Unique features of this game?

I was told that "This is the kind of game you like", but I don't know why.  It looks like a D&D realms game.   What sets it apart from other games, especially D&D games?

What sets this game apart is that it is 1 million years old.  Or 13 or something like that.

Asheron's Call is the most unique fantasy game world ever created.

    1) no elves, orcs, trolls, dwarves, etc.  In the world of Asheron's Call every creature is unique to that title.  You fight Drudges, Banderlings, Olthoi, Tumeroks, Buru, Virindi, Umbris, Tuskers, Grievvers, and many others

    2) create your own play style.  Thru a combination of skill points be whatever class you want.  I was a non damage, life magic, defensive specialized Mage Tank on my main character.  A debuffing tank with 0 damage

    3) Completely open world.  Non-Instanced dungeons, you can run from one side of the world to the other, if you know where you are going.  A pretty cool and complex portal system to speed your travel.

    4) Being able to "tie" to a location...Like a dungeon a lot?  Save your recall and open portals for others to travel to the depths of your dungeon you have.  Sometimes, you could be the only person on the server with that portal.  (I had one of 2 Black Death Catacombs Portal ties, on HG for over a yr)

    5) FIND your spells.  You actually have to find every spell in game, you dont just level up and instantly have rank 6 of a spell.  As launch you could also discover your spells, thru a very tedious and unique spell system of trial and error.

    6) Directional attacking, and slider for attack bar.  Attack head, feet, or torso, arms, legs, etc.

    7) Only game with different types of attacks.  Play a melee or archer type, use Piercing, Slashing, Bludgeoning, Fire, Cold, Acid, or Lightning, as well as Hollow (armor ignoring).  Im not just talking looks either, some mobs were impervious to bludge (Tuskers) but hit them with fire and watch them burn quickly.  Fighting Olthoi?  Better have your Bludge weapon or you are in trouble.

    8) Underclothes, t-shirt and pants armor slots under your armor for additional buffs

    9) Build your armor to be strong vs all types of attacks listed above.  Fighting Tuskers?  Better be immune to bludgeoning on your Gauntlets or you will get smashed.

    10) Loot....best loot system in any game ever.  No boss farming, some mobs have tendencies to drop better/more items, but every mob has a chance to drop something great.

    11) Loot RNG...no loot dropped item is ever the same.  There are so many variables that its nearly impossible to ever see a duplicate item....ever.

    12) Salvaging, modify any item you find and go for that perfect item, but look out, you may blow it up.

    13) EXP sharing, while it turned into an exploit over the years, it was great to have a "Patron" who got 10% of his vassals exp earned, while actually providing new players and friends with starter gear and coin to help on your journey.

    14) 9 man fellowships, none of this 5 man groups, up to 9 total and exp is not only shared, but increased by the more people you have in your group.  Encouraging grouping but not forcing it.

    15) Real World housing. find a plot and design your house or villa or guild hall complete with dungeon.

    16) PVP open world pvp, with full loot on its pvp server, or the option to pvp on your own server

*Darktide is probably the best pvp experience ever

I can go on for longer, there is so much uniqueness in AC, it will never be matched again.

While I agree there seems to be much to like in this game, the game is too old looking at this point. Didn't this game originally launch last century?

Ah, yeah it sounds okay.  The person who told me that knows that I like games where you level up in x skill (swords for instance) by using the skill itself.  This doesn't sound like it is that way, but it still sounds okay.

What do you mean it sounds OKAY. Some people would kill for a modern looking game with those features. image

You do level sword when you use a sword. Every so often you get xp directly in the skill and some xp to spend on other stuff. But it isn't the main source of xp just a nice way to gain some points.

And yes, it was released '99 and will retire at the end of the year. Not sure how this will play out, if they will keep the servers up and just dont update it (monthly since '99) anymore or if they will release the server code so people can run their own servers. I heard both versions so really not sure which one it will be.

here is how leveling skills work

you use your sword to kill a drudge for 1000 exp

10% (an example) goes directly to sword skill and say it costs 400 exp to raise sword from 1 to 2.  you would now need 300 exp to level sword to level 2.  The other 900 exp goes into the "unspent exp" category, which you could in theory put into sword, or could put it into something different if you like (like life magic)

awesome.  What about if you're at level cap or whatever?  Can you "in theory" max all skills?

  • sneakysneaky Member UncommonPosts: 2

Yes, you can max skills. The max lvl int he game is 275, and much before that you will max all your skills (wpn skills, magics etc) and attributes (focus, self, coord, quick, endurance, strength) but once you max all those skills you can get augments in the game to improve your character (increase a attribute by 5 and can use up to 9 times) then once you finish that you can collect luminance and get special perks (get crit less, more damage)

On top of leveling a main char to max lvl. You can level a tinker mule its called to tinker, imbue, etc. What tinkers do are taking salvage from items dropped that you didn't need, and putting the items onto an item to improves its armor, its damage etc.

The sheer amount of quests in this game if your bored is just massive

It will take you a long time even at max to create a full suit of armor/weapons for just 1 character. Because as mentioned above all items are random, nothing dropped will drop again. So you want a max damage weapon you will maybe find it but then 1 stat will be off from making it perfect.

Yep. Graphics are certainly dated as this game is now almost 15 years old. (In October of this year, it will be 15 years since it originally launched)

Still though, the best and deepest mmorpg ever made. Period.

The newest, most hyped mmo ever made.. The Elder Scrolls Online might be prettier to look at, but it isn't even 10% as good of a game as Asheron's Call. Any anyone who used to play AC back in the day would quickly agree to this too, I guarantee you.

It's ashamed that mmorpg developers don't put their heart into games like they did back then with Asheron's Call. All they do these days is try to clone successful features and aspects of other games with a end goal of maximizing profits.

    Long live Asheron's Call!
