Just finished watching a review of Destiny, and something that stood out was that the game is locked to 30 frames per second. Now, this isn't a super big deal to me. I have a very old PC, and locking the FPS to a slower frame rate gives me acceptable performance. I can see the difference between 30 and 60, but it's not something where I feel like I can't play a game or that I'm losing out. Once I upgrade this might change, but for now, 30 FPS is fine.
What about you? What have you become accustomed to and what is your limit? Does 30 FPS look like a slide show to you, or have you reached the point that if the minimum FPS isn't more than 60, you slam your keyboard tray in disgust?

I think FPS, is kinda like a cars 0-60 time.
It matters. You can tell if a car is faster than another. But mostly is a measurement of ones cock size.
Many games lock frames, and there are speed limits almost everywhere.
It's hard to explain but playing at 60fps makes the game look "right there" while lower frame rates give a different feel. One thing I can't stand is playing at 60fps and having it dip. Seeing the difference is what really ruins the experience for me.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I would agree with this. Having a steady 30 FPS to me gives a better experience than having an average of 60 FPS, but with dips and peaks. That said, a steady 60 FPS would be better, but given the hardware I have available, that isn't going to happen.

30fps works, especially in the console world.
I mainly play games on a PC with the graphical settings maxed ( will build something new when the current rig isn't cutting it). On my gaming rig I only play at 60fps specifically to enjoy the extra eye candy.
Well, here are some fun facts:
Fighter pilots claim eye fatigue sets in around 16fps in simulators
Movies are shot at 24fps, but that's not because that's ideal, it's been a standard since forever!
The Hobbit (3D HFR) was shot in 48fps 3D (so 48 frames per eye)
I've seen sample footage of each with side-by-side comparisons and you can definitely notice a difference. If you saw The Hobbit in 3D HFR and regular 3D you'd probably notice a difference. If you watched any other 3D movie (filed at 24fps) versus an HFR movie, you'd definitely notice a difference.
As soon as VR becomes more mainstream, higher framerates will also be required, in order to maintain the immersion. Beyond 60fps, I'm not really sure.

At no point does 30 fps work for a AAA game unless you've been brainwash to think so, especially when the game dips far lower than that during large explosions/effects and 4+ players on the screen.
The worse part of the whole Destiny fiasco is all these game review sites that would DEDUCT points from console games if the gameplay suffered frame rate lost, YET it's ok for Destiny to lock in 30 and will most likely get a perfect "10/10"
30 FPS is no problem to me. I really think the average gamer would not be concerned about wheather or not a game runs at 30 or 60 or 100 FPS if all the self appointed "experts" like Total Buiscuit and others did not whine all the time about it.
I have been playing games on computers and consoles since the begining and do like the inprovements that have occured. But, when you hear about a new game one of the first things that are mentioned is the graphics. Myself I would play, and have played, games at 800x600 and really enjoyed some of them more tham the current crop of crap that has amazing graphics, FOV, and very high frame rates.
Anyway this is just me.
Newsflash, FPS is fluidity of motion not graphics per se. This fluidity of motion directly affects response time in controls.
So in a sense you are right & I agree with you. I'd rather play a game in 720p with 60fps than 1080p with 30fps. But since 1080p is a trending term and selling point, they cater to it.
30fps is unacceptable in 2014, much less in ¨next gen¨ platforms that can handle 60fps very well. Destiny alpha and beta ran very very smoothly but it is still very noticeable the 30fps limit. I dont know what Bungie is thinking, keeping in mind their Halo games were on older machines.
Not going to talk about PCs because it obviously has more power, but game devs need to stop ruining next gen console games with 30fps crap.
I liked Destiny but with half the framerates i will most likely buy the game at half the price. Gimmie the full experience and ill give you the full price.
EDIT: to anyone brainwashed to believe 30fps is good or just fine, go play Darksouls 2 on PC(60fps) vs old consoles (30fps). Or go play The last of Us Remastered on PS4(60fps) vs TLOU on ps3(30fps). You will slap yourself for not seeing the huge difference in gameplay before.
It depends on what I'm watching.
If the game/movie/etc. uses some trick that blurs the picture a bit, then I can be comfortable with lower framerate, but if the picture is sharp enough then I'd also like the framerate to stay at 60 fps.
Bingo! That's what I've been trying to say. This is a gameplay issue not a graphics issue. They are putting something as silly as graphics before gameplay. I feel bad for next gen console players, it's a smack to the face and a play on their naivety.
Let's face it, we are gamers. We love console gaming as much as PC gaming and this is not the thread to debate which one is superior. They all have their merits, but there are some console gamers that have no idea what framerate even is. All they know is that Battlefield 4 runs smoother on a PC than a console and they cant put their finger on exactly why that is.
Why does Bungie get a pass when other game companies were chastised for having framerate drops on console? I guess we all know why, the all mighty $$$. The hype is strong in this game and the marketing dollars went a long way.
greatly depends on the game. If I am doing low action gaming I can go all the way to 20 FPS. 60 FPS is what I prefer.
That said, the number of FPS is not the issue for me...the issue for me is...
WHY LOCK IT????????????????????
I havent gotten a good answer to that question...why lock it in the first place.

