Im sure in 14 pages its been said, but it has nothing to do with the devs. its the players that have become antisocial. The changes to MMOs are an effect, not a cause.
Yup i know narus, and if a game wants to target solo and group with the same content then a d3 model would do the business - as long as they don't balance at the beginner player level to being in the masses.

Originally posted by Horusra Being forced to be in a group is not social. Wanting to be in a group is. The current generations only know forced grouping. Asheron's Call was about as solo a game as you could get, but I meet some of the best people that mostly did their own thing, but came together for the big stuff.
Exactly. For me A Tale in the Desert was the most social MMORPG I played and that game does not even have grouping mechanic. Instead it has systems that make it convenient for players to come together in an ad-hoc fashion and cooperate.
I agree. This is precisely why I think that the current paradigm of "group" as the fundamental unit of MMOs is more anti-social than social.
Simply put, if you put a limit of ten on a group, what do you do with the eleventh person? If you make a raid a 40 man, what do you do with the 41st?
The times when I saw the most collaboration (and, surprisingly, the most fun) is when I saw a spontaneous event happen in games like SWG and CoH. It was, quite seriously, the best proof you could find of F.A. Hayek and spontaneous organization (and I'm not even one of those Austrian freaks).
People--without having to be told--knew what to do. People--without having to be organized via teamspeak or vent of around guild tags--organized themselves to counter the threat. Takers tanked. DPS knew who to target. Healers healed who they needed to heal.
Frankly, I think we are a lot more "sociable" than we realize. However, the group paradigm and the guild culture has made grouping too much of a "big deal" to take lightly.

This model is already used by games like D3, and DDO and it works.
The same content can be done solo or in groups.
