicles are smaller versions of the games dungeons that take 1-2 people to complete, and not only can you get gear from them but also Infinity Stones which can be used to by armor, weapons, upgrades, etc.
Also, with Rifts Soul system your wife can customize her character in many number of ways..
There's also activities like fishing, housing or artifact hunting if you or the Mrs. just want some down time in the game...
Best part of all is that it is F2P, Rift offers the entire game for free, the only things you may think about purchasing are things like bank slots and so forth, which can be done using the games currency instead of real money ...
Hmm, I guess with some of the f2p suggestions (like DDO and Tera) it wouldn't hurt to download them and see if she can get used the combat system. I'll give it a shot this weekend.
I've always wanted to try Borderlands but I'm not sure she can handle a first person shooter. And I'd love to get her into Diablo 3 as I enjoyed the game when it first came out but she's against using stock characters.
Wooddoctor - I posted on the Rift forums and was told that dungeons weren't doable with only 2 people. Did you ever try these when you were leveling? Chronicles look really cool but I think they start at level 50. If you are ever looking for another game to play I'd highly suggest Star Wars The Old Republic. Every instance while leveling can be done with 2 players since you get companions and it's also f2p. Having a decent class story is also great.
As an MMO suggestion, I'd actually say take a look and Star Trek Online. It ticks all the boxes you seem to want:
- You can duo through every single mission (they will scale their difficulty to match party size). In space its just the two ships, on ground, it would be the two characters and 3 additional bridge officers from the two characters.
-Lots of character customization (character, clothes, ship, bridge officers)
-The combat isn't overly action-ey. It's somewhat hard to explain, but space combat is sort of naval combat style, being that its slower, and more about positioning, rather than reflexes. And ground combat is essentially tab target, but you can go FPS style if you want. And there is a kirk-roll, but it doesn't actually do anything, other than just doing a kirk-roll (you cannot make a star trek game and not include the kirk-roll)
For a non-MMO, you might actually try Neverwinter Nights 2. It's 20 bucks for the complete pack on GOG (Base game, and 3 expansions).
-You can duo through all 4 campaigns (it will fill the rest of your party with NPC party members)
-Graphics aren't terrible. There is a decent amount of customization, mostly in getting different armor pieces and so forth.
-There's also player made modules, for when you finish out the campaigns (or before). There are even persistent worlds that people run, if you wanted to try that.
DDO is a solid game for what you're looking for. A lot of under the hood customization options (visuals are a bit limited, but not horrid). Decent f2p options, but definitely geared more towards those that spend a little. If you don't go for fluff items, the majority of the game can be unlocked with what you earn in game with enough patience. Only a handful of quests that can't be solo completed, let alone duo completed. You can create a guild of two and work towards some nice guild bonuses as well. Or, join an existing guild and reap the benefits. I'd suggest Sarlona server. And a good understanding guild for duo play is League of Extraordinary Ham.
I had fun once, it was terrible.
