So the thing that draws me to Archeage is the class system and the choices a player has. However as an MMO veteran I know sometimes having all those choices don't work well with each other.
With that said what are some combination that just flat out do not work?
Like for example if i decide to go Songcraft, Shadowplay and Defense will i just absolutely suck? (the idea behind the class is the Skald from DAOC :P ) or Songcraft, BattleRage and Vitalism for more of a friar type class (also from DAOC :P )
basically what combinations should i stay away from if i want to be viable?

I think the beauty of this type of MMO and diverse character development is creating a unique build that works best for you even if it's a build rarely or never used by others. So for starters, I think it's important to specify exactly what you want to do with it to avoid the wrong class for you.
You also really need to learn the mechanics of the game like how the different skills play off each other in combos before adopting some random build that people say is great for their own reasons. Everyone can tell you their favorite build that doesn't suck in their case, but you can easily suck at playing it by not understanding where and why it works for them.
So a better explanation of what you want to do will help, along with a good explanation in any replies of how and why people play the builds they recommend. For anything less specific, the link above is a great place to start.
Edit: Just wanted to add I'd recommend going to http://archeage.gamepedia.com/Classes to get an idea where to start with your 3 skillsets. For example, you mentioned Songcraft, Shadowplay and Defense which gives you the Nightbearer class showing strengths in buffing and defending as a rough idea what you're getting with that combination.
Then you can put that combination in to http://arche-base.com/builds/generator and experiment with different skills to list the possible combos it creates on the right panel. It's important to note the cooldowns and dependencies (like 'only occurs when target is snared') of these combos. Many actions also allow consecutive casts before a cooldown starts.
That should help narrow down your choices a lot for what's best based on your interests.
