This made me realize two things. I really missed PvE end game / raid content. I missed party defined roles (tank, support, dps, healing). All of the content end game was a cluster Fu@#. Everyone running around doing damage, avoiding red circles, and rezzing party members. Every single fight was dodge red circles, dps, and rez. That's it.
This.
Also one thing I hated was the WvW tournament style crap. I want a persistent world where I fight against an enemy, not some e-sports week long match no one cares about.
Yeah we all know doing more than one task could be overwhelming for some brains. I mean its easier to stand in 1 place getting beat while a healer is spamming F1 on you, waiting for the dps to make the kill. Ah, fun times. So interesting. So awesome. You have got to love the trinity preachers.
NEWSFLASH: (and this one is big), if your party members are so lame that you have to rez them on every encounters, you are, the the thumb rule, doing something incredibly wrong. Food for thought and just my 2 cents.
Also, you knew the game was non-trinity and non-subscription game beforehand. Its even in the manifesto. Why the hell did you buy the game? To feel entitled to whine about it not delivering for YOU? That's some stupid money management right there.
What your'e describing is raid/dungeon boss design from 10 years ago. No game has tank and spank mechanics. Your straw man argument doesn't fly.
Funny you should mention that. How old was RIFT again. Or no no that was neat. How old is FFXIV? Ahhh it was deemed old school so that's cheating i guess. What about Lineage 2? How old is it, 8 years? Do we round up? I guess we do to make your argument true (since even WoW is not officially 10 year old, there are couple of months to go if we are to be precise). What about Neverwinter? We turn blind eye on that? And hey what the hell if you are good you can tank and spank in TERA as well.
/apply ice.
It is quite obvious you have never been in a progression raiding guild. It is okay. Not everyone can play at that level. Maybe those fights seemed easy to you because people were carrying you? It is most likely, that you are just trolling though......
I don't know what makes you trinity raiders feel so special o.O I've done the toughest of raids in almost every MMO and I must say that it is boring. Antharas in L2? Get 2 healers and recharger on your ass and just spam your taunt. Same shit for Valakas, just the occasional run away from fire stuff. Is this the tank's skill? Yeah... such level, so pro. Even Baium is a walk in the park if you pull him back to the freaking door. Aggro lock 12 enemies on you in PvP that just CANT kill you? Pfft, not a freaking problem. Jesus....
The only game I've played with relatively badass raids is WildStar. And on that you guys compain that there are more telegraphs than animations. So that's that.
I also played archer in GoD so DPSing wasn't much of a hussle
You are killing me with this title! LMAO We've only been talking about these problems for 2 years on everything. Reddit, their official forums, on every single mmo website out there.
Their economy sucks (although after seeing the fiasco that Archeage has turned into it looks like a cakewalk in comparison even tho it's still bad!)
None of their promises have been fulfilled from launch or even upcoming on their wiki pages like terrible rewards system, more weapons, ability to craft or find precursors, removing the grind for crafting ascended, improving methods of making gold in the game, actually balancing PVE for once (Engineers need a heavy boost in explostives, not grenades, mines and bombs and their explosive range and trigger zones), no more hobosacks, mounts, an actual veteran system in the store, actually adding a real wardrobe instead of Transmog 2 point 0, tons more skins that aren't restricted by box purchases, Actual minigames with meaningful rewards (like fishing), the list goes on. Traits cost of leveling and balance are the most talked about problems in the game that have remained unchanged since it began. Some classes don't even have the same choices in traits as other classes of the same type in roles. (I admit some of these weren't promised but you get the point of all of the things that are just wrong with the game)
If they actually spent time listening to their playerbase and looking at that tossed out suggestions forum it's all right there, Everything any of us including multiple game reviewer personalities from youtube have ever said about what's wrong, how can they fix it complete with examples and why those examples worked in the past in other titles (like pets for example which have always been weak in this game, they need to make them immune to splash/AOE damage 90% immune which every title has had to do since 2004).
