Played this game at launch however it came at a bad time and I only got to level 23. Seeing as I've got a good few months free now, I finally want to give this game a proper try. Anyhow, got a few questions for anyone who can answer.
I'm 100% sure what class I'm going yet but will most likely choose a tank, as a new player would this be a good or a bad idea? I imagine group finder queues will be a lot shorter which is good however as I'll be new, am I going to get a lot of stick from players if I can't "speedrun" like they want to?
Outside of Paladin/Warrior, the other two classes that interest me are Monk and Dragoon, is any of them in a good/bad place balance wise?
When I played originally, I kind of enjoyed grinding the fates, is this still viable and have players doing it in all level brackets? With the game being out a while, i'm a little worried there won't be as many people to do them with.
Any useful websites with decent guides and info I should check out? Doesn't seem like that many resources around and it took me longer than I would have liked just to find what requirements you need for the advanced classes.

go with a tank for sure, you will almost always have a group and only need to wait like at max 5 minutes for any group haha. I went marauder and its ok, but im going to level up the knight/paladin what ever its called. I'd rather be a full blown pve s/s tank as opposed to the marauder. but I know ppl like both classes.
If you have free time, I also recommend you check out Arche Age as it will be coming out in September. Its free to play or you could subscribe and get some benefits, but youd have to search their site for the benefits. I'm planning to do arche age full time for a couple of months then return to ffxiv if arche age ends up not suiting me, as ESO ended up suiting me, hah!
but, anyways, you've freed up at a great time and if you juggle both FFXIV and arche age i'm sure you'd end up liking one or the other.
Beyond that I dunno what else is out there in terms of upcoming games
I also have the same question though, with the low level to mid level playerbase not really around as much, whats the best and most efficient way to level, and is fate humping still an option?
Tanking is the most demanding role initially, but it becomes the easiest role by endgame. SE has given a lot of perks to tanks like unique mounts and more rewards from content so it's a good role to start with if you know how to play one. You may get the occasional asshat that doesn't care that you're new but I don't think its going to be the norm.
All classes are balanced enough for you to not have to worry about it.
People grind FATEs in some level brackets but dungeons give good exp as well, and there's lots of ways to level up. Grinding FATEs is not as popular as it was in the beginning, people have spread out a lot more.
Thinking about coming back myself and I was working towards becoming a scholar. I healed some as a Conjurer though and it was a blast.
Don't know about tanking but you generally have to be prepared to be the "leader" of a group as is true in most MMOs.
My FFXIV ARR referral code for new EU accounts: 5JPF7ZQ3
Step into the amazing world of Eorzea! Use this reference code on a new account and we'll both get goodies for it!
1) DPS Queues right now arent that bad. Probably like 10-25min range. In the meantime you can do things like hunting log, levequests, fates.
2) Dungeons are the fastest way to level characters below 50. Theres a new dungeon available every 2 or 3 levels so by the time you get tired of one there will be a new one to play.
3) Fates are still good exp but not as many people will do them as before. There will probably be 1 or 2 more people helping you and if you need help with it you can always /shout and ask for help in the region. you can also try to make FATE grinding parties.
4) If you want to play a tank, you need to have thick skin. People will hold you responsible for everything and will blame you when things go wrong. Playing a tank isnt super hard but you need to know what you are doing. If you cannot hold aggro and monsters bounce around and start attacking your party members people will tend lose their shit at you.
5) Dragoon/monk are pretty good DPS choices, theyre a bit harder than ranged to play because you need to be within melee range of the boss during boss fights and you have a higher chance of dying.
6) Class info guides. Type in ffxiv monk or ffxiv dragoon in google and the first couple of hits (i think one is ffxiv info one is gamerscape or something) are pretty useful.

Starting out as a tank will give you plenty of access to group content, and the damage difference between tanks and other jobs has been kept thankfully low on the soloing side thanks to clever design choices on part of Yoshida and Co.
The game is made to be as easy as possible to get into, and I doubt you will find the mechanics of dungeons or the any of the classes all that confusing. Both tanks develop a simple combo that you follow through for holding aggro on a single mob. The abilities light up as you work through the rotation, thus letting you know what to do next.
If you want to go marauder, your side jobs to level will be monk and gladiator. If you opt for gladiator, the two side jobs would be white mage and marauder.
Don't worry about people requesting speed runs. You will not find a great deal of people like that during the leveling experience.
Fates used to be the only way to level quickly, but that has been taken over by dungeon runs with the duty finder, which provides bonuses for doing random dungeons. By doing your one daily low level dungeon, you will gain a huge boost to XP that can take you up half a level or more.
