fps issues

DEATHRAMENTDEATHRAMENT Member UncommonPosts: 701

When playing wow my fps jumps around a lot. If im in a heroic dungeon and there is a lot happening my fps will dip down to 20 or so. My pc is not great but I would thing I shouldn't have this issue playing wow on the good preset with shadows off and some others things lowered. I ran mem test and no errors were found. Also ran prime for 20 min, noting was found. Something must be wrong.

How do I add my dxdiag info, not letting me paste it.

hi, i dont know how to paste dxdiag here sorry. However, regarding fps drops, you are not alone. I have a fairly old PC and although the graphic settings are set on Ultra as the recommended settings, i also get pretty low fps drops. The game isnt what it used to be, it doesnt run on a potato anymore. Try lowering some of the more intensive settings. Even as recommended, i have to lower some stuff too. in order to stay above 30fps.

That's the thing it doesn't seem to matter much if I have it set to low or max.

I've been building and troubleshooting computers since 1993.  Post all of your information and I'll see what I can do to help you.  I'll need all the relevant information such as CPU, Memory, harddrive etc.  Any information you can give me will help solve your issues or identify which parts you can buy for the cheapest to raise your performance.  Many times it's a simple matter of a single bottleneck ruining your fun.

You shouldn't be having fps issues with a machine like that and with shadows turned off. I have to wander if there is some program running in the background eatting up some of your system resources.

I wouldnt think that i should be having issues but i am. I formated my pc last night and put windows 7 on it. Did not help.

Your CPU and GPU are plenty capable.  The two hardware issues that I'd squawk about are your motherboard and your hard drive.  The motherboard is of the cheap junk variety, so it's possible that not everything in the CPU works quite right because it was never meant to go with that chipset, but there's no way that would be the difference between 20 frames per second and 60.

The hard drive, meanwhile, is slow.  I mean, really slow.  That should make zones take longer to load, and it could cause hitching at times (e.g., running at 60 frames per second, then stops entirely for 1/10 of a second, then goes back to 60 frames per second), but it shouldn't be able to cause a steadily low frame rate.

One thing that you should definitely check is your system memory usage.  Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, and check how much system memory you're using.  Do that while you're in WoW in an area where you get slowdown.  If it is using up nearly all of your 4 GB, then your problem is running out of memory.  Buying more will fix it, but so will closing background programs, as WoW should run fine on a 4 GB system.  If you're only using 3 GB and have 1 GB available, then memory is not a problem.

It's also quite possible that you've simply turned up some settings stupidly high and don't realize it.  Try turning all graphical settings to the minimum and see what frame rate you get.  I'm not saying to run at minimum settings forever; just to test it.  If you get a frame rate plenty high enough for your liking on minimum settings, then it's just a matter of picking out which settings are causing the problem for you.  Try turning settings up one at a time or a few at a time until you figure out what is killing your performance.

Ok thks ill look into that.

There's also a good chance it's heat related and the slowdowns are the built-in throttling kicking in to try to keep your PC cool enough to not die.

Could be dusty heatsink, broken fan, bad thermal paste, incorrectly installed heatsink, etc.

Is this a new problem, was WoW running well and then just start this behavior?

Are you hard wired in to your router/ modem, or running by wireless?

Have you got an idea what your temperatures are. CPUID HWMonitor is a good program for checking that.

And what is your network speed actually, what does speedtest.net say.

Confirm ram and graphics card are seated well.

Just a few things to rule out that may or may not be contributing factors.

Im thinking you just re-formatted and installed WoW again and little else, so I doubt a background process is doing this, assuming updates aren't running of course. You should be running fairly clean.

Game settings, or thermal issues, or a part failing /not making good connection, IP running screwy, are the first things that come to mind.

Looks like you running a Western Digital 1 TB hard drive of some sort, that shouldn't be a terrible part unless failing, and the rest are good parts. Provided the ram sticks arent in the same channel or some major assembly goof, system looks good.

