On the back of a delayed patch today (during my normal play time), EA/Bioware has delayed the announcement of 3.0 information citing lack of information.
So then why release a trailer if you have no concrete ideas about what you're doing? Seems counter productive.
"By the time we announce we have to have a concrete idea of what will be coming in the game with the expansion, what types of perks we might give our subscribers, etc"
And here I thought that you had that idea when you came up with 3.0....... not "after" or "during" development. Kinda need to know what you're developing right?

The new expansion is already work in progress. However, maybe they received feedback about various stuff they where to present and based on that feedback they need to re-evaluate certain things.
Anyhow, i'm okay with delaying an expansion as long as they provide a quality product.
Note: i just read the Eric Musco stated that the expansion itself won't be delayed, just the announcement. Personally, i doubt that SWTOR 3.0 will make it this year considering the fact that October is here and a minimum of 2 months beta testing is needed. But as i wrote i have no issues with any delays.
I'm not mad about what they're doing. I'm pointing out that they sound like idiots in the context. Here's all they needed to say..
"We're not quite comfortable enough yet with current progress to make the announcement official. We released the teaser trailer because we were excited to show you a snippet of what we're thinking about employing in 3.0. Finally, there are no current delays to the release of 3.0 but as we've not set any firm dates on it, it's on schedule. "
And then he could tease with "Unlike our release stating you'd have information by the end of the month". "That's been delayed".
See what I did? You tell the truth, you don't try to hide the situation, and people get a smile. No one minds a delay so long as it pays off. It's the way he did so.
The xpac wont be delayed, This is more about Subscriber Bonus and benefits or Maybe they are still discussing if this xpac will be Free or you have to pay like we did with ROHC.
Pretty much. I'll just quote ImpactHound, who posted a developer quote from the official forums on the thread that's currently just below this one:
Stay back, I’m holding a thermal detonator! To answer your question about the expansion announcement:
Soon™! We are holding the announcement back a bit to add something really nice for subscribers, and we’ll be revealing all shortly - a couple of weeks at the latest. The delay of announcement has no effect on the expansion schedule, and we are still sticking to our commitment of launching it this year.

Wow, this site just completely violated my previous post. And it doesn't even have an edit button (nor any of the other buttons) on it to attempt to fix it.
(Either that or Chrome's playing some tricks on me!)

Az, as the person responsible for breaking this post I hold you responsible. For SOME reason.. the completion of your post is showing above the OP. I was just trying to get info out there
OMG! I didn't even see it did that until you pointed it out!
Sorry!
On the bright side... I'm now sure that it wasn't my browser acting up.

Neat, a shout-out
Anyways, with a quote like "If we are not 100% confident in what we are going to put out"
how can you also expect us to not speculate? "I would caution not to read too deep into what I said above."
If Strongholds were delayed, and this announcement of basic details is delayed, I'm not going to believe a statement that the expansion is going to be on-time. It's gonna be delayed. Or stripped of some key features to be released in 3.1 or 3.2, as others have said in the big thread on the official forums.
Meanwhile, Blizzard devs are an open book. You can hate WoW and their expansion/direction as much as you want, but they're not afraid to say what's going on with levels, new features, flying, etc. way in advance. Makeb wasn't big enough to warrant this much secrecy, and neither is Shadow of Revan; it's a real shame when someone like swtor_miner is the only one getting into to the fans. Also pathetic that BioWare blacklists fansites that host his leaks, but they provide nothing to the fansites themselves(since their community team apparently doesn't do anything but arrange the cantina bar crawls monthly).
There's a pre-order mail that's been datamined, so it's looking like it'll be paid so far, or at least they intended it to be. We could possibly see a change with all these delays.
No way!

They've said they have separate staff so there's no distractions for SWTOR staff doing Shadow Realms work, but I don't believe it. Especially for the community team. I mean, what are they really doing for 40 hours a week there?
I'm sure they have separate devs, but it's been confirmed that the community team works on both.
Hence that Shadowrealms website having a blog with Musco, Woods and the others playing and promoting Shadow Realms.

Some follow up posts from Eric Musco, hopefully I can post them without breaking Ikeda's thread even more!
Edit: Just noticed a mod fixed things! Thanks, mysterious modly benefactor!
Hey folks,
First, I want to apologize for the last minute nature of getting you the information on the delay. I know many of you are frustrated that Tait and I didn't mention anything on the stream on Friday. Simply put, the studio was doing everything possible to still announce all of the details today or tomorrow, in September. Unfortunately, as of today, we moved the timeline back and so we told you once that decision was made. I realize "a couple of weeks sounds ominous," but know that everyone is hard at work to get you this information as soon as we can (which will hopefully be sooner, rather than later).
We are all really excited to share details of our next expansion with you. I know you are all eager to hear details, any details, and we will get you all of the details as soon as we can. We just want to make sure all of the information is correct before we put it out there.
Thank you again for your patience with this.

This is a great question (or questions?), that I think are on a lot of folks minds. As you can imagine I can't go too deep into the rabbit hole in talking about our internal processes but I can give it a go.
In short, the process we go through internally to announce something as big as an expansion is actually quite complex and extensive. Although you are correct in that the end process may be a video, a landing page with some copy, etc. the process to get there requires a large amount of moving parts across multiple teams. Aside from just the assets and webpages there is arguably one of the most important aspects of these types of announcements, the game!
By the time we announce we have to have a concrete idea of what will be coming in the game with the expansion, what types of perks we might give our subscribers, etc. Unfortunately with so many moving parts, we can sometimes run into the scenario like we did today. If we are not 100% confident in what we are going to put out, for a multitude of possible reasons, it can lead to a delay of announcement.
I would caution not to read too deep into what I said above. It is somewhere in the cog of those moving parts that this delay happened, but ultimately our goal remains the same: to get you as many details about this expansion as soon as we can!

I don't mind if the expansion would be delayed a bit... I want to finish Dragon Age Inquisition before it comes out LOL.
Anyway, sure they love the suspense, got to give them that... Not sure if to love them or to not for that /grin.
Also I found this gaming gem today from another Polish developer The Astronauts " The Vanishing of Ethan Carter for just $19.99 that I am just now downloading from Steam - and it is visually stunning. It is dark horror mystery game... not too long gameplay - about 6 hours or so of solving mystery, enough to kill some time while waiting
PS. Ok I am bias as I am from Poland /grin
Trailer:

Hah, I saw that game the other day.
Kinda reminded me of "The Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn".
And now that you linked those trailers it's an even closer resemblence. The area in that first trailer could easily pass for Blue Mountain (Pre-invasion), and that house kinda looks like Eleanor's place. Just needs some cats.
I may have to look into that game sometime too.

The "unsure about subscriber perks" is the important phrase there.
It's highly likely that there has been some dispute about what they're going to give subscribers and what they're going to put in the cash shop.

damn I was really hyped for the announcment, I so hope this expansion will be cool, expectations are high.
I'm hoping for major game improvements