I'm pretty sure they did most of the stuff on that Manifesto. They didn't explicitly say that you will have 5 expansions adding 10 continents in the first 2 years did they now? Also not to mention that most of your people are contradicting yourselves. Some scream for "something to do", they drop you ascended tier and there is your type complaining that it's too much of a grind. Well, newsflash, you are just as good in exotics but whatever. Also you can get full exotic in LESS than a week.
Also if everyone was able to craft precursors or find them, that would make just anyone run around in legendary. That would spoil the reward for you eventually. Trust me on this one. Also, when I got dusk in mystic forge I almost had a heartattack, so that's that.
Engineers btw are hillariously overpowered if played right. Think they need to be downscaled a bit, not ramped up. The only profession that is lacking is the ranger and that is going to be addressed sometime in October. The exact updates are somewhere at reddit but I'm not going to do the search for you.
I can name at least 5 minigames currently in Gw2.
Only weaklings complain about balance. My cookie cutter warrior has been handed his ass many many times by mesmers and rangers and engineers. And I just walk through those 3 classes most of the time. So ... make a better build, stop complaining. Play the game instead. Even the other night i had 1on1 with a mesmer in wvw. 12 fucking 0 and i tried various builds. He was just better, because i stomped like 10 mesmers afterwards, some even with similar builds as his.
And yeah the October path will be a huge boost to rangers, I'm actually considering rolling a one. Its like the only profession i dont have at 80.
I will remember Gw2 as best B2P game ever. Enjoyed a lot leveling my alts for half year (with exception of Wow and Swtor, with other games my attention is lost in 3-4 months) but then after some time that so called "dynamic random events" and particularly heart quests lost all appeal. Game - for my taste - would be much much better with good old classic quest hubs and progression. I usually also hate when I'm limited to single toolbar for spells (stopped to play TSW and Wildstar for this sole reason) as I hate button mashing, but with Gw2 this is not problem because one can swap weapons getting another set, in water similar, .... Left Gw2 as said only for quest system. And I do not think they will ever change that because would require to rewrite game. Still hope game will attract me enough some day to continue to play.
As GW2 has never asked me why I do not play their game anymore they are not likely to ever find out. I had taken it to mean that they don't care if I play or not.
I played GW2 for like 1600 hours before i left. It was one of my best experiences in recent times in a MMO. Anyway, i left the game when they started introducing time-gated content last year in the form of guild commendations. Because of my schedule, i couldn't join my guild several times and had to go scavenging around for guilds doing them. This is just one of many things that annoyed me when the Ascended trinkets came out, stuff that i don't recall right now. Lack of control over WvW transfers annoyed me as well. Mind you, i was on Blackgate (a server which did get stacked a lot) but nonetheless there was no feeling of loyalty.
Lack of expansions did not help either. I hate the living season. Season 1 started off as mind numbingly boring with silly quests every two weeks which lost me all interest in it. Now, i have no idea what happened in season 1 and the characters are continued in season 2 apparently. I tried to read the season 1 off the Wiki page but it's just so boring and just not the same as playing. The living season also never introduced a major new area (except for maybe the Karka island but nobody even goes there now). An expansion brings forward a hub for the new people which the living season fails to do.
I really feel sad when i think of all the good time i had in GW2 and i really want to return to it. But, as it is, i just can't with it's current state.
They would had done much better if they would had taken the guild System with guild halls, guild vs guild from their first game and only added the extras from the second one.
Instead they made the guilds feel disconnected since there was no real content people had to do together as a guild.
When they finally added guild quests most people had already given up and others got totally frustrated since small guilds had no chance to get their hands on these quests without grinding 24/7 for months to get the TONS of Points needed to level up to level 6 so they can be able to do such quests.
What I personally think would bring Players back would be:
- new race or races (more than enough possibilities on that through the Major and minor races in the game)
- additional classes (also many possibilities)
- bring back cantha/elona of some short for People to have more places to explore and add a lot of Content on them
they don't need to do much imo. if they make a big change they might get some people back but they might lose some others. also there are some that are determined to hate it no matter what.(whether unintentionally or intentionally).. also the new season is a lot better than the previous one. while quality and design matters there is always this thing called "timing" which also depends on luck. sadly many mmo players are hard to please these days. not saying this game is perfect and it only got bad luck but still.
my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2
most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.
