Hmmm what's more fun? Having fun straight away (aka instant gratification) or preparing for having fun some time in the future (grinding).
    Wonder what's better?

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

That doesn't even make sense, but then the poster above rightly talks about perception. Would football be more fun of players scored every second? Your need for instant gratification is in itself a form of 'grind' - you need to 'grind' constant rewards. Perception.

I liked grinding in L2 for gear recipes, with my clan. I guess that makes the whole difference, to have like-minded people you can work together to a common goal (whole-clan gearing).

    video games are not football.

Will FPS be more fun if you get to shoot enemies only every 10 minutes?

As long as gameplay is enjoyable, grinding is awesome. Look at the FPS genre and Battlefield. It's a grind to get to rank 140. But the game is built to be enjoyable at all times. Even from lvl 1.

Read about the Standford marshmallow experiment.

“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.”

The point is that it can be fun building up over a long period of time to get a reward - its the buildup that makes it satisfying.  Now a FPS is all about a continual stream of adrenalin hits so you would expect it to go down the frequent reward route - however when you look at the underlying design you still see 'grinds' - long term kill statistics for rewards and standing. For people who enjoys working towards those goals in a FPS its not a grind, its part of the buildup.

As i said previously the title for this thread  'do you like grinding?, really!!!!!

should be 'do you like [the thing i dont like doing]?, really!!!!!'  because in reality that is how the word 'grinding' is used in these forums.

edit actually reference to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_marshmallow_experiment above is a great shout.
