From an article on CNet, Microsoft is quoted on their XBox Blog as saying sales have doubled since they offered an XB1 without the Kinect.
Here's something else. Those interactive shows that were supposed to take advantage of the Kinect have been cancelled. This is old news to some people.
Is this important? Well, if you are Microsoft and you banked the future of your console sales on the Kinect, yeah, it's kind of important. The XB1 (and the Xbox 360) are not Interactive Entertainment Systems. All those caveats about how the PS4 was "just" a gaming system have fallen a bit flat.
So where do they go from here? Well, better games of course. I'd love to do a little "Ha! Ha! Sony, the cr@ptastic king of cr@p is better than Microsoft!", but really, the result is going to be better games. If Microsoft makes better games on the XB1, focusing on games as they should, then what is Sony's response going to be? Hopefully not "Interactive Entertainment". It will probably be better games. :-)
Microsoft has failed, but the gaming industry is going to win.

I'm pretty sure the reason sales went up is the price dropped 20% without bundling it with Kinect. I don't think this can really be construed fully as an indictment of Kinect.
It is an absolute demonstration that the Kinect isn't worth paying what it costs to produce and sell.

Or just that people want a choice in what the purchase. Not everyone that wants and xbox will use a kinect, but there forced to purchase it anyway, which doesnt make sense.
I can see that the meta trend is going to be that Kentict was a technological failure I can see all the article now.
Its something I dont agree with. I think it has more to do with the games that were released for it, features that were tried with it, and forcing people to buy it, and the whole spy fear thing.
Also, I see where Microsoft as a company has fallen asleep in various categories and when it comes to the Xbox One I go into a complete rage but with that said, I do think the press is unfair to them.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I consider more like a problem and annoyance, kinetic need to ahve a certain space to be used, with myself I don't have, also most kinetic games are not that good or only I looked who could be fun to try was that DragonBall game, I don't remember to see anything else for kinetic who could be good enough for me to spend and even have a space for it
I don't see it like a technological failure, but I see it as a lack of good games enough to be a something must have, right now is like the pistol controller in the old systems, just for some really fan of that would be looking for it
The Kinect is an amazing piece of machinery. It does what it does very well. I think the problem with the Kinect is in the applications to which Microsoft is trying to put it. It's a solution in search of a problem. It's fantastic with full bodied games, like Dance Central. Not so much for anything else related to gaming. I did see a demo where a guy had hooked the Kinect into his PC, and was casting spells with it, and that was really cool, but I haven't seen anything like that with the XB360 or XB1.
I think the end result overall is going to be better games. Both on the XB1 because developers won't have to shoehorn in something to do with the Kinect, and because now Sony has to compete with another very capable gaming system instead of a jokey "Entertainment System".
