Author should have started the article explaining that this list covers the process of crafting, not its usefulness in the game.

    Anyways...

EVE should have been in place of fallen earth.

    EQ2 should replace GW2.

And the author could have benefited from some research, or at least more of it.

Ryzom is by far a better system than Eq2, FF14, or GW2.  There's a lot of depth, but is easy to understand without getting bogged down in a lot of complexity for the sake of being complex.

MO seems to have been included because everything is player made, yet the system itself is needlessly complex for the sake of being as realistic as possible.  You literally need to understand how something is actually made in the real world to understand what you need to make it in game.  Complexity and thousands of useless items isn't depth, and that's what MO crafting is based on.

And the comments about FF14 being a ripoff or copy of EQ2 are hilarious.  They are nothing alike.

FF14 and VG are more similar but still not the same.  Crafting classes in FF14 are fully realized classes like any combat class in other MMO's with their own skill sets, gear, and even quests.  EQ2 is literally hitting 1,2,or 3 when 1,2,or 3 appears on your screen; not even close to how FF14 works, and as far SYSTEMS go FF14 certainly worthy of a top 5 list.

Next Top 5 article will have GW2 as the best sandbox i guess. And the next one, as the best themepark.

SWG should have been number 1.  Fallen earth? seriously?  did this jackwagon even craft in these games?

Asheron's Call.  If you blew your crafting there you lost your most prized possessions. People would search for buffs from players,items..anything just to get 1 more point towards success.

Read more of David Jagneaux's The List: 5 of the Best Crafting Systems in MMOs.

Where did this list come from? I hope not the writer, since he says in his opening paragraph that he's not a huge proponent of crafting in mmos.Anyway, my personal top 5 (in no particular order)Vanguard
    FFXIV
    SWG
    Ryzom
    UO

That was my thought, too, and then his first game mentioned (#5 - Fallen Earth) has the following snippet:
"One of the great things about the crafting system in Fallen Earth is how it allows you to continue doing other things in the game without getting bogged down at workbenches."
What? Following that criteria, SW:TOR should be in there since one's companions do all the crafting for you.

Players that feel "bogged down at a workbench" forget that getting better at something means a LOT of time put in. One does not start smithing with horseshoes or plate armor. They start with nails. One does not go into a Dojo (worth its snuff) and become a blackbelt in 3 weeks. Maybe these players feel that "Honorary Degrees" are equal to REAL Degrees?

Of course there is a fine balance between realism and "fun." Those not interested in crafting should steer clear of it and let those who do enjoy it, have their fun with it.

Personally, I have not found a "great" crafting system yet, though I keep hoping. EQ was the most intriguing, but some of their recipes made no sense. Animal parts for armor and weapons?

    - Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I do not see how the crafting in FF XIV is superior to the one in EQ2. It is almost a copy.

Best one, SWG because both materials and crafting depended on random numbers and the master level of the crafter.

Anyhow, the best system is nothing if the best items and consumables are not crafteable.

Vanguard should have made the list.  Was a fun mini game.

  • DullahanDullahan Member EpicPosts: 4,536
Mortal online was great in its level of detail and realism, but still ultimately boring compared to Vanguard.  A combination of MO and Vanguard would make playing solely to craft a viable alternative to adventuring in an MMO.

  • olepiolepi Member EpicPosts: 3,017

Two things make a good crafting game:

    1) the best items are crafted, not dropped. Mats to make the best items can drop from mobs, but no armor or weapons

    2) harvesting/crafting should not be push button.

Based on this, I'd say the two best I've seen are Ryzom (the best), and Vanguard.

    Triple post.

MO detail/realism + Vanguard Minigame challenge + Age of Wushu crafting interdependency for the trifecta.

Horizon's was my first MMORPG that I really played alot.  The crafting system was awesome except when it came to building structures.  The house construction was still pretty new when I left the game to play WoW when it first launched.  Alot of crafting systems lack creativeness and don't allow players to really customize their creations - either appearance, stats, or abilities.  Since playing Horizon's, I haven't really found a crafting system I can really enjoy.  Most just have a cookie cutter feeling to them and hardly feel rewarding for the amount of money and time involved.

I've seen a lot of games boasting "player driven economies" but how do they exactly define that?  If they mean - players have to spend lots of money to use or make stuff ... then I agree.  If they mean that the economy relies on players crafting, then I would probably disagree in most cases.  Housing typically relies on crafting but do you really need a house ...

Just like Runescape, a large majority of the items are craftable...

You mention these games in the conclusion but they don't even make the list when games like GW2 make it when it has virtually NO crafting to speak of?

No kidding...bloody hell David, you made claims of SWG being the only game where you could become a pure crafter and it hasn't really been seen again, nor does anything match its scale, but even Runescape pretty much invalidates that. And Eve...it is painfully obvious you spent nearly no time looking into the crafting system of Eve. People DO spend their career as pure crafters in Eve, it DOES match (actually surpasses) SWG's scale, and aside from the fundamental skillbooks and a tiny smattering of noob and faction equipment all of the in-game items in Eve were crafted/harvested/stolen by players, and there are THOUSANDS of different item types (approaching 10000 at the most recent estimate I know of).

    Where's the any key?

Rift and Lord of the Rings Online have crafting systems I like.  They are more complicated than WoW's which is too simple yet not so complicated as Vanguard Saga of Heroes.

There were people in Vanguard who crafted and did nothing else.

Vanguard, Hands down....in my limited experience.

I will let it go this time :)

SWG shouldn't have been on the list at all since the game is dead and buried.

    To you maybe,

To folks like me, let's just say we can't talk about them on this website and in addition, the title read "5 of the Best Crafting Systems in MMOs". The OP didn't state "5 of the Best Crafting Systems in MMOs' NOW".

Did it really need to be specified? Yeah, we're all aware games like SWG had better/more in-depth crafting systems, but it's not around anymore (yeah, yeah, I know), neither is Vanguard, so I think it's fair they weren't included.

Also, the title didn't say, "5 of the Best EVER Crafting Systems In MMOs" Let us not get hung up on the phrasing.

I have to agree with Asheron's Call. It wasn't even like it was designed to be a crafting game. It pretty much had zero crafting at launch and only later replaced rather useless racial skills with craft options. Even then you rarely got to craft actual equipment but mainly simply modified it. Yet this system worked incredibly well and put those good at it in the forefront of the game.

The system truly drew other players to the crafters far better than many mmos today which are mostly auction house games. You knew the names of the best crafters and depended upon them. Players were excited and white knuckled at the same time to finally gather their mats needed and hopefully was paying a crafter with the best chance to succeed.

The game's crafting was basically an evolution of trial and error through game design yet somehow made an incredibly fun crafting system albeit different than what most are familiar today with.

    You stay sassy!

I don't think FF should be on that list, SWG should be first and then EQ2 second. I mean, you could actually die from crafting in EQ2.

There are so many factors for determining what the best crafting system is. And they are all valid. But they cant all be in the same mmo.

FFXIV's crafting system is not as deep or entertaining as it appears...like anything else you simply do a rotation. In fact, it is more of a pain in the ass than anything.

SWG's crafting was light years (no pun intended) beyond FFXIV.

Thats fine. The act of crafting in FFXIV only makes up a small part of the entire crafting system in that game though.

Makes a list about the "best crafting systems"

Proceeds to only list the easiest ones.

    Such a shame.

I don't, I still play it and enjoy it .   Tough luck for you.

And what the hell are you talking about ?   " ran it into the ground"?  I find FE to be one of the best  F2P games out there.

Once again,   just another random statement from some random dude with nothing to back it up.
