The way I look at it is that you are actually "doing something".
Most quest based games have me running around reading text, doing something a few times and then running around with more text.
That's why I like the single player elder scrolls games over, say, ESO.
I can get in a dungeon and explore and "do something" for a while. Fight, go from dungeon to dungeon exploring and discovering or reliving the dungone. But after a while doing one quest after another quest after another quest gets tiring as they don't sustain over the long haul. I'd much rather have a looooong quest with a lot of components than bite sized quests that have me doing very little but traveling and listening.
I just want to "explore the world and make my way discovering and fighting monsters" all the while progressing at a reasonable rate.
So do I. I want to explore but I also want to find interesting things along the way.
The kind of grinding that comes to my mind however whenever I hear the word is camping and killing the same mob spawns over and over because they give good XP or loot. I find that worse than questing and was pretty well all we had in Asheron's Call when I played that 15 years ago. The PVE part of DAoC was also quite a bit like that, especially as you reached level 50 and had to grind the XP.
Or I think of games that force you to gather a humongous number of mats just to craft simple things... I also hate that.
Both of those activities just give me an uneasy feeling that someone is getting me to do things I don't really want to do just so they can collect another month's sub from me... which was, after all, a core component of subscription MMO monetization especially in the days before raids and other "end game" content became the normal way to try to keep you subbing.
Skyrim, I did not find grindy at all because of the tremendous variety of different places to go and find different mobs and the many surprises you find along the way... I never felt like I was repeating content. But Skyrim is not what comes to my mind at all when I hear the word "grind."
I also don't find ESO PVP grindy because it's just emergent game play after all - always different.

Some people think that grinding equals fun. Doing the same things over and over again.
Why is that?
I'm very happy to see that many MMOs allow us to buy things instead of grinding for them. IMO everything in a game should be able for purchasing. Equipment, races, levels and what have you.
I don't grind for fun, I grind for a sense of achievement and reward.

Quests and Leveling Up - To Quest or Not to Quest
The most efficient way to level up is to grind like crazy and complete worthwhile side quests along the way. The Black Spirit quests rewards items and enchanting stones. All of the other quests are not so important unless you want contribution points used for purchasing houses, unlocking trade points, rental equipment, and more. Pearl Abyss added new mini quests in this beta where you can collect a certain amount of items from the monsters and turn it in for money. This solves some of the financial issues players run into while leveling up, as long as they are farming at the right places and not vendoring the item drops. I wasn't concerned on getting to level 50 right away so I did a lot of side quests here and there between my grinding sessions.
If grind means killing shit for experience over and over to gain levels, then yes I like grinding. I get bored of doing it in the same location for too long, so I just move on to a new location. What fun is buying an item using RMT? Why bother playing the game at all if you just purchased all your equipment?
Grinding, gearing, speccing, levelling is needed without it, you are just given everything on a platter. I would rather play a game where I have to work for an end character.
If I want a game where character building is irrelevant, I can play halo.
All games have grinds. Its used in a negative manner but its pretty much the core of gaming. The best have grinds with steady but slow increases in difficulty. But whether its Tetris or WoW or whatever - they all have grinds. I like to play tennis - and when you play tennis you hit balls over and over and over again. Is it a grind? Sure but its also fun.

Nah .. not for me.
No MMORPG has combat as much fun (to me) as the Diablo series, except may be marvel heroes.
Diablo 1 and diablo 2 maybe. Diablo 3 was a disappointment for me.
They did 5 unholy things that I cant forgive in diablo 3.
1. Non optional, fully invasive inspect which means people can steal your build and as diablo is a character building game this is unforgivable as it prevents competition.
2. Toned down story made much more kiddy, try watching the bhaal and marius vids from diablo2 then watch the diablo 3 ones and you will see what I mean.
3. Gearing errors like rorg meaning that everyone has to wear similar set pieces as opposed to the mass of ultra unique non set items. Basically lack of gearing diversity leading to lack of build diversity (non optional inspect on top just ruined all character building competition).
4. Removal of stat point allocation which adds extra depth to character building.
5. Removal of skill synergy benefits aka late diablo 2 expansion patch which was the only time ive seen it done like that which is amazing.
For these reasons, I am no longer a diablo fan and will now be switching to grim dawn for my hack and slash fix.

Actually, I have not tried that game. But we can see most people like to play MMORPG with grinding. Admit it, when your just a beginner, you admire grinding.

I'm playing Everquest right now. Level 56 Ranger in the bloodfields. Enjoying this more than WoW:WoD, SWTOR, WildStar, ESO, TERA, The Secret World and countless other games I own on my machine.
Am I supposed to stop?
Some people think instant gratification equals fun. Why is that?
I like legit grinding. Like having to wait at a spot for a couple hours just to get a bad ass whatever > getting it > then logging off because my day is complete
I hate bottlenecked grinding from games that claim all items in game can be obtained but the loot rate is reduced to 0.000001% so you're basically forced to buy shit from the store.
If you don't like grinding. MMORPG's are.. not.. for.. you..
Why don' t you guys play Rohan: Bloof Feud? Its a Global Server now. It has many dungeons and more fun grinding system. It has many updates. They improved the game play of it. I enjoyed playing Rohan. Check it out guys, I'm on Isen server. Let's go Hunt boss and kick some PK players ASS!
Well grinding for iRohan isn't a problem.. why? because they do have a legal bot called "Hunter Kit". Hunter kit is similar as bot "program" but then IT IS NOT A PROGRAM, it is an item that is used to be purchased on iRohan's Item Mall, can be obtained through quests. However, the down side of this is that the same kits are "timed" based. Meaning they could also lasts for 8 hrs, 24, 48 hrs days and even a month depending one the life span of the Hunter Kit's that you've bought. The bright side for this is that you don't have to worry about manually grinding since it could do the work for you, killing mobs, getting loots, heal itself through assigned skill or potions, casts buffs to itself and it could even feed your pet.

I don't see the grind is bad if it not effect to my gaming enjoyment .
If the grind only block few stats points or some skill upgrade then i'm fine with it .
But if the mass grind block all the contents then it very bad . To get better gaming , i need to grind for few month ? no , thank! .
I don't grind for fun, I grind for a sense of achievement and reward.

grind with the style....

Because combat is fun for many?
That's what the developers of WildStar said.

If I want a game where character building is irrelevant, I can play halo.
And that is what many players of Diablo 3 said. I would say it works for the games which really have good combat.