Am a bit out of the loop but haven't heard anything about 6 cores not working well with WoW.

Parts failing would tend to cause things like blue screens or computer refusing to turn on, not merely low frame rates.  Overheating can cause hardware to throttle back, but it would be unusual if only certain areas of the game caused the hardware to overheat.  It is possible for it to be overheating all the time and throttling back all the time, but the hardware is so fast that in many places, you still get good enough performance.  That would strike me as strange, however.  But it certainly doesn't hurt to check temperatures directly and see if they're a problem.

What power supply do you have, and what case?  Since you ended up with such a low end motherboard and hard drive, I'm guessing you either bought a prebuilt or configured your system wrongly, and there's a good chance that you ended up with an inappropriate power supply and case to handle your other hardware.

Yes im hard wired 20 mb connection. Ive tested and im getting what im suppose to. IVe recently upgraded my pc mb ram cpu and graphics card. I dl speed fan and ive got 3 temperatures that r uin the low 60's c. Im not sure what they are it doesn't say. My graphis card is at 38 c, hd about 32. Basically ill be standing anywhere in the world and ill get lets say 100 fps. Then all of a sudden it will drop to say 40 or 50 for about 7 seconds and then it will return to 100. It wont stop doing that. Will do it over and over again.

Well, the max socket temp for an FX6300 is 62C (at least according to one semi-official source, I don't know if AMD has anything equivalent to Intel ARK). Internal temperature sensors also aren't the most accurate thing in the world, they can be off by as much as 10C, since they aren't calibrated to any standard.

    http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-FX-Series%20FX-6300.html

A: Safe CPU temperatures are 60 degrees Celsius and below. It may still run fine with CPU temperatures, exceeding 60C threshold by a few degrees. Running the FX-6300 close to 70 degrees and higher is not recommended.

AMD calls their thermal throttling "Cool and Quiet" or "CPU Smart Protection" - you supposedly can disable it in the BIOS. When the CPU starts to get too hot it will throttle the CPU speed back to 1400Mhz. You would be able to see this on something like CPUz or HWMonitor - the CPU Frequency would all of a sudden drop like a rock. Take note: the CPU frequency is ~supposed~ to drop like a rock when it's idle (it's power saving then), it would be this thermal problem if it does so while under some load.

It would fit nicely with your description: Your playing a game and get to a spot where the CPU gets to crank a bit. Things start to get too hot, it throttles back for a few seconds (your FPS tanks), it cools back down just enough to kick back into high gear again, at which point it overheats again, and the yo-yo cycle just keeps repeating.

ok this is weird i download cpuz and on the first tab under cpu under core speed the speed keeps changing(not sure if its normal)

it goes from 3799 at its highest down to 1399 at its lowest and a few points in between, changes every couple of seconds. It does this even if im browing the internet.

It's fairly normal under light loads. That's Cool and Quiet trying to balance your CPU needs with your power draw.

Under no load it should stay more or less at 1400.

Under high load it should stay more or less at 3800.

If it's bouncing under high load, there's a thermal problem and it's trying to keep your CPU from frying itself.

I would download Prime95. Run it, while watching CPUz (or HWMonitor - where you can see the CPU temp as well).

If it's bouncing with Prime95, or if it starts high but then goes and stays low, your CPU heat sink is probably the culprit.

ok im testing with prime as i type it mostly stays at 1399.92 it will go up for a 4 -6  seconds then back down to 1399.92 for 30 or 40 seconds and stay there. It cycles like that. I dont see any temperatures in cpu z. Im connecting remotely to my pc at home and i lost the connection while running prime, it must have shut down....

I tested prime with my gamming laptop and once the test starts my core spped goes up and stays up the whole time.

    So there is something wrong.

    Yup.