Personally I think the developers need to go and play GW1 exclusively for a month and remind themselves of all the elements that made that game so much fun.
They then need to look at how they can introduce some of those elements into GW2.
eg : -
GW1 provided a sense of progression through an interesting story that actually alters the world around you and which allows you to unlock new areas with new challenges.
GW1 had a sense of connection to a persistent world where you actually fetl like events were unfolding around you, rather than this odd questing mechanic where you jump around multiple zones undertaking trivial tasks that do not tie into any over-riding story arc. I get a huge disconnect from the GW2 world.
Freedom in character progression, be that dual classes, a free choice of many skills, skill capping etc.
GW1 kept you playing long past level 20 via the story, the unlocking of new zones, interesting/ worthwhile achievements, skill caps, aesthetic items etc. GW2 removed most of that and provided only one carrot, an increased level cap, which is a pretty rotten carrot by comparison.
GW1 offered regular expansions that were games in their own right rather than this living story. For all intents and purposes the first season of GW2 may as well never have happened for the many people who missed it, it is now just a lot of wasted time and effort (unless they eventually put it on the shop, but even then it is a half-arsed effort to undo a bad decision).
GW1 was a unique game, heavily instanced, story-driven, unique class and skill system, low level cap; it did almost everything differently to other mmo's; unfortunately GW2 just became another generic 'WOWified' mmo with a couple of superficial differences.
Finally, and Most importantly, GW1 was FUN! They need to find a way to inject some fun into GW2.
1. Bring back the original trinity. healer-tank-dps
2. Give me the option to move around my 1-5 skills in the skill bar.
3. Add a meaningful PvP progression to WvW/sPvP. DAoC did it right in 2001. Why do modern games fail so bad at it? And no, +dmg against guards and other useless perks like that are not part of a meaningful progression system.
4. Remove the downed mechanic from PvP. Stop catering PvP to the PvE crowd.
I am one of those ex players who was very excited about the Manifesto. It was as if the developers were reading my mind. GW2 just didn' turn out like that. Some of the things I just don't like (not all in relation to manifesto btw) :
Traditional character progression : And in this case, very dull progression over too many levels. It all feels kind of pointless to me. As if they decided at the last moment to slap another 40 levels to max lvl. I am never really excited about slow character progression anyway. I play for the story, combat and exploration. I would've preferred lower max lvl and more max lvl zones like in GW1. The one thing I do like is how you automatically become lower lvl in lower lvl areas.
While I like having to chose skills for your skillbar( a la GW1), in hindsight I just don't like that so many skills are locked to your weapon of choice. And overall too few skills to chose from.
Gear tiers that are not just about aesthetics, but also stats. I know its not much of a difference, but the difference is there and that will just turn it into a gear treadmill (for me at least).
No Guildhalls, no Guild vs Guild PVP. Having multiple guilds you can join. I think this was a bad decision from a social point of view. It all feels disconnected and destroying major hubs for story, might seem like a good idea from a story point of view, but not from a social interaction point of view imo.
Hybrid combat. Not really twitched based, not really traditional MMO combat. Just meh on both sides. If you give me dodge skills, let me dodge anything if I am good enough. One or the other, not just some weird hybrid trying to cater to both sides.
Zombies. They look silly, they were too many and made areas just a pain to get through. Unless you followed the event train ofc Soo slow and so boring. Undead are overdone imo anyway. They just had to pick the one theme that I am so fed up with and filled endzones with them
Living story. Well, I missed most of that and are really not interested coming back to chapter numberwhatever. I still miss features that enrich a virtual world and strengthen social interaction (strong central hub where ppl hang out, guild halls you can visit with your guild, housing possibly).
Please stop with the adding of 3245879873254 achievement bars. It feels so gimmicky having everything tied to some achievement bar. This already started in GW1 later on, and I didn't care for it there. But now in GW2 it plays too much of a central role.
So yeah for me it would require a major overhaul, which ofc is not going to happen. So Arenanet went from amazing (GW1) to just meh (GW2) for me. I did love the dynamic events and graphical style though. Some of the new features like the wardrobe are very nice too. I also loved Lions Arch (before it was destroyed). Hmm, seems Anet didn't learn from presearing Ascalon.
