[Preview] World of Warships: Leaving Drydock & Ready to Set Sail

As a Retired Navy Chief I was skeptical of how well Wargamming could possibly understand Naval Warfare and be able to capture the feeling, but I have to say that for such an early Alpha build they are on the right track.

I'll believe it when i experience it myself. Have zero trust in this (or any for that matter, as it should be) company. The authors own nostalgia could well be coloring the preview. (sorry but had to be said)

I'll be their with bells on  * IF * they have a PVE mode that you can actually earn something in. But it will most likely be just like WoT and WoWP where it Team PVP..

ANd those of us not good at this are fooked...

I still like WoT, even if it could actually be renamed World of Auto-loaders at this point.  Probably because I invested in a lot of autoloading tanks.  The game has completely changed from a lumbering WW2 tank game to a fictional alternate reality game where 90% of the tanks in every match only ever existed on a napkin that some allied or axis engineer doodled on.

I still play it tho, I just wish it would go back it's roots or have a game mode where only actual, in-production, WW2 tanks were allowed.

WoWP on the other hand was personally very boring.  One nations aircraft were obviously and painfully far superior to every other nations.  Once I started flying those planes I would get 3-8 kills per match.  It was absurdly easy.

I'm looking forward to this game and hope that it's more like WoT than WoWP.  Although I'm a little worried about how fun a game on the open seas without any terrain will become.

I just want to hear "that one bounced" in World of Ships.

I would think in World of Warships it would be "That one skipped".

I'm looking forward to this one Chief for the same reasons. Any here's to hoping that we do get  our old girl in game. Even in her launch configuration, Midway would rule the seas!

This the same type of game as World of Tanks but with boats I dont think they have any PVE planned I am afraid.. either way I would think this plays a lot different than WOT so you might be good at it :)

The one thing is missing from all of wargaming.net's games is the lack of playing against the computer.  It's not like it's not capable, I enjoyed the missions in WoWP that teach you the basics.  I hope that they someday build upon those to make a great PvE experience, but it'll probably just stay as the team with best vehicles wins 90% of the time.  Nothing like getting into a tank battle with a bunch of tier 8 scouts and 2 tier 9s, you're the only tier 10 on the team, while other team has 2 tier 10s, a bunch of heav tier 9/8s lol.  You'll lose 99% of that time in that one.

Will try it but I`m afraid this like the other Wargaming products will be pay to win......ye you can play f2p but can only advance to tier 8 in tanks then 80% of all battles your losing credits so in fact you cannot play tier 9 or 10 in f2p thats if you can grind a lot of hours to unlock the tier

I find it odd they left the British out since their navy was at least comparable to any other countries at that time.

Well I am also a retired Senior Chief and have played WoT's as well as many other Naval war games (Computer and board games).  The issues with WoT's was one of balance and favoritism (anything Russian).  It got better then got worse with the intro of post WWII tanks.  The Navalized version will likely be the same.  Initially the plan is to go with a few Navies and then expand.  They were supposed to span WWI to WWII initially.  There will be fantasy Island ships (The German "H" class BB and US Montana BB) none of which sailed).  I would imagine something from the Russians will be included - and one has to wonder how unbalanced these will be....if it is German it will die quickly....but it is free - and I will give it a look but I will not expect anything approaching historical.

I remember the first time I tried drydocking. Very uncomfortable to say the least.

To the Captain of CV-41 USS Midway. Thank you for your service first and foremost. Weather he is on Wargamings bankroll or not, any man or woman who has served for our country should be respected and thanked for their time and dedication.

As far as WoWarships, I hope that they actually employ real world tactics and not arcade style where people will hide behind islands. I hope that there is a mechanic that if someone is doing this the tide rolls out and they are beached on a reef stuck. I have High Hopes and pray that Wargaming does not allow Warpack style mods. It is for this reason I no longer play World of tanks. Games should be learned, played, and enjoyed. Not Modded so you can have an I win button and think that you are some great gaming god when in reality you have no skill and have to MOD to have any chance of competing.

  • I will be looking into this, I had heard about it but didn't give it much thought until this article. Thanks for something to look into.

I saw a bit of it at pax and was also worried it was going to be like tanks only with ships...peak-a-boom ships would be stupid.

It does seem to be more sail out and punch each other in the face till one of you sinks right now but that could just be because everyone was new. I saw a ship dodge a torpedo which was....interesting. There were no carriers in yet that I saw so not sure how that will work but I'm thinking arty :/

And I hear you on the warpack thing. No matter how lame people appear ...the internet shows us people can always find a way to one up it. Using that mod couldn't make someone a bigger loser in the internet world at least.

  • HanthosHanthos Member UncommonPosts: 242
I seem to recall right after it was announced, the subject of carriers was discussed and they were going to be the last thing introduced due to the complexity and wanting to get everything else right first.

I think the game will have success and I will definitely try it. Not sure about "level of realism" though - its often case that too realistic approach hinders the gameplay. Hope there wouldn't be needed 5 minutes of maneuvers before a shot.

I think that it's good if it will be a bit similar to Wind of Luck: Arena - action naval combat with tricks and much faster movement than in reality (WoLA, though is about sailing ships battles)