Some combination of four things really:

    - Fan on your CPU heat sink is broke/breaking and not spinning at full speed
    - CPU heat sink is full of dust/dirt and needs to be cleaned out
    - Case has inadequate ventilation, your CPU heat sink is dumping heat into the case and it's getting trapped in there
    - Thermal paste under your heat sink went bad.

Take the side of your case off - start with a canned of compressed air and blow the crap out of everything, particularly your CPU heat sink.

With the case cover off, turn the computer on and watch the fan and run the same Prime95 test. It's pretty obvious if it's having trouble, under full load it should be spinning like crazy.

After all that, if it still has trouble, you need to pop the heat sink off and remount it, with new thermal compoud. Thermal compound alone sets you back $5-10 depending on what kind you get, and at that level of involvement I would just get a new decent heatsink to stick on there (a decent one only needs to run about $25-30, and will come with the thermal compound).

Are you actually using vendor drivers?

It was over heating. I watched the temperature go up when running prime and as soon as it hit 61 my core dropped right away. I cleaned heatsink and re-applied paste and it fixed it no more slow downs in wow. Although im still reacing a temp of 53 while playing. Not enough to make it throttle down but obviously time for a better heatsink. THks a lot for the help.

A cheap junk motherboard isn't doing you any favors as far as good power delivery to the CPU goes, but that shouldn't cause overheating all by itself.  The stock heatsink that comes with an FX-6300 should be completely fine so long as you don't overclock.  Speaking of which, you shouldn't try to overclock with that motherboard, anyway.

Earlier in the thread, I asked what power supply you have, and what case.  I never saw an answer, and both of those are very relevant here.

    ------

There are two very different reasons for a CPU to have the clock speed throttle back.  One is that it likes to reduce power consumption at idle.  The other is that it's running too hot and fears frying.  The former is normal and good, but the latter is a problem--and you're seeing the latter.

Im running an older antec 500w psu, in an older matrix case. Psu is about 4 years old now.
  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,483

Exactly which power supply is that?  I want the model number, not just the brand name.  I don't think Antec has released anything in the ballpark of 500 W in the last four years bad enough to likely be a problem for you, but sometimes people who only give partial specs are guessing and don't know what they have.

    If this is your case:

with only a single case fan to handle heat output in the ballpark of 250-300 W, then that's likely the problem.  It looks like it has mounts to add two more case fans, and adding them would probably help.

If that's not your case, then what do you have?

That's the exact case, fan doesn't work in it either...The psu is an Antec earthwatts. Model EA-500D

And we've found the problem:  no airflow.  Under realistic gaming loads, your system could easily be putting out 200-250 W.  If you have plenty of case airflow, the hot air gets carried out of the case and replaced by cooler air.  That's how cases are supposed to work.

But you don't have any case fans at all, so you don't have plenty of case airflow.  Instead, the interior of your case just gets hotter and hotter.  The CPU and GPU fans do their best to blow air at the parts, but blowing hot air at a CPU doesn't cool it very well.  That's why you have overheating.

And the CPU isn't the only heat problem you have.  If the entire interior of your case is hot, that's bad for everything except the hard drive.  The CPU throttling back is merely what alerted you to the fact that you had bigger problems.

Fortunately, the solution is cheap.  Buy three of these:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835209005

Stick one in the front fan slot, one in the side, and one in the back.  You want the front and side fans blowing air in, and the back fan blowing air out.  There is also a power supply fan that blows air out.  You don't strictly need the side fan, but I would get one anyway.  You definitely need a front and back fan.

You don't need that exact fan, but you do need 120 mm case fans.  I picked that one because it has a volume discount.  Decent quality aftermarket fans start at around $10 each or so.

Incidentally, you have a decent enough budget power supply.  So long as you're leaving hardware at stock speeds, I see no need to replace it.  The case should also be fine once you add fans to it.  But do add those fans--and don't try to play games until you do.  Turning the computer on but leaving it essentially idle (e.g., for browsing the Internet) is fine without case fans.