After bring 3 chars at 80 i leave, end game is only fractals, and gear farming. Nobody cares about living story, everytime they introduce a new segment i leave after 2 minutes disgusted.
1) Bring back trinity, or at least let someone specialize in a role without to be hybrid
2) Classes are all the same because everyone is autosufficient, seems a single player game, you don't need others players or party, just join a zerg and kill stuff
3) Fragmentation of pvp and pve, no GvG, ro RvR, WvW is just a zerg maps where 3 servers conquer building and kill each other, there is no meaning for this, everytime i join this zerg, i gain nothing, i lose nothing and i leave bored after a while
There is nothing that can be done atm since Anet priority seems only the living story, after all GW2 is structured to be a single player game where everyone is indipendent, a big graphic novel.
Yes, i waste 1 year doing the same crappy dungeons everyday, farming gear, and do these sleeping living story, but only because there was nothing better to play, fortunately this stagnation will end and the end fo this year thanks to the new mmorpgs so finally i can unistall this crap forever.
Still don't get this thread? Most of the people who left the game didn't like it, why should they return? Creating a thread like this is a thread only for people who don't play the game and never liked it.
Would have been smarter to create a thread like "What can Anet do to keep their playerbase".
This thread is filled with people who will never return and I get your reasons. I played other games that I didn't care much for like Final Fantasy XIV, Eve, wow, and so on.
Why should I go back to these games which I don't like, it will never happend.
Guild wars 2 players need an expansion thats the truth, this would get some players back but never close to 3,5 millions. Anet should only focus on keeping their playerbase cause it has a good size. The game is nowhere near dying.
Changing things in core mechanics would never get 3.5 millions back either however it would make them loose 500000-1000000 players they have now.
Get players back? never happend. Find new players and keep the ones you got is the way to go.
Give us expansion, weapon skills, classes, races, more crafting, more spvp maps, more wvw content and upgrade it, more pve, more dungeons, more world boss events, more skins, housing, guild halls, well you get my point.

I disagree. I was a huge fan of GW1 and even some relatively small changes that took it back in the direction of GW1, particularly if associated with an expansion, might well bring me back.
More direct engagement between players and devs with "tangible" results in terms of bringing more people back "as is". Countless MMO forums I have read, with countless monster threads that had massive but well thought out posts tend to get sucked into a vacuum (or replied by the company with a one liner and no further responses as discussions/debate continue on).
IMO at times "some" people have better ideas than the devs -i.e.: oqueue - cross realm group finder tool - mod created for wow which the game still doesn't have the functionality to do (coming in WOD I believe). I think in this day and age, having a MMO with mod support is a must. It allows people to pickup the slack of the company, and/or add features not natively supported (as well as customizing their experience).
The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese.

1. I think you got this backwards. There was healing in Gw1 but there was no tanking (as in taunting shit)
2. That would be stupid, since they are ordered based on cooldown and its basically movements at #3 blocks at #5 and so on. Its rather complex and im too lazy to explain in details. Also you can rebind your keys. Be at least a little bit creative.
3. Heh I guess you only saw the first 5 letters of the new WvW skills. At max you get extra power and extra vitality. You get protective domes and extra damage on siege engines. But yeah...they added over 15 skills just to take less damage from guards. Seems legit.
4. Nop, I love you berserker rally bots. Please don't take this away so that the biggest zerg would always win.

well the combat and it's gameplay are great, i cant get into any other western MMO cause their combat feels so static ...
the actual problem with GW2 is not their living story or the removal of holy trinity (seriously both are great) but the fact that it is another themepark . if the game instead of WvW had GvG content, where guilds would fight even in the limited Mists for the PvE control, and let the politics to spin off then it would hook players and create addictions. Instead the developers preferred a casual game and mechanics which would create a polite society. Well they made it, the GW2 chat and community is one of the best i have ever seen in that scale.
so we have to choose what we want a casual and friendly game or an addictive one ?
back on topic Anet at the state they are only with a new boxed version would raise again their sales, the combats are great and for the name of Triforce i hope they wont add class limitations like tanks and healers ...
