There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Technically speaking they are military-themed MMORPGs. They are, after all, killing things, not for food, but for land, politics, and economics. They're organized. They carry weapons. They have classes and ranks. Military.
The closest thing right now, I would say, would be to roll a Republic Commando in SWTOR. Its a quality MMO in its current state, and the commando is a military themed story/class.
Battleground Europe, used to be called World War II Online is exactly that...a MMO covering air, ground, sea set in Western Europe during WW2. It is not a glorified LAN game like other non-massive mmo's but instead thousands of players simultaneously on the same server can be fighting it out.

Modern military? Probably not. Take your pick of any number of FPS games and play one.
Want bigger battles and permanent progression? Battlefield franchise tends to have 32v32 servers and has a rank system and weapon leveling system.
Want small maps with rewards for being good at killing players? Call of Duty has it.
Want a simulation game? America's Army or ARMA might be your style.
Military-based online games are more lobby-based, as they really are a lot more fun with even teams. Here's a link to several

Heroes and Generals. Not really an MMO but it appears to have a large multiplayer component as well as some RP elements. Best part is that is free.

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