With Destiny they have a limit on console resources. They can't push 60FPS with full 1080p resolution on either new console. They could probably push 60FPS at 720p resolution, upscaled in hardware to 1080p, but there are apparently a lot of people who get upset about that. It's easier to sell 30FPS than 720p.

As Nevelus said. Resolution sells more than FPS.

I can see a difference in 30, 60 and 90 FPS. Past 90 FPS I can't see any improvement and the variations in FPS don't matter nearly as much. For instance, if I'm playing a game and it ranges from 80FPS to 100FPS, it's almost as if it's just a set 90FPS. If I'm playing a game and it ranges from 50FPS to 70FPS, I can see the dips, and it bothers me. The lower the average FPS is, the worse the variations take away from the experience. I would rather play a game locked in at 30FPS with no dips than play a game with an average of 60FPS and even occasional dips in FPS. Ideally the game would lock in at 60FPS minimum, but that almost never happens for me unless the graphics are really minimal.

1. Locking: So unless I am mistaken PC games typically do not lock FPS, they allow the video card to push whatever it can with all the important variables in place (like resolution etc). So if my understanding is correct there is no need for FPS locks on consoles either for the same reason why there would not be a need for console locks on PCs.
2. One reason I can think of is so that those on PC would not be given an compettitve advantage. That of course assumes what has been common knowedge (until this year) for more than a decade which is the ideal FPS for the eye is 60 fps. That common knowedge seems to be changing based on nothing more than repeating 30fps. No data studied on the subject.

From what I understand the text is yellow is false.
For more than a decade its been common knowedge that 60fps is the ideal speed for the eye with studys backing it up.
Until this year nobody felt 30fps was ok, now all of the sudden it is with no studies to back it up.
and no I am not going to provide links on how we landed on the moon anymore than links to provide people with what is already comomnly accepted

If you have perfect eyes that best you can see is 60 FPS. If you are one of the rare people who can tell your not getting 60 FPS you are not the norm. Anything higher then 60 FPS and no human eye can catch the images being flashed at their eyes. Unless your some cyborg this is just the facts.
I didnt say cant see, said cant tell the difference. Most people cant tell the difference much past 30 FPS. Our brains are something special because they fill between the blanks and things look great. We have been watching TV for many many years at 24 FPS and now for some reason people think they need 60+ to have good gaming. We dont. If you get a good steady 30 FPS you have some solid gaming there.
again.. I ask you point blank.
Where are you getting your information from
because for the past decade its been a common studied understanding is that the eye can see beyond 60fps but that 60fps is ideal for vision.
So who told you (and it appears so many others) about this business regarding the brain filling in gaps? some pod cast? an article? AM radio? what?

Just google "what fps can our eyes see" and read up, seems the comfort zone is about 30-40 FPS. There is lots of info that 60+ can cause stress on the eyes and cause pain over long durations. I have done much reading on the subject as I am a PC tech and wanted to know what tp spend money on in upgrading me personal PC and if its worth spending the cash on a rig that gives 60+ FPS. Do I need a 120 FPS rig. More you read up on the subject the more I came to the conclusion I didnt need it. If you get a steady 30-40 FPS you are rocking. If you dont think Im right thats fine but take some time and google what I said and see for yourself.
