EQ2 has less instances than WOW -- there no public dungeons in WOW
erm.. public dungeons are still instances.
i don't think you are right .instances in mmo terms implies having various copies which only your group or raid can enter and you must join to see them in it.public means anyone can zone in and we all see each other .
An instance is typically an area (doesn't have to be a dungeon) that makes a copy of itself for each group, so unless a public dungeon creates a copy because it only allows so many in then no they are not instances. Also just because something has a loading screen does not make it an instance.
EQ2 for example has around 33 "instanced" areas that will only allow from one player up to a full group in and that's it (not counting raid zones of course).
WoW by comparison has over 70 by the same definition of allowing no more than up to a full group in.
To get back to the OP
Asheron's Call doesn't have instances as far as i can recall but it is a very outdated game now.
DAoC has 15 but again the game is a bit dated now.
Rift doesn't have too many at around 10 (pre lvl 50)
Wildstar has about the same as Rift.
Age of Conan has a little over 10.
Everything else i have played had a lot more than those listed above, that's about the best i can narrow it down to.
Age of Conan is made up of instances every zone has multiple copies of itself to spread player load.. Was one of the first big games to do this over all zones.
Sorry it took me so long to reply and thanks for all of the answers.
Zones are fine, but I think the increased amount of instancing is making it hard for me to find what I want in an MMO. It doesn't have to be 100% non-instanced as FFXI had BCNMs, CoP, etc, but I enjoy being around people most of the time and sometimes watching others is just as fun as playing.
I'm definitely going to look into every game mentioned as I'm feeling the itch to play again. Thanks again for the reply's

I almost put this in my post that I needed to check out AoC again because I had written it off after a few hours of playing for that same reason.

EQ2 did this well before AoC, in fact they aren't the only two games that have multiple copies of zones. I doubt AoC nowadays still has multiple copies of zones, usually more prominent when the game is new.

For some reason the instancing in AOC never bothered me in-fact one of my favourite themepark mmos.. would it have been better without the instances and more servers.. mabye but I found the content enjoyable to play through and did so a few times. Each instance could hold quite a few players in so it was not like you had them all to yourself or anything
AoC was not what the devs initially promised us but after they sorted some the the major bugs it turns out to be a decent themepark game and still one of the best looking MMORPGs on the market.

I dont think EQ2 did it in every zone? I think just the main city hubs the world zones were not instanced, but I could be wrong its been a long time since I played it.

Definitely happened in the world zones, the most common were the first two tiers from either side outside the cities. (Antonica, Commonlands, Nek Forest and Thundering Steppes). After those zones things started thinning out somewhat. Some of these zones from memory would be duplicated up to 5 times in the early days.
I might actually check out EQ2 again as i have station access for PS2.. so may as well download EQ2 and see if my old character still lives from like 6 years ago or whenever EQ2 came out lol..
Why are so many people in this thread misinformed about what an instance is? An instance means if you go somewhere and someone else who isn't in your group or raid goes to the same place, you won't be able to see or group with them. It could also mean that a zone has reached a certain capacity and another "instance" of the zone is created to accomodate more players. Other than the fact that you have to load into an instance, loading screens and instances have no relation to one another. WoW is a perfect example of the exact opposite of what the OP is looking for. The original Everquest is an example of a game with no instances. It had lots of loading screens sure, but no instancing whatsoever. These aren't opinions, these are facts.

zone loading and instances are 2 different things and i believe the original poster did say instances.
If so wow is very heavily instanced .
not sure what the answer is nowadays tbh.
Yes EQ2 has some public dungeons but last i played they were not popular and thus deserted.
Vanguard might be the answer but its closing soon.
Old EQ had no instances for years but think thats changed.
