Guild Wars is filled with wizards and magical forests. :P
Firefall, Wildstar, Alien Isolation, yeah I get with that train of thought. In movies too, Sci-fi generally better than fantasy.
Good graphics for me is nothing what those poll selections offer.I want graphics no matter high end or low end to have good definition in the textures. Then i prefer to see "sections" in the model and not just one mesh with several cheap looking textures painted onto it.An example would be say a Goblin roaming the land with a backpack on his back that moves on it's own, perhaps shoulder pads that also flap as he moves, detail like that.
I want detail everywhere in my game, that is how i know a developer cared to put the effort into their game.
Another area is buildings,i really hate any developer that makes 2D buildings with no insides, that is a VERY slack effort and tells me the rest of the game will have the same slack effort.
It is that detail that tells me if a game has some heart and soul put into it or is a game that looks like it rolled off an assembly line.
Pretty much the way I feel. The more hand-crafted and detailed, and the less procedurally-redundant, the better it is for me.
As far as specific "styles", I'm not overly picky. I think graphics style should be chosen based on the world/environment/setting the developers are aiming for in their specific game. It's never as simple as making something "look real" or "childish", imo. It's always about matching the style to fit the game, be it lore-considerations, or atmospherics, or mood or whatever.
Simple example. If you were building a space flight + space ship sci-fi game, where people were out exploring the universe and it was meant to be a simulation of a possible future reality setting, then obviously going cartoony instead of largely realistic would just be a rather strange choice to me.
Anyhow, like Wizardry was hitting on, I'm more interested in the "little things" than the overall style choice.
I think FF14:ARR did a great job on details and adding character to their world, for an example, and it left me feeling the devs really cared about their game world.
Originally posted by EclecticSkyDirt cel-shaded graphics work for me. Borderlands made a good use of it. FireFall MMO also does it great and runs smooth as well.
I didn't know what art style is this except just saying... "similar to Borderlands". I like it. +1 to Firefall for me for the visual direction they took. Plus, MMORPG!
If the gameplay and mechanics are fluid and satisfactory enough, i care nothing for the graphics. (I've played minecraft, WoW, Battlefields, Borderlands', Super marios, nintendo-games etc.. so all the graphical varieties i've played and i prefer neither over the mechanics and playability)

Here, here. It's not the rendering, per se, but what happens in the world you're in that actually makes that lasting impression. Whether it's cartoony, realistic, abstract, whatev...if some thing happens that surprises you, or delights you, even in the littlest sense, THAT can easily hook you on the game. No one cares for a world that looks, sounds, and acts too scripted and just rendered.
I've noticed Firefall fans here, and just had to wave a hand out to 'em, as I do like that game myself.
Any if them except cartoon. I found WildStar so over the top visually for me that I couldn't play it. I loved WoW and found the worlds immersive and beautiful yet SWTOR I found bland and a bit cartoony for my tastes.
I go for the cartoony types like Wildstar and Firefall, I've been a huge cartoon junkie growing up that this style has stuck with me ever since. realism does it for me sometimes, but I almost always go back to my preference.
If the game is good, I will play it no matter the graphics style.
Ok but which graphics style is your favorite. Seriously thats not a complicated question
Some players (like myself) genuinely don't care about the graphical style. It's simply a non issue for me when deciding which game to play.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. -- Herman Melville

So it doesn't impact the experience of the game itself? It would certainly lend a different feel to the games being played. Silent Hill wouldn't work with WoW's stylized graphics, but it could maybe work with TellTale Games' stylized graphics. I think the idealized realistic graphics they came up with worked the best for the games, but I think you get what I'm saying.
What about for purely aesthetic reasons? Independent of a game being attached to it, if you were simply watching vignettes from different games, is there an art style that you prefer?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
The most amazing graphics only impress me for about 20 minutes. After that the game is the same as a game with poor graphics. What I mean is you get used to the graphics after a while. For me anyway.

Suppose I like stylized realism the most.