Nothing, Since i played GW2 entirely for the PvP namely the WvW I have zero reason to play it over ESO's AvA system. The PvP in ESO is just vastly better in every way, even with AOE caps in both games (and its looking more and more like the Dev Team in ESO is going to increase the cap or remove it flat out) the gameplay from ESO is just better. WvW has basically resulted in nothing more then each side sticking to a Blue Shield on the map and running around farming keeps and undefended objects as much as possible...Nothing but giant zergs. Not to mention playing on GW2 map after playing in Cyrodiil is just awful, Its so bloody small.

Posting a video about that one time (1 year ago) a smaller force beat a bigger zerg proves nothing. There will always be exceptions. It's not really difficult to understand how the downed system favors zergs. Just think, how can a small force beat a zerg? With hit and run tactics, kiting, forcing enemies to overextend etc. The downed system perfectly counters those tactics. It favors a defensive/passive playstyle. Just stick together and you will beat a smaller zerg in 99.99% of cases.

I won't do it for you, but be my guest and search youtube for recent videos of smaller forces defeating larger forces. I do it every night (well almost), when I raid with my guild. Raiding in gw2 means gathering 20-30 guildmates and go to war. Our raids continue until we clear up our borderland and then join the eternal battlegrounds in force. With teamspeak and microphones and only few people allowed to speak tactics (usually the commaders) and the rest able to say when they are down, and what is going on, like ... I used warbanner on the keep lord, Im down, Im back up, I dropped a waterfield near XX.
I like your strawman argument though. Video being 1 year old and whatnot
If PvP is what you enjoy, let me know where you are from (NA/EU) and I'll suggest a guild for you to see how real guilds do real WvW. Not random stomp bots.
Also we've had a couple of LOL moments when we were able to build ballistas and shot the larger blob into oblivion while they were regrouping and stacking might.
Also thanks to the AoE caps, a smaller zerg has to go through teh larger blob, dps and regroup.
And to the guy who was saying that TESO is about to remove aoe caps, I hardly believe that. No aoe caps with no friendly fire is just retarded combat. Keep the wishful thinking though.

- bring back cantha/elona of some short for People to have more places to explore and add a lot of Content on them
- Guild Halls with:
- NPCs (merchants)
- Crafting stations
- Training room
- Guild vs Guild possibility
- Progression to current storylines
- New living Story possibilities
my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2
most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.
Personally I think the developers need to go and play GW1 exclusively for a month and remind themselves of all the elements that made that game so much fun.
They then need to look at how they can introduce some of those elements into GW2.
eg : -
How to bring me back:

There are marsians plotting to invade Earth. Your post made as much sense yep.
Greetings
small off-topic,i have question, in GW 2 can you build for example, your own ship like in Archeage ,allods,, or buildigs (house, castle ,) ?
1. This post is what would bring me back to GW2, not what would make the game like GW1. GW1 was great for its time but it has many flaws, and it aged very badly compared to WoW/DAoC and other games of that time.
2. Removing options like reordering your skill bar that are standard in all other MMOs and even GW1 is stupid.
3. Wow extra power and extra vitality, such creativity!
4. You got that backwards. The downed system favors the bigger zerg. Removing it would make PvP more skill based and zerging weaker.

well the combat and it's gameplay are great, i cant get into any other western MMO cause their combat feels so static ...
the actual problem with GW2 is not their living story or the removal of holy trinity (seriously both are great) but the fact that it is another themepark . if the game instead of WvW had GvG content, where guilds would fight even in the limited Mists for the PvE control, and let the politics to spin off then it would hook players and create addictions.
So there is nothing they can do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODMDRLsglb4 - How did rallying helped the bigger zerg in this video exactly? I'm really interested what you think on this matter
According to your other points yeah I suppose you and I have some misunderstandings, like ... your new point 3 where you just read the first 10 or so letters of mine and that you don't agree that rebinding your keys is a good idea. However you are completely wrong on point 4.
