I started with EQ in 2000. The last MMO with some semblance of RPG left in it was WoW pre-Cata (2009). So that is what, 10 years?

Kind of sad that a final date can be cited.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

If we count muds or bbs door games like legend of the red dragon or the exploration of space I can't say for sure.. sometime in the 80s.

The first real mmo I played was AO in 2001 and I still play my very first character :)

    Edit:

Holy shit, I just looked up teos and lord and it was made by the same Seth Robinson of the recent cash grab Star Citizen?

    That was new to me.

    Edit2: No I don't think it is :)

I don't count the MUDs I used to play (E.G. LORD in 1989) so 1998 for me with Ultima which I only played briefly before switching to EQ when that launched because some of my friends were also going to start playing it.

I am the same as this guy, however, I do disagree... even though I played them they were not MMO's. MUD's are called MUD's for a reason not an MMO.  So ya! Meridian 59, UO, blah blah blah...played em all and still playing.

Be careful .. some people here don't like others to think that Diablo 3 is a MMO. Personally i think it is close enough.

i dont count diablo 3 as a MMO either, I meant it more like, now im in diablo 3 as in the others have watered down into instance based hub games, and if thats what mmo's are these days.. well then d3 aint that different from that .

saying that i dont think i consider swtor or TSW as mmo's either, they are also hub based coop story mission based games.

the last real MMO i played was SWG and before that UO... Wow is a mmo for sure, but only because it has a semi open world, its really close to being a hub based instance coop game though... real close.

So it boils down to how the term is commonly used. And i am with u ... D3 is close enough to many of these type of games.

It's strange how you seem to have such a strong obsession with reclassifying and shuffling around genre definitions. D3 is an ARPG, why is this such a struggle. This is bordering on the lines of OCD at this point.

If you actually read fardreamer is the one who did the "reclassifying" .. and I think given your comment, i am 100% justified in warning him that some will blow a casket just because some people think D3 is close enough to a MMO.

    I guess I am right.

yes, and also, I just mentioned d3 in the same breath because the other "mmo"s not really being mmos anymore either still they have that label.... so perhaps the point got accross? ^^

Started with Lineage ][ in 2004. Migrated to CB World of Warcraft. Then OB. Been playing that off and on for the past ten years. I'll play for six months, get bored, try something. Play THAT for two months....annnnnnd go back to Warcraft. Kind of on that swing now. Stopped Warcraft about three months ago. Been playing Path of Exile in the meantime. Just looked up the patch notes for WoD. Made a PTR character and its pretty much the same game with 1/10 the skills.

I think MMOs are dead to me.

Since 2003 when EVE launched... I have to admit that when I bought it I thought it was an Elite clone and didn't realize it was online until I installed it... that game introduced me to the world of online gaming.

Personally, since summer 2004. I forget which games precisely but I know I was playing online games at that time. May not have been MMORPG exactly but MMO definitely.

It's been 9 years for me, since 2005 when I started playing Runescape. I've played almost MMO in the market and none gave me that "spark" you get whenever you join a game like Runescape and WoW did, although i do enjoy a wide list of MMOs. It's crazy how you get so involved in playing these games and don't even notice how fast time flies, at least I sure didn't notice. Hope it's another 9 more years to come playing MMOs!

That's funny. Similar experience with Lineage ][. Bought the game, installed, and started playing. Got to the first town and saw all these people running around. Remember sitting there all confused. Then it hits you, oh shit I'm online!

Since 2003 so 11 years when Final Fantasy 11 online was released for PC winter of 2003 in USA, and bought it spring 2004 on ps2 as well, and later on xbox360.

Started with MUDs on BBCs many years ago when the option to go online started from those dial up bulletin boards but even before that one board could compete against another.

Asheron's Call around 2000. It has been some time so not sure when exactly.  Then a friend and I went to DAoC, first beta then back to AC and then "full time" PvP server in DAoC,  After that it was game hopping because most of the games went down pretty fast. Ofc my journey included a short lvl 70 visit to WoW. Still looking for a new home and trying everything there is to the fullist but most games end 3-4 months after starting to play them. I end up with the same things I have done for more than a decade without something special.

Im an old gamer but not that old MMO gamer. Started my experience with mmos in 2008 with Wow.

My experience with online gaming started a bit earlier than that with muds and later on Warcraft battle net edition and Starcraft 1 online pvp. That was fun times image Weekends with friends in lanparties, doom, quake, unreal, wow2/3, starcraft 1. Back in the good ol days when games was only for fun with friends and some beers.

Now its all about "first, fastest, richest" most of that or best gear of that. And all the drama nowadays, rage quitting and bad attitudes. Maybe Im getting old.

Honestly, I contribute this to my lack of enthusiasm towards gaming. Ten years ago I was living at home, no girlfriend, part time job, meandering through college. Now I have a wife, house, career, two cars, horses, 107 acres, tractors, 4x4s, dogs, and our aging parents. I simply don't have the energy to set aside six consecutive hours to raid anymore. I need the ability to just get up at a moment's notice without ~20 other people bickering over the mic.

Yeh .. if the point is that the label "MMO" has changed and is now different from when the term is first used .... yes  ... i think your point is made.
