Where are all the players these days?

So I have been playing the Virtual Environment circuit since back in the pre UO days.  I have played nearly all the major VE online games out there.  Something I have noticed recently is that most all the games out are dead.  Dead meaning that there are so few players logged on it is hard to enjoy the primary reason I play VE Games.  People and interaction with them.  I am currently subscribed to 3 VE games EQ (of course) Shadowbane and SWG (I caved had to see it )  and for the most part either the players are so spread out that it is tough to find them or they are just not logged in.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Now that being said I am curious where are the people these days.  Has the market become so saturated that the player base is too spread out or have people actually moved on with their lives (this is doubtful)

This may sound ridicules but I miss the days of crowded servers.  The days where west commons in EQ was packed with folks actually playing and selling instead of the mind less canned merchants found in the bazaar these days.  Before this becomes an editorial on programming the player out of the game I will stop here and open the floor up to comments.

FYI - VE Games or Virtual environment.  After reading the article below I decided that I fully agree and have adopted the term Virtual Environment.

I believe you're right,  there's so many MMORPGs that the same people can't afford to play six games.  I believe that the programmers might start making AI and having them run around like real people just to make the servers look real.

Just a thought.  I remember playing UO on the Atlantic server and not being able to play for hours because the servers where full... that was fun! :)

    *EDIT

I can remember playing UO where this guy would only sell custom made clothes,  colors, etc in Vesper and he would make a killing.  Now if you tried that you would go poor faster then you can say "ouch".

That is food for thought games aren't much fun unless you can actually play them.  I remember those days as well i played both Baja and Pacific shards though and I agree not much fun... Untill you got in.  What I guess I am searching for is that holy grail of populated but not crickets and tumble weeds.

This may be best as a poll for folks to reply to since most all the games out aside from Daoc hid their numbers for fear that folks will not log in blink blink.

I wonder sometimes if the game companies A: ever let there dev staff see the light of day and B: When they will stop letting a bunch of business major lunk heads guide the industry.  The industry could use more trash talking ego maniacs like the artist formerly known as Lord British. image

Lord British is cool!  I can remember when I was talking crap to him in the game when him and Lord Blackthron was in game...

He scorched my talking and threw me in UO jail... remember those?  Or did you ever get thrown in one? ;)

Hrmm I don't remember anything of the sort.  Sounds like it was fun though.  I remember Lord Blackthorn coming through Minoc with an entire entourage though.  That was fun to watch.  I should have talked crap then I guess it would have been fun to land in jail.

I can remember meeting people in jail... it's quiet funny.  You should sign up again and get yourself thrown in there. ;)

The players are mostly gone because there aren't any good games out recently. I remember back in the good old days where i had tons of games (diablo2,diablo2 exp, dungeon siege,ect..) But now the newer games aren't fun at all. The last game i've ever played is star wars galaxies, which besides the graphics, was a bad game.

Everyone is waiting for the promised game. I have not bought a new game since BF1942 Road to Rome, I keep waiting for a decent game, but all have been failures. PlanetSide ended up being a never ending craphole, SWG was the same just with a different concept and different graphics. Now all I can do is wait for Doom3 or HalfLife2 or WOW or Horizons or any number of other games and hope they aren't the crap factory all the others are. Perhaps the next big game will be FFXI, I mean it has been out in Japan for like a year. A lot of the bugs should be long gone and should be a nice stable launch and experience.

My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.
Why doesn't DOS ever say "EXCELLENT command or filename!"

Customer: "How fast will my COM ports go?"
Tech Support: "How hard can you throw your computer?"

It was so much fun in UO when you walk around, create stuff, and your skills were so important. Now skills are nothing. Only the rich can get them the highest. It all went downhill when gold became everything. Everyone would hunt with dragons and such. It's better to have skills raise more slowly. They have more worth.

Anyways, to make a huge ass story short, they screwed the game up and no other game will live up to my expectations of that UO I once knew. Not even the new UO coming out. In fact, I like the old UO's graphics better than the new ones. The only game I would consider joining now, is one that the developers ask the people what they want in a game.

Thanks, tell me what you think
