Blizzard's to-be-announced massively multiplayer game, codenamed Titan, has allegedly been rebooted and delayed. According to VentureBeat, the Blizzard team of 100 reassigned 70% of the project's staff, leaving a small team to start over. Titan is tentatively planned for a 2016 release, at best.
Good move to bolster WoW or bad idea not shooting to be #1 and #2 MMO? I wonder if Blizzard will try another try as a next gen MMO or will they hold onto WoW and slowly watch the sand slip between their fingers?
The genre is probably better off.Doesnt mean Blizzard wont be making anything else though, unfortunately. They could easily make millions upon millions with their name alone.
Honestly, I think the issue was they didn't feel they could keep up with the changing MMO market. MMos are a lot different then they use to be. Even name alone wouldn't be able to garnish the huge expanding numbers wow did, mmos in the past had a much easier time gaining numbers despite issues in its release. Combine that without cry for "new stuff!" (which personally i don't think every MMO has to have drastically new things to prosper) I think they just found that it would likely not do so well.
MMos are difficult to handle, being high risk and often only fetching a moderate reward. Even the best MMos that have come on recently can't touch the success of old titles despite being superior to it in many ways. Those that do have success tend to lose numbers quite rapidly and don't usually keep up the high subscription numbers.
Blizzards best shot is likely to support wow. Sure its an aging dinosaur and can't keep up with newer MMos, but its nostalgia can keep it up in the ratings, much like Lineage 1 is shown to be doing despite being an even older game. Older MMos just can keep more of a steady player base then new ones since people have such a connection with them. Profit wise, its the best way to get the most 'bang' for your buck.
Personally I think that with the virtual reboot of WOW with Warlords and a fantastic story line (Blisteringly awesome cinematic) that they have began to realize that any development should go straight into keeping this franchise alive.
Also reading between the lines the Portal could in theory enable time and space travel and ultimately merge the two concepts of Warcraft and Starcraft together. ...Worlds of Warcraft seems highly likely. Also they can literally keep upgrading the game on the fly and make technological leaps with every expansion.
In the immortal words of 'Trigger' from 'Only Fools and Horses' ... where he said .. ..' I've had the same Broom for over ten years .... and in that time it's only had 5 new handles and 6 new heads'
So ... I think that Blizzcon may well be more exciting than we might realize. They are in the middle of making a movie too.... so I think all that development on 'Titan' may for at least the last couple of years been a bit of a red herring ...

Titan would have only cannibalized WoW bcs that is the biggest pool of Players - WoW can stil run 10 more years for a fraction of the Money of a new "AAA" MMO - and 1 of the 2 would have been a huge Flop or gotten its Deathblow.
They be wise not to compete with themself - until WoW is dead of its own.
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"
Shame really. The unofficial mantra for that game was apparently to be more casual than WoW. Had hoped Blizzard would be the one to make a true casual MMO, but now it's back to square one with no end in sight.
Well, the good thing is they have a lot of people who got time to work on other games. Maybe speed up SC2: Legacy of the Void, or make Warcraft IV?
Or, one can dream, restart Starcraft Ghost.
Or instead of a MMO, do a "regular" game with a new franchise. They are still running on only three franchises. Even without WoW they sure as hell wouldn't be dead in the water, but i wonder where exactly they would be given their slow release cycle.
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
I'm pretty sure deep down, Blizzard has just put Titan on hold for a while, with TESO, WildStar and ArcheAge not living up to the "hype". They figured "Meh, what's the rush anyway? It's not like any of those games will take down WoW." Besides, Blizzard has some fun side projects that is attracting a lot of people, like Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. Titan project is still alive, and will be released once WoW starts getting some real competition, which won't happen until the next decade.
Blizzards current games do quiet well for themselves in today's market. For a game to be successful in today's market you need the most current tech there is.
7 years is a long time and that is just to long in today's game development cycle to not have released the game. Do you know how much has changed? Do you think they are sick of rewritting the code, modiflying commands and maybe even changing the engine? I am sure it is a huge list. It is just to long.
It is a shame they shelved it, but in the end i am sure it was for the best.

That is nothing! You should hear about how much money I spent on a game I have never shown anyone and ended up scrapping.
I can provide you evidence of a name if you really want!

Kinda like Bungie with Destiny.

I think Blizz finally realised that WoW was a freak occurence and they wouldn't be able to repeat that level of success.
Better to go out on top than to fail.

time will tell....
Titan must have been really terrible and way behind competitor products.
Rest assured they wouldn't throw something away that could make them tons of money.
Conclusion for me, Titan was crap, that's all we'll ever know.
Maybe Destiny was titan??
Ok ok, I'll take the tin foil hat off:(
But it could.....nvm
first no world of darkness then no titan.

Yes thousands of people should lose their jobs because people like you dislike the video games they make.
I also dislike certain games but i would never wish for any gaming company to go out of business.
Self centered gamers like you are on the whole new level of 'crazy' and honestly give a bad name to rest of us.

I think so too.

long live the next great hyped project....
no breaking news here....
I have a life, its just different from yours.....
Err, Titan had zero hype. There was literally nothing ever released or otherwise known about it.

ARCHEAGE WAS THE TITAN KILLER!!!
Clearly isn't a coincidence that Archeage launches and then Titan gets canceled!
